Large surface combatants are becoming more and more vulnerable by the day. The saying "don't put too many eggs in one basket" comes to mind.
@douginorlando6260
@douginorlando6260 Ай бұрын
The only thing protecting such a large basket of eggs is the threat of major escalation/retaliation. If a decision is made to break a future embargo of shipping (for example if all Iranian oil tankers leaving port are hijacked/pirated by NATO), then a carrier is the way to make continuing the enforced embargo an all or nothing type proposition. A task force of 2027 will have to defend against a swarm of hundreds of drones more sophisticated than the few drones that are damaging Russian Black Sea ships. Submersibles look like the surest way to survive a hot war before the end of the decade (especially if attacking drones are embedded in a swarm of 100s of reusable decoys).

@@douginorlando6260I dont think that type 1130 ciws would have a problem dealing with sea drone swarms. The few (not all the ships claimed have actually been hit) Russian ships that have been destroyed had quite antiquated defenses. Chinese are very wise to select technology optimized for their needs, unlike US going for wasteful grandiose or for unsustainable hegemony power. For regional defense, conventional power is still the best combined option as its not just cheaper to build and operate, but also safer and easier to maintain than nuclear power. Nuclear powered carrier is only useful for global power projection requiring sustain far distance deploying period. But that doesn't means such carrier does not require any replenishment like food. Since China harbour no such global hegemony ambition of USN, it only needs a few nuclear powered carriers to defend its global interest. The rest should be diesel powered for its regional defense purpose. A total of 3 conventional and 3 nuclear powered carriers should be ideal for China, while it develops the full electric powered shaft less propulsion system.

China could license the same Soviet's antique VTOL technology that USN copied from Russia Yakovlev Yak-141 to realize J35 VTOL easily. However US F35b has proved Soviet's VTOL technology powered by huge Lift Fan in the jet belly is unstable prone to accident, with very short range & few ammo lifting capability making it quite useless &with very inefficient dead weight. So China had patented its own extra front jet engines VTOL design last year that can be use d for lifting during take off, as well as propulsion when cruising. However VTOL is not necessary for carrier with EMALS like Fujian. Its more for big warships that might wish to add some fighter jets. But with drones available now, such needs are getting less required.

Both Liaoning and Shandong have two to three full crews each. During training voyages, each ship actually sails with two crews. One crew mans the ship, the other crew sails in the "cruise ship" (one of PLAN's Daguan-class barracks ships Xu Xiake and Li Daoyuan) and slowly rotate personnel to the carrier. In the video you can see the "cruise ship". She's the white ship that looks like, well, a small cruise ship, berthed behind the Fujian. Not sure which one she is. Daguans can carry 2,500 personnel each. This is actually the reason Shandong was declared combat-ready much faster than Liaoning (2 years vs. 5). PLAN basically just transferred one of the three original Liaoning crews to their second carrier. However, they probably can't repeat this with the much larger and more complex Fujian.
