Harold Wood to Rainham following the River Ingrebourne | London Loop Sections 22 & 23
A London River walk following the River Ingrebourne through the London Borough of Havering. This walk also follows Sections 22 and 23 of the London Loop. We start at Harold Wood Station then turn into Oak Road which leads us to Harold Wood Park and Pages Wood where we get our first sighting of the Ingrebourne River. The Ingrebourne rises on South Weald Common and flows through Havering to the Thames at Rainham.
The Romford Recorder reports that the "earliest mention comes in a charter of the boundaries of Upminster Hall manor from 1062, four years before William the Conqueror. There it’s called “Ingceburne” - probably the river of somebody called “Inga”.
The route takes into the beautiful Ingrebourne Valley through Upminster to the site of RAF Hornchurch. There are still a number of WW2 pillboxes and Tet Turrets in Hornchurch Country Park. Numerous birds can be seen around Ingrebourne Marshes. A cow tries to eat my camera. We get a glorious sunset in Hornchurch Country Park.
The walk ends at sunset at Rainham Station.
