i agree…. never go in that easy, been fighting for two hours trying to get the 2nd mount bolt in!!!

If you're still checking these, do you need to run the tank down before changing? Or is that not going to be a big issue when changing the pump? I think I got debris in mine, too. Having similar issue as what you described.

No don’t need to run tank down. You will need something to catch fuel and if possible push lines upward to stop them from draining more fuel.

I have a1979 Ford f100 4.9liter that just quit on me on the road, during that time I could smell a burning smell . Got it home . I removed the hose to the pump and no fuel. So I replaced with new pump. Engine will turn but no crank. Where could my problem be ?

With fuel line off between carb and pump is it pumping fuel . And do you have spark

@@btwgarage5265 with line off, no fuel I can here the new pump pumping, and spark? How do I check for spark? Can that have something to do with it no fuel coming up?

If pump is installed correctly and you have gas in tank make Urey out don’t have a plugged fuel filter between tank and pump. The old rod trucks used to have a in tank filter that would cause a lot o headache. And I assume you primed carb with fuel to fuel up from tank when turning over. And to test for soak you can either buy a cheap inline spark tester and have someone crank engine well you watch tester for spark. If don’t have tester pull number one park plug wire off stick plug in end of wire and have someone crank motor again if spark then put plug and wires back

Pump replacement should be the same you will just have fuel line going back to fuel tank switch over valve

I've ran into a lot of trouble,... with the replacement pump's (Carter... china one's),... had 3 of them on.. in 6 months,... new front and rear tanks.. sending units.. lines,.... everything,... theres gotta be a better mechanical pump out there........

Carry an extra pump under the seat (and tool's),... just changed another out last friday,... on the road,... that make's 4,... there's no pre-load on the new style arm,... I'm guessin' that's it... the rubber inlet hose (on to the pump) will loose it's prime,... and vibrate........

You forgot to show how to get the pump lever positioned correctly on the cam. I have only ever did a 360 and a Chevy 307 back in the early 90s so looking for help.Your motor sounds bad ???????????? If I had noticed the Eastman sticker I would have passed this up. I will give you a thumps up anyway and find out how to position the lever.

Lever just goes underneath cam. When you go to slide it in if it’s fighting it you pull it back out. And turn engine over by hand tell you rotate to low part of cam lobe. This will make it easier to start the pump bolts because you won’t be trying to compress lever to line up. Sorry wasn’t more helpful

They do on 360 and 390 engines. 351m and 400 engines are a pain to get that bolt. Requires beer and swearing.

@@harmanlesliagreed!! I’m trying to get my late uncles 1980 going, but isn’t there a sending unit in tank for tgat model?? I’m getting no gas to the pump from the 1 tank , and yes tank is ( unfortunately) damn near full 😅. My cousin wants it running so bad, she’s just wanting to drive it a few more times in honor of her dad… he was a helluva a mechanic

@@gillisBR549 The sending unit just gives gas gauge it's info. The pump is mounted on engine block, totally mechanical works without the sending unit even functional. You can look for old rubber hose lines though, they sometimes rot or collapse which causes fuel starvation. Also metal lines can be checked with compressed air for blockage. There is a sock filter in the tank that could also be stopping fuel if dirty. If you decide to run electric pump be safe, ground it and run a relay.

@@harmanlesli , yes you are correct on sending unit( thinking and typing 💬🤓) , I bet it’s that thing in the tank, but I’m gonna take my portable air compressor/tank as well, check those lines!,… thanks so much for the advice!!
