Why can't i walk down a street free of suggestion?
Is my body the only trait in the eye's of men?
I've got some skin
You want to look in
There lays no reward in what you discover
You spent yourself watching me suffer
Suffer you words, suffer your eyes, suffer your hands
Suffer your interpretation of what it is to be a man
I've got some skin
You want to look in
She does nothing to deserve it
He only wants to observe it
We sit back like they taught us
We keep quiet like they taught us
He just wants to prove it
She does nothing to remove it
We don't want anyone to mind us
So we play the roles that they assigned us
She does nothing to conceal it
He touches her 'cause he wants to feel it
We blame her for being there
But we are all guilty

I heard this song live at 16, I had already been whistled at in the street for three years. People still tell me to be flattered especially "at my age" but it still pisses me off. Boys don't do it, talk to us nicely, you might get somewhere. Girls, answer back, I've done it, makes you feel good.

Is it just me me? Why does a song that maintains simplicity make me want to stomp, jump, frenzy, pull, punch, bang, close my eyes tight, think and say " suffer your interpretation?" I love this song.

Because music these days is so polished that it makes you feel sick. I feel the same. These days i just dig raw, simple stuff like the early The black keys.

+Elle Mar It annoys me this song wasn't written or sung by women, it's the most feminist song I've ever heard. Now where's a man singing about casual violence that blights men's lives.

It was 1988. hardly any guys in the punk scene would listen to a girl band, Ian had some street cred and a following through Minor Threat and even earlier Teen Idols, who better to reprimand those guys listening? As for female bands check out some riot grrrl bands like Bikini Kill, l7, Babes in Toyland. Ian Mackaye, the vocalist was/is a strong supporter of the movement and women's rights in general. taken from an article: "At Fugazi show in 1991 at Washington, DC community hall, they asked Fire Party’s Amy Pickering to perform the visceral track to make the socially conscious track intensely more personal." Here's a clip from it vimeo.com/67422312 and also "in 1988 at a show in Washington, mere days after a violent skinhead, white power demonstration had abused and assaulted members of the gay community in the same town. Mackaye performed and dedicated this song, usually about the victimization of women at the hands and eyes of men, and turned the tune into a song about homosexuals being attacked in the park at night (Tyler-Ameen, 2011)" If I have a hero it's probably Ian Mackaye, he's just a real good guy all around.

I love "Doll Parts" by Hole, it says it all too. I relate to this song because I have been whistled and shouted at since I was 12, I was also groped by teachers and other teens and it sums up the anger I've always had over it, when I heard it live it blew me away. I admire Ian greatly and at the gig I went to he was anti violence, I didn't get it at the time because to be honest with you I partly went to punk gigs to laugh at men in the mosh pit but when I realised how serious violence got in the sates I understood. Men I know also have real fear of random violence from other men and this needs to be talked about.

Even further evidence that Fugazi was the fucking coolest band. So cool of them to bring this very real shit, the shit that women go through every day, shit that a lot of (decent) men are completely unaware of, into their music. They always sang about real stuff, they are so good.

Fugazi are legends, 13 songs is a masterpiece and this is its crown. Any man who doesn't see the message in this song is, as Cobain said, 'He's the one who likes all our pretty songs..and likes to sing along....but he knows not what it means'...or something along those lines

I would like to say...more doctors should listen to fugazi because I think it's important to analyze what the say and why they feel that way and since not everything they say is things they do or should ever it's important to take into account taht in society and the world there's at least 1 case of everything even if it's not fully manifest by symptoms or actions or whatever the idea or infection or suggestion is...

Fuckin' right you are. Returned to this song today because last night I encountered two separate men on two separate late night trains who looked me right in the eye and fucking touched themselves and said shit to me. And all I felt was rage and helplessness (I'm young, I'm kind of skinny and I'm the only girl on the last train. I just wanted to ignore it and not get into a potentially violent situation). We need feminism because this shit continues to happen. Misogyny is harmful for everyone.

@aworldanonymous i didn't misunderstand the issue, was just goofing on his comment.. bottom line though is that neither men nor women are perfect. i think overall it simply comes down to balance. dominance on either side of the coin doesnt change much because its still the same coin. it is the way it is because that is the way it's supposed to be, even if some dont like it. natural order of things and such. goodbye

For the same reason when we study civil rights, we study mostly the actions of black people fighting for their rights - because at the time it was most commonly black people who faced civil inequalities. Of course that isn't saying they weren't the only people facing civil injustices.

oddly enough i never took this to be a song about rape. because off suffering their words, their eyes, their hands, i dress as plainly as possible most of the time. it's not my fault i'm built like this. at least i've gotten to the point i'll just put a man's hand in near breaking position if he tries to touch me. what can i say i live in a rough neighborhood. :D i've always taken it as a commentary of women like myself and how we cn be made uncomfortable by what society accepts.

Sure. There are many salons that charge woman more. A girl comes in for a trim, with short hair, the same length as a man's, and she will be charged the $40 that costs men $20. Or at the dry cleaners - same material, same item of clothing, and it will cost more.
