I'm a newbie to Fuji from the Canon world with 20 years experiences. After watching this video, I realized that choosing S10 + teleconverter x2 + 70-300 was a right and smart choice. I am very excited about shooting with Fujifilm and really love it.

I take my 70-300 out along with a 1.4 TC and throw in a 23mm F2 and find this makes for a light weight wide choice system. I love my 100-400 too but this is mostly used for special occasions such as Wetland Trust days. They both take great pictures attached to my XT3. Thanks for your great review(s), please keep it up 👀👀👍

I’m an older but still active retired photographer. I owned the 100-400 for years and really liked the results. But, at my age (76) size and weight becomes even more of an issue. Specifically, I found my age-limited hand strength made handling the 100-400 gradually less comfortable, caused by both the weight and the girth of the lens. I never dropped the lens, but I worried that I would, and that took away a lot of the fun. Interesting, my younger friends who used my lens felt the same way. The 70-300, on the other hand, is just the right size and weight to make the entire photographic experience a pleasure again.

Great stuff. Today I took out my new 70-300mm for the first time. I'm 48 but was also worried about general weight, as I want to carry two strong lenses. I htink my X-T5, 16-55mm and 70-300mm are going to be a fantastic combination that I can just about happily lug about in my backpack in the countryside. For urban situations or at night, I'll probably carry the f1.2 56mm instead of the 70-300mm.

In the autumn of 2022 when I 65, I went to the local camera shop to buy a long focal length zoom lens and there was a choice a new 70-300mm or a used 100-400mm. On lifting the 100-400mm, it didn't seem to be too bad but when I put it on my little X-E3 I knew that it would be too heavy to comfortably manage. The 70-300mm was the correct choice and I can walk a mile to a nature reserve, take some photographs and walk back without being bothered by the weight. When flying to Gran Canaria for a holiday, the camera in a camera bag along with the 70-300mm lens in its case easily fitted into my backpack on the flight.

for me as someone who shoots both FF and Fuji APSc the smaller lens is my preference. I take the fuji when I want less size and weight which to me is the main advantage of the system. thanks, for the detailed review it told me what I wanted to know and that is optically the 70-300 is on par with the more expensive lens.

Thanks, Matthieu. As someone who already owns the 100-400 I don't think there is an advantage to me also owning the 70-300. However, as soon as the 150-600 turns up it will be bye-bye the 100-400 and I may 'backfill' the range with the 70-300 at that point. The information on the use of TCs is very useful. It confirms my results with the TCs on the 100-400 so it is good to get a second opinion.

If I was buying one of these lenses today, I would have gone with the 70-300 because of the size and weight. But since I already had the 100-400 when the other was released, I´ll stick with it. Thank you for the great review 😊

Excellent reviews thanks. One reason for the slower autofocus with x2 convertor on the 100-400 is that I've read it disables phase focusing and relies only on slower contrast focusing. The x1.4 still enables both focusing modes to be active. So I now only use the x2 in really good light. I'm really overall happy with the light weight and performance of the 70-300 on my x-s10. I returned the 100-400 as I could only use it with tripod.
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons 2 жыл бұрын
It depends on the camera. The X-T4 and X-S10 maintain phase detection at f/11 if I'm not mistaken (if it was contrast detection I would have noticed a much bigger difference, as well as a different behaviour with the movement of the lens elements).

I have an Xt4 and I pair it with the 70-300 and1.4x teleconverter. I find this good enough for my wildlife photography as I usually get good quality images. The close up capabilities of the 70-300 are also a great feature. It is a lightweight set up which is good as I’m now 68. Sure, there are times when I could do with more reach but the 100-400 is too heavy and pricey for me. Perhaps a 2x teleconverter is the answer for mr. Thank you for this video.

You can use most telephoto lenses for wildlife photography, some work better than others, the 70'-300 works well on a APSC Camera body, I have used glass like this photographing birds and wildlife from a 14 foot kayak. While some people use a teleconvers on this type of lens, the loss of light can be a problem if you are shooting in low light such as early morning or evening hours when some wildlife and birds are most active. This morning while out walking my dog, I brought along my XH2 with the 100-400mm fujifilm lens. I was able to photograph a great blue heron feeding in a creek that is located on the perimeter of the park I walk my dog in, my Iso was 5000 ,exposure compilation -1, I was just able to get fast enough shutter speed at f 5.6 as long as the movement was at a minimum, later on I photographed a fawn that still had its spots feeding along the same creek. There are times when I find nothing as far as wildlife goes to photograph and days like this morning when things are great. I carry this camera setup in my vehicle as I never know when a photography opportunity will present its self. While the 70-300 is lighter,less expensive and more travel friendly, the 100 to 4oomm lens is a much better option for wildlife.

Thank you for the really good review. I have both, The 70-300 is better for travel or when you want to be lighter but the 100-400 is the best lens by a good margin. Not only for the 100mm extra reach, that allows you to be closer and have mode blurry background, but also the tripod collar makes a huge difference when using the tripod as its a much better balanced system. So for travel and the dayts I dont want to carry my main camera bag I use the 70-300. When I do want the absolute best IQ and experience with a Tripod (Landscape photography for example) I take the 100-400,.

As always, excellent review. As an amateur travel photographer, I prefer lighter and more compact gear, so the 100-400mm is not my cup of tea, and I guess the upcoming 150-600mm will be even heavier and bulkier. I have the 55-200mm which is OK but sometimes I need more reach, so I intend to get the 70-300 (and the teleconverter) in the near future.

I luckily bought my whole Fufjifilm setup just a few weeks before the 70-300 dropped and was able to return my 55-200mm after buying the 70-300mm, and I couldn't be more happy with it! They're practically the same exact size/weight/everything, just with better more modern quality and longer reach. The 70-300 never ceases to amaze me with the quality I get out of it, hope you have a good one with it too! 100-400 also too big for me

Another awesome video, thank you so much for the detailed comparison, Mathieu! I walked around both lenses for a long time, but in the end I opted for “you cannot have enough reach” 🙂 and for wildlife 100mm more or less is huge. I got luckily a great deal on the XF 100-400mm plus 1,4 tTC and so far I am really happy with the lens. I am using a gripped X-T3.

I also use the XT-3 with the battery grip & 100-400mm. I find this to be a good combination with a nice balance- although it is NOT light weight. If I need even longer reach, I attach the 1.4 tele extender, losing 1 stop of light. All in all I am satisfied with this setup & the optical stabilisation on this lens is very good & much needed at these longer focal lengths. Love your channel, Mathieu!😊👍

This review is the best I've seen written or via video! I recently purchased a used 100-400mm (to use with my XH-1 and XPro3) after giving up on obtaining a in-stock 70-300mm.So, the XH-1's stabilization is not additive to the 100-400mm stabilization? That is disappointing! I hope there will be a firmware update for the 100-400mm that will fix that. I'm not so sure the price difference was totally worth it (for my amateur use) by going with the higher priced 100-400mm, but I am very satisfied with the the 100-400mm. PS. Great conclusions!

I think it’s probably related to the X-H1 ibis rather than the lens, but I could be wrong. That said, with those long focal lengths, the OIS plays a more important role anyway.

I'm very happy with my 70-300mm for it's nice small size and light weight but knowing the difference with the Fuji 100-400mm is good. :-) I believe that Fuji is working on a 150-600mm lens, I'm looking forward to that and curious what it will bring.

I've been using the Fuji XT-4 for almost two years now with the very compact and budget friendly XC 50-230mm f/4.5-6.7 (I know a bit slow compared to your telephoto lenses :( but still capable of producing amazing wildlife videography!). This camera and lens really jump started a new hobby for me since the start of the pandemic. I've been particularly pleased with the stabilization but of course low light scenarios can be tough when limited to f/6.7 (really need to crank up the ISO). Nevertheless I’ve really enjoyed getting outside and capturing some beautiful Ohio wildlife. I plan to share some of my work on YT soon. First video is already up!

I have the xf70-300. I like it, I'm pleased I bought it as I like the size and focal lengths, but it is soft as pudding! Uncropable! To the point where I'm wondering if I have a lemon on my hands. I've experimented with shutting off the ois at high shutter speeds but have had mixed results. I wish they had kept the ois switch on the lens and losing focus catastrophically when you zoom in and out gets old quick. If you're just getting in to photography I think you'd be better off just grabbing an xc50-230 off ebay...
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons

The first sample I rented had a serious optical quality issue, the images were just too soft. Fortunately the rental company had a second sample and they exchanged it right away. I thought it was just bad luck at first, but now I wonder if you got a bad copy and there are some quality control issues with this lens.

This is by far the best and most detailed comparison I’ve seen regarding these two lenses. Thank you! 70-300 looks like an incredible value by comparison. One thing you didn’t cover in your review was precision framing while on a tripod due to sagging caused by the front heaviness of the lens. With the 55-200 this is super annoying at the long end, and I imagine it would be even worse at 300mm. For some, having the tripod collar to reduce or eliminate that problem might make it worth paying double for the more expensive lens. The sagging is THAT annoying. It can cause you to miss shots - for example a distant landscape with rapidly changing mist or clouds could go from the perfect composition to complete trash in a few seconds - seconds you could lose trying to achieve the desired framing with one of the non-collared lenses.
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! About the sagging problem, isn't it also related to the quality of the tripod head? There are also lens support brackets that could solve the problem.
@RichardSilvius
@RichardSilvius 2 жыл бұрын
@@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons I'll have to look into those brackets, I had not heard about that. As far as what causes the sagging... it's hard to pinpoint. I was using the appropriate Really Right Stuff ballhead for the weight of the camera and lens - a little overkill actually. But have also experienced the same using a manfrotto head designed for much larger cameras. While I can't rule out the heads, it seems to me to be the lens itself when fully extended. Maybe there's a tiny bit of play in the construction that allows it to happen... I'm not sure.

I never tested the 50-140mm with birds, but I used it several times for sports events. Not sure if the 100-400mm is faster, I find both really good and on the same level. I guess the 150-600mm will be announced alongside Fuji's new flagship X-H2 in May (according to Fujirumors), but we'll have to see for the release date. You can take more than decent photos at f/8 as long as the light is acceptable, even in cloudy days.

@@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons yeah I've gotten great birds in flight with the 50-140 with the 1.4x TC, which of course bumps up the aperture to f/4 through about f/8 where I'd shoot. Of course the reach isn't crazy far but that lens is certainly one of fuji's top lenses! It's not necessarily in the sports, action, wildlife range but if you are close enough then it absolutely can do it very well. I'm just torn on getting a used 100-400mm, or a new 30-70mm while I wait for that 150-600mm, because it seems like it could answer a lot of our needs! who knows what the price of this new one will be though? Merci Mathieu. I have a 55-200 zoom lens but I will do some wildlife photopgrahy in a few months (200 seems a bit too short). The 70-300 seems very interesting (combined with a X-T3 camera).

Hello Mathieu, thanks a lot for this very serious comparison ( a lot of work explains the test and the check the differences between both length (Chapeau!). If you may also test the Xf70-300 mm during a soccer match it will nice ( as you have the experience of the XF100-400 with this sport) . I use the 50-140 +1.4 teleconverter but I would like to get more reach to avoid cropping in the edition. I have a doubt about the focusing keeper rate of the 70-300, when you have to change quickly the focal length ( when the soccer striker is coming in your direction) and just after changing the focal length, when you have to use the continuous focus. Thanks a lot for your high quality reviews

Nice video. Do you think the Sigma 150-600mm (with adapter) is better value for money than the XF 100-400mm + 1.4x TC for BiF photography? Until the XF 150-600mm comes out it seems there's not really many options for telephoto lenses for Fujifilm camera. Thanks.

Would that be the EF version plus adapter ? I never tried adapted lenses on Fuji cameras so I don’t know how good the AF is.

I am at crossroads to sell off my XF100-400 and keep only XF70-300 (that I bought after reading your review last year). I can see a frame in your video where you have attached 2X TC to 70-300. How is the picture quality of this combination? If I got a 1.4X TC I could get the similar reach with XF100-400 in the longer end. So if to keep it or not?
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons 8 ай бұрын
The performance degrades a bit with the TC 2x, and so does the optical quality. It's not terrible, but you can notice it. I think 70-300mm and TC 1.4x is the better combination.

Thanks for the review! I've the 70-300 alongside a xt20. I like wildlife protography, and at this point I'm thinking on selling them and switch to Sony A7iii mainly because of the AF. What do you suggest? Wait for innovation in AF for next gen Fuji cameras o change to Sony?
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons 2 жыл бұрын
I’ve had better results with the A7 III overall. With Fujifilm cameras, it is also a matter of finding the right setting combination. Fujirumors mentioned a new camera coming in May and it should be a new flagship (X-H2), so hopefully we’ll see an updated AF among other things.

Hello from Belgium, I have the combo X-S10 + XF 70-300 + 1.4 TC I'm verry happy with this set I would like to buy an 2.0 TC but I'm afraid the picture is bad...or wait the 150-600 mm Sorry for my english ;-)
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons 2 жыл бұрын
You loose a bit of sharpness with the TC 2.0x (you can see examples in the video) and the fastest aperture at 300mm becomes f/11, so you will need decent light conditions to get something out of it. But it is an affordable option to get more reach. Or you can stick with the 70-300mm + 1.4 TC and use the 1.25x crop mode in camera, or crop in post (if you're not doing that already). We need to wait for the 150-600mm, but I suspect it will be large and expensive.

Fuji xs10 with xf70-300 or Sony a6400 with sony 70-350 would a better option for compact wildlife system? My friend asked me what he should buy for wildlife, he often takes a camera on bicycle so it have to fit into handelbarbag. I'm landscape photographer and fuji user but from what I've read a6400 will have better AF than Fuji. If Sony really has better AF is 70-350 a good enough lens compared to xf70-300? I worry that Tamron 150-500 which would be a perfect fit for a6400 will not fit in his handelbarbag :p

The Sony has a better AF overall, but I have no experience on the 70-350mm lens. With the Fuji, there is compatibility with the teleconverters which can be a nice thing to have the day you friend wants more reach. What are the bag's dimensions?

I think the 70-300mm can work well: fast AF, excellent quality. X-S10, X-T3 and X-T4 have the same AF system (Fuji updated the firmware of the X-T3 to raise it to the same level) so choosing the camera comes to the budget and features (for example the X-T3 has weather sealing, two card slots, better EVF). I'm assuming it's mostly outdoor motorsport?

Hi! Amazing comparison :) Do you have comments on the image quality regarding the 1.4 and 2x teleconverters? I have the 70-300mm and am interested in taking pictures of the moon, either alone or with some foreground elements. I wonder if cropping the image using the 1.4 TC provides a higher image quality than the 2x? Or does cropping the 300mm image leads descent results? Do you have high resolution comparisons for download? Thanks!! :)
