LYRICS
Hold my hand
Through all the bad things, you seem
A little better since you now believe
I won’t ever drop you like you are old news
Clear the air
What has been going on?
Yeah for a while you’ve been feeling wrong
Just hoping that life would feel like it used to
Chase down that crown
You don’t deserve to feel so down
I guarantee
I’m there for ya, there for ya
I’ll always be right here
When everything’s unclear
Please promise you won’t let go
Hold on til the morning
Forget all the scoring
Your flowers will finally grow
And I needed you to know
Spent your days
Glued to your telephone
And hoped that maybe you’d feel less alone
And find yourself through a post again
but it’s
All the same
Except that you’re not alone
Because in me you’ll always have a home
I’ll drop it all and come running,
Just say when
Chase down that crown
You don’t deserve to feel so down
I know you’ll see I
Will always be right here
When everything’s unclear
Please promise you won’t let go
Hold on til the morning
Forget all the scoring
Your flowers will finally grow
And I needed you to know
I’ll never forget
When you came to my doorstep
With tears on your shirt
Yeah I swear I’ll do
Anything for you cause it
Hurts to see you hurt
I’ll always be right here
When everything’s unclear
Please promise you won’t let go
Hold on til the morning
Forget all the scoring
Your flowers will finally grow
I’ll always be right here
When everything’s unclear
Please promise you won’t let go
Hold on til the morning
Forget all the scoring
Your garden will finally grow
And I needed you to know

Same here. I can take one look and be like, “Oh, cool, diversity!” and then I hear it and realize that it’s something I’d listen to regardless. It even makes me feel a bit guilty for finding it notable that they just happen to be really damn good, but it’s true that we don’t see a lot of black women (or black people or women) in rock. I think with all-female bands, too, they sometimes sound more effeminate by design, such as how Shonen Knife sounds like classic punk and alternative but lighter, cuter, and poppier. (No offense to them; that’s a valid sound.) “Garden” is a pretty sugary song but no more than a lot of pop punk, and the riffs and drum patterns have an ass-kicking metallic quality to them. Thus, it stands out, even though it shouldn’t because women should be able to rock just as hard as men.

@@meowtherainbowx4163 Like you said, it was by design, so it's relevant to question, who's design? Lots of female artists, even feminine ones, were pressured by their producers to perform hyperfemininity. It's very visible in pop music, but it was also the case in all other music genres. Some have spoken about it and this image was placed on them by poeple who didn't care if it matched their creative vision. I use the past tense because it's starting to change, but it's not like it's over.

@@brrt1683 While I do agree that there have been many in the past, I am just so happy that this band has the platform to spread their message to so many more. Anyway, we really shouldn't have to look so far for this kind of representation. I remember when I found Straight Line Stitch a long time ago, I wondered why there weren't as many in the category in general where Women of Color played such a crucial role in the upbringing of the rock genre.

Fr can't stop crying rn out of pure happiness. I discovered MM@TA at the end of last year, I knew they were gonna grow like this. Their music is fucking incredible, and the representation that they're serving is so amazing, I'm just so fucking happy for all the kids who will have them to look up to, and inspire them! Representation matters so damn much, I could not be more grateful for Ada, Edith, and Téa. So many happy tears haha 😂🥺❤
