This is one of the best videos I've seen so far on demonstrating the work involved in doing this repair to the 3rd gen. What makes it look easy in this video is that the differential has been removed beforehand. Getting the differential out of the way is a large portion of the work involved. If the differential is still installed on the car, removing that section of exhaust pipe can be challenging. What I've done is to disconnect the rear passenger side shock, remove the rear passenger side wheel, remove the spring, disconnect the rear passenger side lower control arm at the differential, disconnect the emergency brake cable at the caliper and then lift the exhaust pipe up and over the rotor and caliper assembly, and then pull the exhaust out that way. I've done this repair on my 3rd gen roughly 6 - 8 times over the past 30 years. I can do it from start to finish in just about 3 hours. Very challenging job for sure. From recollection I think GM lists this job at a ridiculous 1 hour and 45 minutes job, or something like that. I refuse to cut a hole in the car just to follow the path of least resistance.

@@natividadaguayo3318 All the times the fuel pump in my 87' GTA went out, it went out completely and the car did not start at all. Sounds like the fuel pump in your car is not running well or you have a clog somewhere, most probable is a bad/clogged fuel filter. When was the last time you changed the fuel filter? If you don't already know it's located under the car on the driver side right below the driver rear passenger seat. Symptom of a bad/clogged fuel filter is the car will want to die when letting off the gas when coming to a stop sign or stop light.

Excellent video. I dropped the tank once on my '88 firebird a few years ago but then also installed an access panel right over the fuel pump. @@mudbug535 A trap door adds cost. That is why it was not done on many older cars. 2 cars non American cars came with factory fuel pump in tank access doors. My Chevy and Ford vehicles do not. Lets say the door and gasket and its screws and labor only costs 50 cents. That cost is 500k dollars for a million cars. So like 4 to 5 design engineers salary for a year.

Great video!! Say just a heads up if you have to replace the gas tank which I had to do on my 92 Z28 the aftermarket tanks don't fit very well because of the angle of the filler neck . I'm sure a lot you know that but just thought I would bring it up. I did notice when I dropped my gas tank that someone down the road did cut the sheet metal I guess to make a door for the fuel pump but for some reason they changed there mind and welded it back in. So please 3rd Gen Guy don't come after me I didn't do it LOL.

In the process today, most importantly - get as much gas out of it as you can. Gasoline weighs about 6 pounds per gallon so the more that's in the the tank, the more difficult it will be to get the fill spout out of the side of the car. Otherwise, pressure wash entire back end underneath, use engine cleaner on it.

I used to feel that way. I even once modded the lines with flared fittings. In the end I decide to run an inline pump. I think mine was branded Hypertech. Yeah... If I have to change a pump again, it will require a nut driver, and a jack. Runs very well. If I ever go back to an intank pump it will be a modern plastic configuration; to fight any cornering starvation, only. Great video though! Having quite a few years to reflect on the idea of an access hole.. It makes no difference in the car stucturally. There must be changes made to the lines to make it worthwhile; making a disconnect close to the unit. I said 'unit'.

I do have a question: I made the mistake of taking mine to a shop and they completely screwed up the repair. I've spent the past year or so fixing their screw ups (it goes well beyond the tank) and have found a gas leak by my fuel neck. I bought a neckless tank and a fuel neck. They lost my fuel neck but replaced it "free of charge". It's leaking at the fuel neck. Could I use the epoxy to fix this oversight?

In the middle of attempting this, decided to watch a vid to see the correct way, first step remove the rear suspension, immediately thought yep that's why it ain't coming out, they never thought the car would outlast the pump when they designed this. Also this Camaro is straight pipe all the way from the manifold so yeah. Also I double, triple, and quadruple checked that the fuel pump was not running, after hearing this prime in the video, I know for sure that the pump was getting power and was not running.

Hey, I've had a problem with my fuel tank becoming extremely pressurized after the fuel inside warms up from the exhaust. There is so much pressure in my tank that when I open the gas cap to fill up, there is an explosive rush of vapors that literally spray out liquid fuel as it is venting. In addition, my car always smells like gas from the engine compartment around the canister, and the charcoal canister system doesn't seem to be working right and appears to be getting liquid fuel into it. What could it be? For the tank pressure: I have the heat shield in place above the muffler and I have replaced the vent on the hose at the gas tank. At the cannister: I have replaced the cannister twice as well as solenoids, hoses, and valves near it. I'm wondering if the hose that the vent attaches to is somehow clogged inside the tank not allowing it to vent. I'm also wondering if somehow someone crossed lines before I acquired the car which is causing unused liquid fuel to be going to the cannister rather than back to the tank. I own the official factory shop manual and the CD version, but this still bewilders me. If you happen to know of a resource that does well explaining the fuel and vapor system on this car it would be tremendously appreciated. It is for a 92 5.7L Z28. Our neighbor used to have a 92 RS as well, and when I brought this up to my dad, he mentioned our neighbor also had the same problem and after multiple trips to the dealer, they could never fix it and he eventually traded it in.

the axle was already removed for repairs as stated early in the video. you do not have to remove the axle to replace the pump. just dropping the axle is enough

Couple of things: First, given the unreliability of fuel pumps for these cars, making a proper access port is both logical and superior in every way to dismantling your entire rear suspension. Second, what kind of tape did you use, that yellow golden stuff on the weather pack section? Third, good luck finding me, because she's getting a trap door, I only want to drop this tank one damn time and put in the suspension once. If my pump goes, I have no interest in dealing with all that nonsense.

If you purchase a quality fuel pump, you should not have to do this more than once. Hurting the structural rigidity of a unibody car and potentially installing an unsafe access port is not something many people are willing to do. Very KZbinrs are in-depth about proper maintenance procedures with these cars, with 3rd Gen Guy being one of the most resourceful I've seen yet. You can cut up and ruin your car all you want, ultimately it is your car, but I and a lot of people prefer not to ruin our stuff, put ourselves and passengers in unnecessary danger, and treat things with care.

@@skulltrail5757 you do realize GM has made dozens of Unibody cars with built in Fuel Pump Access right? Get off your high horse kid. And if done well, this removes very little sheet metal and can be built so that it is quite strong indeed. But sure, go ahead and tell me more about your engineering degree kid 😂

@@ariyanadumon4549 This will be my final word with you about this issue because I obviously will not be able to convince you. You are right, I do not have an engineering degree, but I trust that you do not have an engineering degree either, most people do not...So moot point on your end I guess? I operate on specific guidelines given to me by people who know more about this stuff than I do. Most amateurs do that. Following that logic, most amateurs are not interested in cutting a fuel access door if it means that them messing it up(which is more likely than not with inexperienced people) and getting fumes in their cars can mean brain damage or permanent structural damage. More experienced people may be more comfortable doing this. I do know that fuel pump access doors have been made that, with the proper skills, can be made very structurally stable(obviously!) and I am not trying to debate that. But they can much easier be made horribly. I do not understand why you are watching this video. Allow people to make their own decisions on this issue and leave everyone else alone. You are projecting really hard and justifying your own behavior by flaming a video that made a quip about people who create very poorly made access doors(that very obviously rustled you the wrong way). Attacking videos and people who will not reassure you on a decision you have already made and advising people to do something recklessly is not constructive.
