I shot a few rolls of this back in 2016 when it didn’t cost 8 million dollars, and I loved the results I got. Shot a roll at a concert in a dimly lit venue and got great images back. It was decently grainy, but definitely less grainy than the results you got. I think a lot of that grain is due to the expiration.

As for a use case, I can only think of one; I'm thinking it would be super useful for wildlife photographers. Super long lenses usually aren't the fastest, but you still want a high shutter speed to capture the animals sharply. It's daylight balanced too

i guess (also due to the name) that natura 1600 was probably marketed at your average wannabe NatGeo photographer shooting animals, etc. at long focal lengths. And since dusk and dawn are the most promising times to observe wildlife, the high ISO in combination with the daylight balance does make sense.

The Natura S Point n shoot is also really cool cause when it's shooting Natura or any other 1600 iso dx code it shoots in a special "night" mode where it turns off flash, sets exposure compensation to +2, and shoots everything at it's maximum F1.9 aperture to take better night photos

Double fun fact for future editing Jason, the f1.9 would only be unlocked on the Natura camera when loaded with Natura1600… any other film you would be limited to f2.8 max aperture.

I still have a dozen rolls left of this stuff from 2017-18. From my time using it, my best results were always during the day. The strength of the grain is too distracting for low light shots. You always feel that you've metered incorrectly but that's just Natura grain. I would also say that it has my favourite blues of any film stock I've used. I preferred the Venus 800 film stock in low light conditions. Not the same colours but didn't have the overbearing grain. Unfortunately that was discontinued around the same time as Natura.
@artstudionagoya9605

I use to shoot Superia a lot before they discontinued it. You know there is to types of Fuji superia 400: x-tra and premium. I think the high speed version of x-tra is Fuji Natura and the high speed version of premium was Fuji Venus 800. Natura had the muted color with the browns and the greens in the shadows and Venus had the vivid color with deep blues like the Premium. Also I think Fuji really stoped production before the end of the expiration date. I think like recently Fuji use to have the film in freezer for years after the finish production and still selling the film. When I was using it back in the day I notice a quality shift at the en of the production in 2019. Compared to the negs I had from previous years.

dang. I was really hoping to see a shot of the image at 8:00 with the train car doors open. I love the composition and how the lights in the open doorways highlight the texture of the tiles on the floor. Also good color contrast with the orange text on the sign and warm tiles to the cool lights being immitted from the train. I really wonder how it would look with this film stock Edit: ah. Maybe I can help on the daylight balance. When that film came out “high key” photos were really popular in Japan. Any magazine, any music video, etc had this over bright, strong bright blue / green tones. I think instax models from that time also had a “high key” mode. So the Natura and the camera they made with it, kind off fit this desire to make high key photos. All the marketing shots definitely matched the look I got the film back then once, it was super expensive already (I think paid about ¥2000 or $20, when an Across super presto went for like ¥700 or $7). So in summary, always niche, always expensive

This would find use in 120 as mentioned. With the 100mm lens in my grandfather's old folding camera, and the slow lens, any way you can get faster shutter times is good. So many places I'd shoot more if I didn't need a tripod because I was having to shoot slower than 1/100th. I don't see why they didn't try to market that angle with 120s.

Im in Tokyo right now and this film makes sense for the current weather, Its often cloudy, tall building with long shadowing streets. I decided to bring 10 or so rolls of 400H that I had been hoarding as I felt Japan was the best justification for it and honestly the 400ISO, f/2 at 1/50th is sometimes not adequate. This would make a lot of sense.

For when you shoot some interior photos lit by cheap fluorescent tubes, you should get a cheap FL-D or FL-W filter. They don't cut any light but will add a bit of magenta to make things easier to correct.

I recently shot a roll of Fujifilm 400 at 800 and plan to have it pushed as such. If it comes out half decent I might even try having a roll shot at and then pushed to 1000 or 1600. I heard it makes the shadows really off color but tbh I can't wait to see how messed up the colors get!

This video is my first time seeing results from this film stock and I think it looks really nice, some scenes you shot turned out perfect. I'd love to have it for a winter trip to Iceland because I got the impression the sunlight is not as bright there - I packed plenty of Portra 800 (because I like the look of it, wasn't expecting to need the speed) when I went, but I could definitely have used another stop here and there either to avoid motion blur or increase depth of field.

Natura 1600 is the perfect cloudy / early evening outdoor film. Such a shame that they discontinued it. I would happily sacrifice all other Fuji film stocks for Fuji to just bring this one back. It is certainly not a sunny day film. ...I have one Natura in the freezor and am scared to shoot it, but I will have to soon as the sensitivity is going down...

Color negative still camera film stocks are generally daylight balanced because you can change the color balance when printing (which is what they were originally designed for). Not sure why this is different for motion picture films, but I assume it must be less convenient to do the color adjustment.

Fujifilm used to sponsor formula 1 (Renault I think) I believe and also world touring cars, I wonder if it was developed for use by Fuji photographers covering high speed sports and using super telephoto lenses. Those lenses generally have a high minimum aperture like MF so it would make sense given it’s daylight balanced.

Natura beuty we need that film stock ASAP the dress gave me goosebumps of Arizona tea...oh my gawd
