I think you missed the point. For street photographers, a group of people at which this camera is obviously targeted, there are many upgrades that are worth it. One of the frustrations on the x100s is its inability to manual focus in OVF. Before you say "just use EVF", there are many times when viewing the scene through the OVF is superior, such as when you're "camping" in front of a scene to get the shot. You can see people who are about to enter the scene so you can get your shutter finger ready. in the x100s, you'd have to prefocus before switching into OVF, and if anything out of the ordinary happens that required re-focus, you're basically screwed. The ability to manual focus in OVF is a major feature. I have never though to myself "I wish this thing had an articulating screen". I don't tend to use the screen for anything but review. I almost always use the viewfinder. Street photographers aren't trying to get interesting shots of buildings or leaves that have fallen to the ground. At least for me, shooting at humanistic perspectives is what I'm after. This means shooting the scene from where you'd expect the viewer to be sitting or standing. An articulating screen wouldn't get much use and likely add weight and bulk to the camera, an overall negative. Last but not least, you sort of panned the Classic Chrome simulation. You said nobody would care, yet here I am considering the upgrade specifically for that feature. Getting that Kodachrome 64 look is something I've tried getting for a while now without completely convincing results. Alien Skin has a simulation which to my eyes looks a bit harsh. VSCO won't even try. If Fuji's engineers get anywhere close to Kodachrome, and in-camera to boot with no processing, I'm sold.

One nuance of the x100 was it was a great camera for documenting live gigs. It's the best camera for that purpose I've found since the Sony TRV 900. The 900E was far superior to the later 'pro' VX210 in one critical way - the sound. The Fuji X100 is better than the x100 T for the same reason. Some nuance of the mic gives a balanced sound for rock bands and doesn't distort the drums. I ran a test and went through all the mic settings on the x100 T but nothing matched the X100 preset. Admittedly this is a niche feature but I thought it was worth mentioning for the benefit of all you gig goers out there!

TheCameraStoreTV Chris, the rangefinder-style OVF on this camera is its reason for existence. Without it, why would you even bother with it? You could get X-E2 instead and be able to use lenses other than 23 mm.
@ZYNND10 жыл бұрын
agree! this is the reason why Fuji was making this camera to separate itself with the Canon's and Nikon's DLSRs or Sony's Point and Shoots. Furthermore why would Fuji put the articulated screen if this was meant to be a Rangefinder "substitute"? I think TCS missed the whole point of this camera.
@eidrag10 жыл бұрын
ZYNND Doesn't meant that rangefinder can't have tilting/touch screen, it's a nice feature to be added so that a camera can be more versatile. Instead, manual focus ring? Yeah, that should be a must for rangefinder, which Fuji forgot to put there.

This has probably been said in other comments, but I feel like this review was missing the point of this camera. If you want an articulating screen pop, culture enthusiast camera, to be used the way you had been using it in this review, you buy a Sony or Olympus or one of the other Fuji models. This cameras is meant to appeal to those of us who Love the tactile sensation of a film camera from a minimalist point of view, and who wanted a digital camera that gives a similar experience (that's also not as expensive as a Leica). Sure this camera offers video, wi-Fi, and some other gimmicks, but that's not why you buy it. For instance I love having an optical viewfinder on digital camera like this because it saves battery life and there's enough information in the optical viewfinder to carry on my purpose which is usually night time street photography. Also shooting with an EVF at night practically makes you blind in one eye. Being able to choose the EVF for specific situations is really an added convenience that makes this camera awesome. I love that I can set the settings I'm going to use at a glance with traditional dials even when the cameras off, allowing me to be prepared for the moment. I respect that Fuji listens to those who take this camera seriously and sticks with the things that work rather than continuously redesigning the entire package each release. If the sensor never changed I would probably be happy with it for rest of my life, that's the kind of attitude you have when you search out a camera like this. Heck I wish someone would produce a camera like this that's only manual dials, no added buttons, shoots raw only, and without an LCD screen. If you understand exposure inside and out, you'll shoot with confidence and trust your abilities just like the film days, and you'll be a better photographer because of it.

That's right....(EVF comment you made), I prefer the EVF these days over the OVF. The one in my X-T1 is wonderful. The big thing for me is, I want to see my exposure before I press the button. It's not like I couldn't guesstimate the exposure compensation I need when using an OVF because I was fine with my Nikon DSLRs in the past, but it's so much quicker and less guessing using the EVF. Just my opinion. I know some people still prefer the OVF. I never used the OVF on my X100S though.

Just bought this camera, been playing around with it for a few days, so far, I love it. I'll give it a thorough workout in the next few days. There is one point about the OVF/EVF I'd like to make - I have to disagree with you about the OVF (what you say around 4.00). I noticed that in low light, when you zoom in (rear wheel click) it does start skipping frames (I think the magnification is too much). This is very distracting, and I would take my d800's big, bright OVF any day over the EVF. That said, in good light, the EVF is fantastic. Oh, by the way, shooting using the OVF has it's own problems, namely focusing. The focus square is too big, and the camera focuses on the background far too often in this mode. There are workarounds of course, and I didn't expect d800 like focusing to begin with ;) I bought this camera for a variety of reasons, and so far I couldn't be happier :)

Many comments show how much people are used to get major changes in all generations, like the smartphones do... But one has to give credits to Fuji for not pushing bullshit marketing to customers. This X100T is an update, hence the name (and not X200), so it keeps most of what made it's predecessor a fabulous camera. However, I agree the video could have been improved a bit more... but for the rest, this T version is really a nice update of the S with all the expected features of 2014. For all specs fetishists, wait for the X-Pro2 ;-)

The X100S has third stop increments, that's what the backside clicker on the top right is for. That being said, including them on the aperture ring is the way to go and supports the whole concept of this camera.

I suspect the X100F (fourth?) will be a more substantial upgrade (similar to the X100S compared to the original X100). I predict a newer sensor, image processor, lens, and articulating screen. @randeezy391410 жыл бұрын
Two completely different cameras! IMO the main selling point of the Fuji X100 series is the wonderful hybrid viewfinder. If the OVF isn't important to you, then the LX100 might be better for you. The X100 series features a 35mm equivalent prime lens. If you prefer a zoom, the LX100 will be the better choice. LX100 - Lower price - Zoom - Better video - Slightly smaller X100T - Better image quality - Hybrid viewfinder - Great JPEG's Personally, I feel anyone interested in the X100T should really consider buying the X100S at a nice discount instead. It's a great camera (same sensor, processor, and lens as the X100T) and it will get some of the new goodies of the X100T via firmware updates. The X100S is in no way outdated and it won't be for some time. The money saved by buying the X100S could be used for accessories, or a nice weekend trip, or a few photography workshops, a subscription to Lynda.com, etc.

I think that having optical viewfinder is excellent. I am usually against multiple features for the sake of multiple features or utility, but in this case, I must admit that criticizing inclusion of an optical viewfinder and calling it redundant is uncalled for. Sorry. On the other hand, the name "Fujifilm" could have been changed to Fuji or Fujinon, or something. No, I don't find the word "film" redundant, but I find it unnecessary, same like putting name Turbo on sun glasses back in the '80s. It's out of place a bit.

I think you need a holiday mate.. you seem bored with some pretty cool things, The thing with the x100's, xt1 and xpro camera is the experience, its not a sony, or a lumix.. Fuji is adopting an experience with these cameras, people dont buy a x100 to take photos from the back LCD, they like the dials on top of the camera, old style look at it, the aperture ring, the pretty amazing manual focus setup. This camera puts a film style device in a modern device and doing a great job of attempting to marry to the 2 together. I know it's the 3rd camera thats pretty similar to the last, but you have to hand it to them for refining what is already a great camera which provides a great experience.. The person this kind of camera is aimed at doesn't care about a flip screen. You talk about street photography and ranger finders, yet go on about the lack of a flip screen

TheCameraStoreTV I think you guys really missed a unique opportunity to throw the conversion lenses on it and show us what it can do at wider and longer focal lengths. Oh well, maybe for the #X100U
@randeezy391410 жыл бұрын
That's already common knowledge. Just check out flickr or any good online photography forum. The wide angle adapter is very great with no loss of image quality. The tele converter is also very good, just a bit bulky.

Randolph Knackstedt I'm not interested in image quality examples: I've already seen those. I wanted the ergonomic and autofocus performance opinions of someone I trust.

Jose Heybucket You comment seems oddly out of place. Did you follow me here in a fit of...rage?

So you want a review for products released ages ago to be included in a review for a new camera? That's one of the worst ideas I've heard in awhile.
@tgmwright10 жыл бұрын
Ian K the conversion lenses are being sold as accessories for the X100T. Are you saying we shouldn't review cameras with lenses that weren't released at the same time as the body? How stupid are you exactly?

x100s means second x100. x100T stands for the third. The next model, assuming they continue this trend would be the x100F not x100U

Looks like the only thing that "Classic Chrome" does is shift to a slightly blue bias and kills shadow detail to emulate slide film. Meh.

Spot on guys and that was what I argue with people on DPR. The tilt screen and the DOF scale is a must on a street camera. Apart from that seems to be another job well done.

Articulating screens are for tourists.
@randeezy391410 жыл бұрын
And for photographers that often shoot in uncomfortable positions. They're also great for candids because you can look down at the camera like the old twin reflex cameras and people won't realize you're composing their photograph.

I've been in situations with this camera where an articulated screen would have been great. In the end, I had to guess cos I could not get my head into position to see the screen without looking like I was shagging a wet forest floor.

articulate; no way that would kill the whole point of classy camera
@DamianBrown10 жыл бұрын
Why whinge about a missing articulated screen?! I love it on the xt but I appreciate the design of the x100S, as I have it, is without articulation… so I don't whinge. I just pick up the xt?! Oh wait, it doesn't have vertical controls. I'm gonna whinge.;)

AF sucks, wonder why no one mentioned. Had to go manual even in high daylight contrasty scenery, no AF lock :( even with face detect, still no succes, but still love the camera, takes great pictures!

fuji is way behind the competition in autofocus, even on the x-pro2 its incosistent. thats basically the only real downside of all the cameras.

+Digi20 the auto focus really doesn't suck
@Digi208 жыл бұрын
Chris Thomas thats also highly lens dependent, for example the 35 1.4 really sucks, the newer lenses with linear motors are way better
@hoad478 жыл бұрын
+Digi20 I don't have any issues at all focussing with the x100t I generally use the 5d3 and really it's fine
@hoad478 жыл бұрын
Are you referring to the speed of the focus or the ability to lock on?

They probably didnt want to give the sensor an advantage over their XE-2 and XT-1 cameras for marketing purposes..

I would love to see this camera, this size with a fixed zoom on it at a constant f1.8 that is sharp from 10mm to 100mm that just neatly folds away, with fast and accurate autofocus, no noise at and below 3200 ISO, 24mp sensor and an evf that is indisdinguishable from an ovf image that can magnify with crisp sharpness threads in fabric. It would kill off all the fujis below it and the sony rx100 and maybe even the a5000 and a6000. I'm sure the optics guys can make this happen, we landed a robot on a comet for goodness sake which was traveling at 84,000mph. Please don't say I'm dreaming.

Yeh and maybe a mode that has Joel Meyerowitz's brain programmed into it so it tells you where to point the camera!!!!1
