@briangreenway asked me to show what it's like to fuel the truck and how much it costs. You Asked, I Delivered.
I ended up getting 7.9 mpg on this tank. Find out why it was so low.

Love your channel. Learning a lot. Are you weight limited on fuel. In airplanes we can almost never take on full fuel due to gross weight limits and sometimes weight distribution limits. Do those affect trucks too?
@JJtheTrucker
@JJtheTrucker 4 жыл бұрын
Yes but rarely. Here's how it works. Some loads like potatoes and beer, they want to load you to the max. They have you scale on the way in and then they fill up the trailer until your gross wt is 79,990. If you don't fuel up before getting there, you could be in that situation. Some places will let you tell them that you still need 1200 lbs of fuel for example, so they'll fill you to 78,790 lbs instead. But they really want you to fuel up first. I did have 1 load where my gross wt after loading was 600 lbs over. We had a ways to the next weigh station so we burned the fuel off before we were weighed again. It all worked out.
@romeo162006
@romeo162006 4 жыл бұрын
Weight limit on trucks is per axle and gross weight. There is a small consideration for center of gravity which is why tanks are slightly forward low and midway between the axles to apply what weight fuel adds proportionately to the vehicle. Most trucks have a sliding 5th wheel to position the load above the rear axles to keep from placing to much weight on one spot primarily for bridge engineering requirements which is what baselines law for DOT regulations and minimum interstate bridge spans must meet. Sorry bit to in depth I guess. Where you are worried about stressing the air frame we are set up to distribute the load so we don't wear out the road before regular wear is predicted to fatigue a bridge out. Your overloaded scenario is the wings get ripped off on rotation during take off or by turbulence during flight. Our consideration is we don't press our tires through pavement on hot days or break bridge sections by having to many pounds per foot in the span of a bridge.

@JJtheTrucker

Yes, definitely. As for how much, that depends on the size of the reefer fuel tank. Most are around 20 gallons, or about 1/5 of a normal 100 gallon tank. So a out 1/5 of a bottle should do. But since it's OK to have more, I usually would use about 1/4 to 1/3 of a bottle. You do NOT want that reefer to stop running.

Really? Interesting. Its a safety feature that activates the pump. That way, it won't despense fuel while the pump is in the cradle. The latch is good though because it lets you shut off both pumps when you've reached the amount of fuel you want (if you're short fueling)

Yeah, bad habit calling it gas... Been calling it that for 46 years prior to driving and using diesel. Hard habit to break. And as a lease/op with Prime I don't get a fuel bonus (although they are pretty good). I do get a fuel supplement that I speak about in my other videos, and yeah, driving 65 (isn't that slow) does save a lot of fuel. I average 8.5 mpg, plus I can drive longer between fill ups. Seems like you thought I was a company driver that drove 58. May wanna watch some of my other vids before assuming anything else 😁😁😁

If refer fuel just diesel and is not taxed, following this fueling sequence, why not just fill refer first then DEF, then actual tanks? Or is this proposed sequence illegal?

2 reasons... 1,yes it's very illegal to put untaxed fuel into the tractor and 2, you'd have to pull forward to get to the Reefer, then back up to reach the def and tractor tanks. By then, someone is behind you.

I’ve often heard that farm equipment fuel is different colors to make it harder to use in a private vehicle. I also see a lot of pickup trucks on the road with a big metal tank in the back with some sort of pump? Can they be stopped and inspected for use of tax free colored fuel in vehicle engine or is this not common?

At Prime, it depends on if you are a company driver or owner /lease. If company, then Prime pays for all fuel. If owner/lease, then Prime gives you a supplement to help out. Makes it so you're paying a lot less. Just over half. And their fuel network (in addition to being huge) has very deep discounts. Usually over a dollar off the posted price.

I could do it that way if it's outside of the Prime Fuel Network, but I'd have to call in to get a PO for it. And while the points are nice, I only get the deep fuel discounts if I use the ComData card. The discounts are WAY more than the points. Believe me, I've thought about it lol.

As an OO/LO or even a CD, when should you fuel and when should you not?
@JJtheTrucker
@JJtheTrucker 4 жыл бұрын
1). When you're at 1/4 of a tank or 2). When you find fuel that's really cheap! As a Prime CD, you fuel when their algorithm tells you to. It's usually pretty spot on, so I almost always use it as well.
@CenobiteBeldar
@CenobiteBeldar 4 жыл бұрын
JJ the Trucker well let me rephrase my question: when should you fuel when near the customer to load and unload. It’s obvious to fill up when you’re like in the middle of the US on a coast to coast load. I was LO for colonial freight and there were times when I had to know when to fill up and not run out and when not to fill up to eat.
@JJtheTrucker
@JJtheTrucker 4 жыл бұрын
At Prime, you don't pay for the fuel out of your pocket, it comes out of your settlement. And it's tied to the load your on so if you fuel up on Wednesday but that load doesn't deliver until Friday, the cost of the fuel won't come out of this Friday's check, it'll come out the same check that you get paid for the load. So you don't have to worry about whether to fuel or eat.

Why do companies govern their trucks at 65 when most highways are minimum 70-75?
@JJtheTrucker
@JJtheTrucker 4 жыл бұрын
That's a good question. Of course safety and fuel milage are the main reasons but with how the truck manufacturers do the gear ratios you'd think they could get fuel mileage to be good at 70. That just leaves safety, and there are studies out there showing that slower is safer (to an extent). I do wish it was set to 70 though. At least I'm not a company driver. Those guys are governed at 58! I'm at 65.

Welcome. To be honest, I don't know how that works but there are a lot of international drivers, so I know it's possible. Best thing is to contact a recruiter and they'll go over everything with you. Visit driveforprime.com/?r=PAUJAJ and fill out the form. A recruiter will call you back pretty quickly. Tell them JJ Paulson (Driver Code PAUJAJ) sent you. Once thats worked out, you can go through the free training course, get your CDL, then go through paid company training. That's it. The new trucks nowadays are mostly automatics, so shifting isnt an issue, and they're pretty easy to drive.

Do you prefer automatic or the old school gear shifting? How many speed transmission does this volvo have? Aside from driver comfort, are the automatics really better in terms of efficiency? Maintenance?
@JJtheTrucker

Since it's a federal offense for Truckers and we can lose our license (which means no job), that thought quickly perishes. Just not worth it. The tax really isn't that much.
@JJtheTrucker
@JJtheTrucker 4 жыл бұрын
Good questions on the automated transmissions. I learned cars on a 5 speed and loved manuals for years. When I got my first auto, I hated it. After a few of them and then going back to stick, I didn't like the stick as much. Especially in traffic. In trucks, the autos are so easy. You can still manually change the gears like you can in the newer cars, but no clutch pedal. Plus it works so well with the adaptive cruise and hill decent control. Personally, I'm a big proponent of them now. I can't speak for the Volvos but I can say freightliner and Peterbilt both have 12 speeds. Efficiency is better, especially if you use the cruise. Maintenance, I can't really say, but historically automatics usually need more maintenance.
