Fuel Tankering Explained, Aeroplane Fuel Operations, - [Do planes refuel after every flight?]

Fuel Tankering is an operation in which you load more fuel than the minimum required for the flight.
Why do you need to do the fuel tankering?
Loading more fuel than required you will reduce or cancel the refueling at the destinations Airport.
Let's imagine, that, at your departure Airfield the fuel is a lot cheaper compared to the fuel at your Destination Airport.
Your goal, in this case, is to load more fuel where is cheap and load less fuel where is expensive, in this way the Airline will reduce the Fuel costs.
The Fuel Tankering operation is widely used, around 15% of the flights perform full fuel tankering.
This means, 15% of the flight will depart with enough fuel to go to the destination and came back.
Since the fuel costs count for as high as 25% of the Operational Costs of an Airline the fuel tankering is very important for the companies.
The downside of this type of fuel operation is that, if you load more fuel than required you will be heavier thus you will burn more trip fuel for that specific sector.
Increasing the Trip Fuel will increase the CO2 emissions.
When using the fuel tankering operations you need to pay attention to the following limitation:
- Landing Weight, since you will land with a lot more fuel than normal you need to make sure that your Maximum Landing Weight is not exceeded.
- Wing Icing, the fuel in the tank, in contact with the top of the wing, will reduce the Wing skin temperature creating a perfect condition for ice creation. This is the reason why during the winter months the tankering is normally reduced in order to reduce the amount of fuel touching the wing.
The Airline will indicate to the Pilots when is preferable to perform Fuel Tankering using a field in the LIDO flight Plan.
