Thats why I did some number crunching when I swapped from the OEM 16s to the RT 17s on my Dakota. Wanted a change but not alot to upset the Apple Cart. 16x8 was 28lb and 245/70-16 (29.5") Wranglers weighed 32lbs (60lb total) vs 17x9 at 32lb, and the 255/50-17 (27") Hankooks at 32lbs (64 total) 9.6 to a 10.0 wide tire... measured IRL with a tape measure, 28.5 to a 27, the Hankooks ran to size, Goodyears were 1" smaller than they should have been in diameter but it was lowered 2" in the front and 3.5" rear at the same time as the wheel/tire swap. I still had roughly a 1 degree of rake vs the 3.5 it had before at stock height. To compare: The Dakota RTs came 255/55 17 stock on those 32lb wheels and the tires you can get weigh 32lbs too, but a 5.9L 4spd auto and 3.92 gear vs mine with the 4.7L 5spd auto and 3.55s. I was getting an average of 13.5mpg (80% city driving) before, so far the three tanks Ive ran through it, roughly seeing between 13.2 to 14.1mpg now same driving style/pattern. Tons of variables, I'm not going to drive it like a sedated nun like they do for MPG testing. Traffic changes, city vs highway driving %, fuel quality, weather... tons of variables.

Thanks Mike! It actually has the same aerodynamic efficiency as a Honda Accord believe it or not! There are articles on it you can check out 😎
@z7117z3 жыл бұрын
@@BoostedMotorsports I don't know what kind of articles those would be. 'Trucks' (I don't call them trucks) have terrible aerodynamics. They are an aerodynamic nightmare. They are too high (air drag under the vehicle) too big (more frontal area) and the box on the back does a disgusting job of bringing the air flow back together (very important- think of a raindrop a shape formed by air). I looked up the cd (coefficient of drag) of a RAM - .360! That is not good. Honda Accord .29 or .30. Cd is not the entire story, you must multiply cd by frontal area to get your entire drag. The frontal area of a 'truck' (trucks have 18 wheels) is going to be twice the Accord's frontal area! I would quit reading those articles written by crack addicts and start studying some car material. 27 mpg. Hahaha. Hemis are not known for their fuel mileage. I know someone who had one, I beat him easily with a way old GM half ton. Maybe on an LA freeway where the top speed is 35? Still doubt it. Interstate here is 80 mph, the 'trucks' drive 90, and I don't think any of them are getting 27 mpg. Haha. I don't mean to be rude, but this is some rubbish you're speaking. You shouldn't mislead people on aerodynamics and mileage to this extent.

Larger tires on my F-350 dually increased my in town mileage from 14.9 to 16.1, highway 15.7 to 17.6
@peterkoska6876 Жыл бұрын
All of those things are factors. I'm just shocked by the MPG loses for aftermarket, as I put 35"x12.50R17E's on my '17 6.2 gas, with -12 offset, so the edge of the tires was slightly set outside of the wheel well. I also had it loaded down with tools, a work insert with ladder rack, as well as aftermarket, much heavier bumpers, side steps etc, (I don't remember what it's empty curb weight was but as described, it was 9700-9800 lbs.) & my best stock MPG empty via the computer was 13.8. Altered & not calculating in the odometer/speed being off my best was about 10.8. Both are pathetic but those are a whole lot of factors on a heavy work truck & I, if you factor in the miscalibrations, lost less than 3 MPG. Various people are claiming 7+ to 10 mpg drop going to aftermarket, one example, an essentially empty & what appears to be an unaltered in any other way 1/2 ton.

You know. I agree and am getting pissed at the way even stock wheels are getting bigger and bigger. Remember back in the nineties and even eighties anything that got milage, and I’m talking 35-45 mpg, had small wheels. Agree. Bigger wheels are heavier AND take more hp to keep moving. Its all aesthetics. People done realize how we’re getting ripped off on fuel milage with these huge tires. Also. The super huge width is only any good on perfect dry pavement. Narrow tires equals more psi to the ground equals better traction and control.

I agree. Another factor is as well the tire rubber compound. Some tires even though they are the same size and very similar style will have lower or higher fuel consumption and that is caused by the flexibility of the rubber compound. Of course incorrect tire pressure is a huge factor as well.

I have a question I can't find the answer to. I have 24's on my truck (lifted 3 inches). The overall diameter from one edge of the tire, to the opposite side, is 30 inches (24" plus 3 inches of low profile tire). If I change the wheel size to 18, go from 305 width to say, 260, but keep the overall tire diameter at 30 inches since the new tires will not be low profile, will that improve gas mileage greatly? In both scenarios I'm working with an overall diameter of 30 inches, but the new tires would be 6 inches smaller, and thinner. No, the offset wouldn't be leaving the body creating wind drag in either scenario. They're tucked in like yours Thanks PS: One factor you left out that reduces mileage: A truck's tailgate being shut. Massive wind drag. I need to get a truck bed cover, or drive with the tailgate down.

From personal experience all I know is the width of the tires don't make a difference, only if they are sommar or winter tires and if the tires are balanced or not. My winter tires usually have much lower mph while sommar tires don't and when I switch to bigger diameter tires, it also decreased mpg. I really don't believe it is because of the weight. All of it comes down to aerodynamics too. One time I hauled a big closed trailer and it was empty on the way it was full of stuff and it got the exavt same mileage maybe a 1 or 2 mpgs lower.

Probably the biggest factor is the simple direct change in the gearing of the drivewheel. Going to a larger wheel reduces power to the drive train, with a corresponding reduction in fuel economy. It's that simple. Think riding a bicycle with multiple gears on the front sprocket. Which one is easiest to pedal? Which do you not want to try to start out uphill in, for example. So wheel size is critical. The other factors are just multipliers. Not to mention, for you all big wheel nuts, ANY imperfection in the wheel, or any of them, and/or the tires acts as a multiplier as well. The bigger they are the more the problems are augmented and brought to the forefront of your drivability.

But I say! My horrible stealership tires rode nice but if you put a match box in the bed they were smashed down. Let alone hooking on my travel trailer. It was my fault that I let the stealership sell me a truck with passenger car tires on it. Trucks need LT rated tires on them at minimum. Unless you are going to use it as a car.

Your brakes work better, your car handles better, your rear wheel horsepower and torque goes up if you put smaller than stock tires on any vehicle.

Sooo... Basically you’re saying that everything cool you can do in relation to wheels and tires is going to completely jack up your mpg. I wonder my mileage sucks so bad.
