This is one of the best videos on cameras and Fuji I’ve ever watched, and I’ve seen a lot. It deserves to be seen by Fuji’s CEO and should be featured alongside every official Fuji KZbin video and any content made by those spouting nonsense about Fuji cameras. I own many cameras, including the A7RV, ZVE1, A6700, A7CII, Canon R10, Nikon Zfc, Fuji X100V, and, as of last week, the XM5. The XM5’s marketing pitches it as ideal for video blogging, but its focus makes it completely unsuitable for that. It’s like a Porsche with a powerful engine but a wobbly steering wheel: hugely disappointing. Like you, I’ve tested a variety of lenses, but as we both know, the problem isn’t the lenses. The issue is poor software. The hardware: fast processor, sensor, etc.-is on par with other brands, so there’s no excuse. Your video needs more attention. If I’d seen it sooner, I wouldn’t have wasted my money on the XM5.

Your testing just proved that to me as well. Honestly, I love how the X-T5 handles and feels to use, but the AF DISASTER (and I use that term deliberately) is seriously making me consider selling my Fuji kit and going back to my Sony A7R III, even though the lenses are much bulkier and the camera isn't as nice to use on the street as a Fuji... That is the exact reason why I think this is so important in order to make Fujifilm push the boundaries and become a better version of themselves! Everyone wins! However, it is clear to me now after posting your Part 1 video on the X-H2S FB page that there are many users out there who simply do not get the point and has the mentality of "nah ah, I don't see any problems here, I am not having any trouble, this is great, great, great! How dare you question Fujifilm's performance, clearly you don't know how to use the camera properly!". I love that they all jump to negative assumptions, as if someone was questioning the loyalty of their wife or something - which absolutely isn't an analogy that sits well with this situation at all. Well, thanks to the people who dare question a company's performance and not act like mindless yes-nodding-dolls, are the ones that make sure that a company gets the heat up to actually change things for the BETTER. I think hardware capability (processor) plays a significant role too, not only software. Fujifilm X-Trans sensor is probably much more demanding to process. And I suspect, taking X-H2s as example, when Fuji tried to increase AI features (subject detection etc.) in later firmwares, they shifted a lot of processing power from autofocus to AI, thus handicapping aufofocus further. I don't think Fujifilm can improve autofocus much further, till they introduce a much more powerful processor and phase detection autofocus.

I recently bought a 56mm F/1.2 R WR, and upgraded firmware at the same time, and I could feel the lens continuously hunt in a hard fixed stepping motion rather than smooth transition. I thought there was something wrong with the lens, but now I see that there isn't. I love the images that come out of the X-H2s with various lenses, but I cannot use AF for paid work. If not, users who buy into the system, then gets dissapointed, and then told they are the problem, will leave the system for good and so then later, Fuji stops making cameras

A real fanboy wants Fuji to succeed and to do that they need a great and reliable autofocus. So anyone who neglects the obvious issues isn't a real fanboy. 🤷♂

I wanted to buy the xt3 but i think i will keep my xpro2 for longer, even if it doesn t have all the features of more modern cameras ,but i think the autofocus on xpro2,xt2,xt20 ,xe2 was perfect for what it was...one big problem that i encountered all the time was the worming efect on all fujifilm cameras, even using iridient or capture onr didn t change much. Nice video! And thanks for pure information and solid facts about the problems you encounter with fujifilm gear

Thank you so much for your call out with the existing problem. Seems like AF still works mostly on contrast detection, which is very very bad. I upgrade to firmware 7.10 the first hour it was released and test it out. I can live with that but not impress and always waiting for your video to point out the problem that I or another people have not seen. I hope Fujifilm saw your video. You know Corpo always has first priority to fix problem which was mostly call out by an social media influencer, which is also sad. Ps. I think I should downgrade my X-T3 to firmware 3!

I regret that I bought my Fujifilm X-H2 this summer. The autofocus problem is driving me crazy. I have testet the autofocus on my old Nikon D700 - and it nails it every single time and it only takes a split second - even in difficult light conditions. The Nikon D700 is 15 years old! I bought the X-H2 because I wanted a lighter camera. I have invested in filters and flash which will make the loss pretty extensive if I decide to sell it. I don’t think that the autofocus problem will be solved by the time that the updates for the X-H2 model stops because the next X-H3 is announced… I should never have bought into Fujifilm!

It's such a shame... i love everything about my X-T4 but AF. And with release of new platform, it probably will never get fixed. If they could at least give us some frankenstein X-T3 v3 + X-T4 firmware. Seriously fire entire AF department, it would be better if they did nothing for the last 5 years.

AF problem solved. Selling my XH2s on eBay now. Waiting months for an update which is just a simple bugfix. The worst way to burn a lot of money. Fujifilm doesn't care. For them, profitability is more important than reaching the AF performance level Sony had two or three years ago.

Looks like Fuji engineers need to improve the closed-loop or feedback controller for AF. This was like 1st or 2nd year electrical engineering. Not sure if it's thought in software engineering. The stepping indicates the way its implemented is in a more digital fashion and maybe not frequently enough. What is needed is maybe a more analog approach or more frequent steps. (See nyquist theorem on why faster feedback even in steps would result in more smoothness. Essentially make the steps small enough and fast enough that we would hear continous noise and no stepping). Background in Electronics and Software. Written many a FW for microcontrollers. Let me know if you ever need more technical insights. If Fuji is reading, love your cameras. Please keep working on AF.

Multi seem to focus better than xh2s on xt2 when subject has less contrast than background 💀. Seems like new firmwares use mainly contrast points, not phase ones. This whole situation reminds me of the X-TRANS 1 where there were no phase points whatsoever I use xt2 and it’s AF buggs me but when I saw Fuji’s new stuff, I appreciated xt2 more.

Thanks for this video. Can’t make it any clearer how broken the Fuji AF is. I’m five years, two bodies and nine lenses into the ecosystem but no more. Can’t afford to jump to Sony at this time, and it’s such a shame given the pleasing look and ergonomics of Fuji cameras, but working AF is non-negotiable.

Yesterday i was testing the Fuji XF30mm.. LM lens.. the way that the autofocus works.. its hilarious, regardless of the AF mode, Speed, tracking (it is identical to what happens with your 90mm in the H2S.. it seems more a "guess based" AF system). However by testing all the lenses in my X-T3 with SW 5.11 it seems that the most "reliable" AF is at Sens 0, speed -1 :D

Please write whether they can fix it or not. I have xt5, 4 prime lenses I really don't want to play with changing the system. Thanks for your reply

After watching this video i tested my X-S20 with latest firmware. The sound of focus motor is in between of what you have in X-H2 and X-T3, which is "alright", but there is one - very annoying thing - i see the green square showing where exactly it "is" focused, the problem is - after few subject movements it's not. The green focus square shows where it SHOULD focus but when look what's inside green square and see how blurry actually is the area inside... I have a feeling like people who wrote software for green square "tracking" and people who wrote software for moving the lens motor - were different teams, because the green square tracking shows correctly where lens should move its motor, but after a few hand movements I see it just keeps the area inside green square blurred

Great couple of videos, you went really in depth on the investigation. I'm still on an X-T2 and use it for photography, however I share similar sentiment with you regarding firmware upgrades leading to autofocus downgrades. In my experience, using the autofocus on S mode, on single point mode (don't bother with face or eye, I think it was never performant enough on the X-T2) I find that even though the camera confirms focus with the "green box" or beep sound, occasionally images do come out out-of-focus, this appears started to happen after the firmware upgrades but I'm not sure exactly which one. Now you could blame this on user error, ( ok fujifan boy 😉) but in the out-of-focus images I struggle to find any planes in focus, it's like its focused on the extremes either infinity or the the min focusing distance where nothing in the frame is in focus. Anyway just sharing here in-case it helps you with your investigation or if anyone else has experienced anything similar?

I now need to check where my firmware is on my xt3. I use the sigma 18-35 for video and I really don't see these issues and I usually use Multi. Maybe it's a good thing I haven't upgraded yet. Might test it for myself to see haha! Thanks for these videos.

Updated my X-T5 this week and absolutely has this problem not focusing in video. I have a second X-T5 on version 2.O and it does the same thing. The big shock? Dusting off my X-T4 and having its video AF work incredibly well and the AF steps are smooth.

I love my XT3s for photography. And for the price you pay nowadays I think it’s a relatively good value and personally I always stuck on firmware version 3 to shoot the occasional video. For this it absolutely is fine. Is it good autofocus. Absolutely not. But it is useable especially for a camera that is already so old. Is Sony, Canon, LUMIX and now Nikon better? Of course by a mile.

I've been thinking about selling my S5ll-X to buy the XH2-S mainly for video. I typically don't use autofocus, but sometimes I have a sports job, so I don't know. I love Fuji colors. Those colors are one of the best on the market (at least for me).

I cant believe they dont know about this before they release. This is a camera company that releases firmware with obscure fixes for all sorts of things all the time. The focus issue is not an "obscure" problem, it's obvious. So they know about it but dont know how to fix it and keep quiet. Which is pretty shocking really. Not because companies dont do this (they do this all the time). But because we see Fujifilm as pretty good technically. It's not a cheap camera company. So the fact they cant do this basic stuff in 2024 whereas every other camera company has nailed it (Panasonic, Canon, Sony and Nikon) makes you think the whole framework they have been building these camera firmwares on is flawed. And the only real fix is a completely rewritten firmware. Which will take years. But they cant say that. CAF tracking on any image is a fixed issue in the tech world. I'm sure there are opebn source C++ libraries all over the place that can do it. No one else has a big problem with it but Fujifilm. The funny thing is, when I tried a GH7 with my old as hell, 20mm f1.7 m43 lens, CAF was perfect! And that has one of the loudest and slowest motors around. So it's never been any lens that stops this working. It's always software. This is crazy from Fujifilm. You cant charge £2.5K for these cameras lol. Not for video work in 2024.
