THIS VIDEO IS A RECONSTRUCTION OF THE FOLLOWING SITUATION IN FLIGHT:
30-DEC-2023. An American Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8 (B38M), registration N338ST, performing flight AAL1327 / AA1327 from New York John F. Kennedy International Airport, NY (USA) to Cancun International Airport (Mexico) was cleared for take-off and started the acceleration when the aircraft on the ground informed controller that there was a fuel coming out of the right wing side of American 1327. The controller informed AAL1327 and they stopped climb at 3000 feet, declared an emergency and returned to JFK. Based on the communications a fuel was found around taxiway J. This aircraft (N338ST) remained on the ground for about 24 hours after the return.

THE VALUE OF THIS VIDEO:
THE MAIN VALUE IS EDUCATION. This reconstruction will be useful for actual or future air traffic controllers and pilots, people who plan to connect life with aviation, who like aviation. With help of this video reconstruction you’ll learn how to use radiotelephony rules, Aviation English language and general English language (for people whose native language is not English) in situation in flight, which was shown. THE MAIN REASON I DO THIS IS TO HELP PEOPLE TO UNDERSTAND EVERY EMERGENCY SITUATION, EVERY WORD AND EVERY MOVE OF AIRCRAFT.
SOURCES OF MATERIAL, LICENSES AND PERMISSIONS:
Source of communications - www.liveatc.net/ (I have a permission (Letter) for commercial use of radio communications from LiveATC.net).
Map, aerial pictures (License (ODbL) ©OpenStreetMap -www.openstreetmap.org/copyrig...) Permission for commercial use, royalty-free use.
Radar screen (In new versions of videos) - Made by author.
Text version of communication - Made by Author.
Video editing - Made by author.
HOW I DO VIDEOS:
1) I monitor media, airspace, looking for any non-standard, emergency and interesting situation.
2) I find communications of ATC unit for the period of time I need.
3) I take only phrases between air traffic controller and selected flight.
4) I find a flight path of selected aircraft.
5) I make an animation (early couple of videos don’t have animation) of flight path and aircraft, where the aircraft goes on his route.
6) When I edit video I put phrases of communications to specific points in video (in tandem with animation).
7) Together with my comments (voice and text) I edit and make a reconstruction of emergency, non-standard and interesting situation in flight.

Could have been the surge tank vent if they had no imbalance showing. I've had that happen a few times.

I have heard of that happening before but this time the pilot behind him is the one who called it in. I think he would know the difference.

@@susanwahl6322 The last time I had a surge tank vent leak, the A/C behind us on taxi out called ground. As far as I know, the crew in this video did not shut down an engine, which is where the fuel imbalance/Fuel leak checklist eventually takes you if you have a verified leak. The crew behind them wouldn't NOT report an observed leak, even if they thought it was "only" a surge tank. There's really no way to know for sure from their vantage point.

please check xfeed valve switch captain. If the high speed xfeed valve is open it only feeds from one tank. This gives the impression that there is a fuel leak.

I wonder why two different pilots on american talked on the radio. The second one sounded nervous and then the other one had to take over again

Does anyone know how long it would take the pilot to know if there is a fuel leak ? Not a pilot so it’s a serious question . Thanks

Pilots usually report fuel quantity AGAINST what is estimated on the flight plan at TOP OF CLIMB ALTITUDE. After that at each checkpoint location on the AIRWAY. [ about 40 minutes flight time ] the flight plan fuel is compared against the fuel tank fuel. You also have [ fuel used per hour gages ], The computer on modern aircraft will show landing fuel [ landing at planned destination Airport ] at ALL TIMES, if the flight continues as planned. This information is what pilots put into the flight computer while the aircraft is being boarded.

Generally a message will come saying there is a fuel imbalance (at around 2 tons difference on the 787) the checklist leads you to determining if it’s from a fuel leak

@@tonystewart7287 I agree with all said, leaks can be small and hard to detect except by time and diversion. It's the reason why checkpoints / and quantity are the most accurate way to detect leaks, also when a leak started.
