Thanks for posting this video. U.S. Newer Cars no longer have the external Fuel Filter because the Gasoline is supposed to be cleaner. Most newer Cars have just the Strainer/ Sock attached to the Fuel Pump. After watching this video, I'm going to re- engineer my vehicles to pre- filter all Gasoline before it reaches the Fuel Tank(s). I'm a Mechanical Engineering Consultant.

I came here to see how to clean the fuel pump sending unit strainer, since can't find exactly same. I'm replacing the fuel pump motor and a new motor has a strainer, but for the motor itself, not for the Sending Unit . What you describe is exactly what was happening to my 2001 Saturn SL2 (maybe not so intense, but still). I have a code P0446 though. Also changed many parts before decided to drop a tank. That information was very useful, good to know, thanks a lot.

Awesome. I'm working on a 67 Pontiac GTO and the sock is the last thing I can think of. Luckily they are readily available in my area. I'll be taking dropping the tank this weekend, I know the inside has a ton of rust.

exactly the same thing happened to my Hyundai Elantra when i fill it with a very dirty fuel here in Egypt but for sorrow the blocked strainer killed the fuel pump because of overheated so i had to replace it with new filter.

Boiling the pre-filter? Never would have thought of that.

Just found this video . I did everything you did to mine too. Until I finally dropped my tank pulled the pump out and sure enough black sock. The mechanic stuck an extra clean one inside my tank when I replaced my pump replaced it and bingo all acceleration came back.

is it a plastic strainer or paper that's made of similar material as the fuel filter?

Hey there mate, can this cause a EML to come on?
@bcbliss53 жыл бұрын
On my vehicle it did not create an EML. My research seems to confirm that this is a problem that many car makers have not created a fault code or other indicator. Hence why it took me so long to sort through potential causes of the power loss. I'm still running on the cleaned filter sock. I have finally gotten a new sock, just need a free afternoon to put it on.

Thank you adding your video resource. There are not many videos that explain this problem or give the solution.

although your intention was good, I really dislike when people exaggerate. you showed the parts fiche for the whole pump assembly, but you only cleaned the filter and that part can be bought for $20.16 part number #23217D. first thing on parts fiche list. I cant stand videos that really inflate things instead of being genuine. cheap asz, go buy a new fuel filter sock. $20 is peanuts. a good inline fuel filter will cost far more.

Dear friend, Thank you for helping me and others find the part number for the fuel pump strainer / sock. There are very few videos, or mechanics that will point a person to this diagnosis. After much research, troubleshooting and many different repair attempts, I found myself stranded in the bush, and took a risk to put my research to the test, and went into my fuel tank and found the problem. I genuinely hope my experience will save others from wasted time and money. (Please see the video description - posted again below.) I am very sorry if you felt that I was somehow exaggerating the information I gave. This situation happened in a part of the world where there is not simple, easy, or cheap access to engine / vehicle parts. This was a “bush repair” that was worth sharing with others. This video was made three years ago. Since then, I have traveled to another country and found and HAVE purchased a new fuel pump strainer / sock. It sits in my shop, waiting for my vehicle to have the need or for me to have the time and energy to go into my tank and replace the sock that I cleaned…as that “bush repair” is still working great three years later. Have a great day! Video Description In this video I show how I cleaned the fuel pump pre-filter (also called a screen, strainer or sock) and solved a significant engine problem of power loss at high torque or RPMs on my 2007 Toyota Prado. Dirty fuel, over the years, can create a sludge build up on the fuel pump pre-filter. With a dirty pre-filter, the pump cannot suck in a sufficient amount of fuel for high torque demand such as hill climbing or passing. Almost all the information I found (forums and videos) only suggested “replacement” of the fuel pump. Very few suggest the possibility of cleaning the pump pre-filter. In my case, due to non-availability of parts, replacement was not an option. Thanks to other helpful KZbin and forum contributions. With their help, I made this video to tell how I solved a significant engine problem related to the fuel pump. Here are the links to their resources…..
