The 110 was the first lens I bought for GFX. It totally blows my mind every time looking at the files. I came from x series, and was used to the 56, which I love but the 110 at 102mp is a site to behold when you catch the magic correctly. In the fuji promo video, one of the guys says it somehow captures the air, and I thought it was just marketing… but now I believe. Thanks for all the videos Dylan! Long time watcher.

Really appreciate the honesty (not that other reviewers aren't honest, but few give that "should I buy this" part). I have the GFX 50S II, a very recent purchase, my first so-called medium format (that term is getting a little loosy-goosy), with its very inexpensive (relative to camera) kit 35-70. It's a slow, slow lens. But hey, I have it. Now given the budget (or more accurately, the lack of), have to decide on a prime. I am going to try an adapter first, when I can find a lightly used Metabones one, to use my Zeiss Milvus 100 f/2 ZE (Canon EF mount). I know I'll get some vignetting, but for certain portraits that may be totally acceptable. If it's crap, then the 110mm -- instead of buying a car. It would be interesting to see a comparison (by you) of this with the newer FUJIFILM GF 80mm f/1.7
@DylanGoldbyPhotographer3 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael, Yes, budget is always a concern. I just keep comparing these prices with Schneider lenses for the Phase One cameras and I don't feel so bad when I come home with one. Ha! If I can get a hold of the 80mm f/1.7, I'd love to do a comparison. Chances are I won't be purchasing it myself as I have the 110mm, but once our COVID restrictions calm down here again, I hope that I can borrow it from my local Fujifilm office for a while to test. Stay tuned.

Thanks for watching. I've only had a little experience with the excellent 23mm. Hard to say anything about the others. It's also been years since I shot anything on a Nikon camera, especially with a lens as long as 135mm. Unfortunately, I can't offer you much on that front.

Stabled upon this now. Great as always. I happen to have both the 110 and the 80 (terminal GAS I know). Even with the 100s I do have a little trouble with both lenses (the 80 perhaps a bit worse, although I love the wider field of view for more environmental portraits) with doing an accurate eye focusing. I am sure in part is my old hands and technique……but would love if Fuji could improve its eye/face detection in both the X and GFX systems. Great work with your portraits!!
@DylanGoldbyPhotographer2 жыл бұрын
Lucky you! That 80mm is much more my style of focal length, but it wasn't around when I bought this lens. Hopefully sometime soon I'll be able to give it a proper test. I agree that Fujifilm could really use a boost in the eye AF department. For now, I mostly just use single point AF. I have a much higher hit rate with that.
@RedShiftedDollar Жыл бұрын
They need to rename eye AF to eyelash AF. It misses nearly 100% of the time because it picks up on the contrast of the eyelashes which are super easy targets and super easy to bring into super sharp focus. it doesn't have the intelligence to ignore the easy target and go for the circular iris/pupil or focus on the reflections within the eye. It does a good job detecting the eye, it just needs to go one layer deeper and detect these critical features within the eye.

Hi, for me the most important thing is what you mentioned at 6:40” for having 110mm. But despite of weight and size, do you think the new 80mm on my gf100s would provide the same feeling quality (at 6:40”)? Or because of better subject compression bokeh and not distortion for portraits on 80mm, having leaner motor for faster auto focusing, still you recommend 110mm? Thank you
@DylanGoldbyPhotographer Жыл бұрын
I have the 80mm, but haven't been able to work with it in this style yet. From the way that I have been working so far, I'd say that the 80mm doesn't really produce images this way. It doesn't flatter the subject in quite the same way because of the shorter focal length. Until I've spent more time working in this way, it's hard to say. What I would say now is that the 110mm is a lens I'll never part with.

Very beautiful images. Am too busy with my business to use the 110 much. But when I do, one would almost think I am a great photographer. The Fuji 50S and the 110 mean that I no longer miss my Pentax 67. Which I had between 1980 and 2015. Great, succinct review. But Hélas, watching it makes me think I have to get the 100S. Hey, man! Sorry, I only just saw this. Files are around 90-120MB a piece when using lossless compressed raw. Not too bad. No need to upgrade anything on your editing machine, I wouldn't say. I'm using a Ryzen 3700X with 32GB of RAM and have no issues at all in C1. My honest opinion in this is that the resolution of both of these cameras is overkill for most things. If you want it, you want it. But, as I said in my 100S review, very few people need it. I won't be even looking at the 50S II because it's a step backwards from this camera in terms of resolution and autofocus. It took a lot to get me to go from a 50R to the 100S and I don't see myself switching bodies until this one fails me. When speaking of prints, it's all about viewing distance. I've printed a billboard sized image from a 16MP X-T10 file (see that here: facebook.com/dylangoldbyphotographer/photos/384167908685700). If you focus on things like this, you'll never find what you're looking for. Hope that helps!

@@DylanGoldbyPhotographer Thanks - it was. I am moving to GFX as we speak. Nailing down the correct starting lenses is proving tricky as I can't quite replicate what I would use in other formats (2 identical bodies, WA fast zoom on one, 70-200 2.8 on the other) and I need to accept I won't be working the same way. Just to add extra confusion, my dealer has a BNIB 100 unit (a single one!) at the same price as the 100s. If the 50 had PDAF I would stick to that but CDAF just won't work for me, I'd never consider the 100 at the original price but at the same price as the 's' version it's an added consideration for the better EVF and a few other (minor) things.
