Thanks - Canon and Nikon need to update their lines for mirrorless - especially Nikon, with the [width] restrictions of the F mount. Who knows perhaps Sony might have a go ;-) Until then, the likes of Laowa and TTArtisan will continue with specialised and cheaper options.

3:13 clear for the photographically trained eye, the shot was taken with the camera (sensor plane) plumb/vertical and so it was either shot with shift, or a larger angle and had at least the foreground cropped. Of course, in this video it was the shift lens. For the viewers it would be nice to learn to recognise what's happening that shows how horizontal lines converge, where the horizon must be relative to the viewpoint and how this impacts perspective and consequently how you get this image. The way you explain it in words is perfect but people who don't know already what's going on visually here may fail to see the point.

Very true - however this particular video does assume a knowledge of the rudiments of using shift/tilt [if you were considering spending the price of the 110TS I'd hope so]. I have lots of articles and videos which cover things from scratch and the main review will cover. This is one reason I still prefer doing my written articles - I can fill them with links/references ;-)

Have you also noticed with your Fuji 110mm T/S that the tilt mechanism blocks from time to time? When I turn the wheel from one side to the other, depending on the position of the lens, it happens that I can no longer turn the wheel somewhere in the middle. Of course, all the locks are open. I then release it briefly and continue turning, then it works again. This happens sometimes every time I turn the wheel. In an other position of the lens, e.g. upside down, I can turn it flawlessly. I have already had mine replaced by the dealer, but the replaced one has exactly the same behaviour. The Fuji 30mm T/S does not have this behaviour.

Thank you very much. You keep saying these are essentially snapshots for you, but as the observer, these are the best T/S photos I've ever seen. If I ever decide to invest in a tilt-shift lens, I'll certainly be buying your book. Have you any idea how sharp the Arax T/S lenses are? (On a Pentax K-1 mk II fwiw.)

I don't think it would be something this lens could be used for, but the example of the cup reminded me how I sometimes wish I could tilt the plane of focus for multi person portraits. Basically, to be able to have more than one face in focus while not necessarily having them at the same distance from the camera. I don't think I've ever seen that, so I guess there's a good reason why it's not practical. Or is it?

It's actually very feasible with lens tilt. You can use tilt to capture a line of people, or the opposite way to isolate people/individuals in a group. Tilting the plane along an arbitrary axis gives even more flexibility in this. The only reason I've not included it in examples is that I'm just not much of a 'people photographer' ;-)

It's always amazed me how this technique isn't used more (or at all?) in cinematography. Pretty much every single film I've ever watched has scenes in it that would benefit from judicious use of tilt, particularly to isolate two people in a group who are having a dialogue.

There was an 'outbreak' of it a few years ago in several longer [UK] TV productions [sorry can't remember which] such that shouting 'tilt' when a particularly egregious example appeared, was an occasional household game... About a year or two after the Canon TS-E 50/90/135 came out IIRC. It takes real skill to use it in a way which doesn't quickly become 'today's favourite special effect' If Canon bring out a series of RF mount T/S lenses expect to start seeing it on TV a year or two later ;-)

Hi Keith, great video. Can you please tell me how the manual focus works in this lens? Is there a motor in it or is it completely mechanical? What do you think of the manual aspect? This is the only manual GF lens available and I am particularly interested in using a manual GF lens. I currently have the GF 110mm f2 lens. Any idea how the actual image quality and sharpness compare between these two lenses? Could I expect a slight reduction in image quality between the 110mm T/S and non T/S? Thankyou.

It's fully manual, as with every other tilt/shift lens I've tested to date [inc. the GF 30mm TS] I use fully manual lenses for much of my photography, so it seems just fine ;-) A very different lens to the f/2 one - aimed at different uses. So, what do you use the 110 at f/2 for? - the 110 TS starts at f/5.6 This lens has shift and tilt - again, different uses I've no other lens to compare it with though - given the price, I'd be surprised if the 110 TS wasn't a tad better - but two different usage areas. I'm currently writing up the full [written] review, which will have another video with it - but that's a week or two away

Thank you for this reply. Sorry to dig deeper but when you say it is fully manual do you mean the the glass elements inside are moved mechanically as you turn the focus ring, or is there a motor somewhere that translates your movement of the focus ring and moves the glass elements accordingly? I am using my 110mm f2 solely for still-life photography and do not need the f2 aperture at all. I only use from f8 upwards, so I gain no benefit from having a lens that can open up more. I tested the defraction on the f2 and I cannot stop down more than f14 without considerable defraction. Do you think the f5.6 TS will give me a smaller f-stop with great sharpness?@@KeithCooper

Yes - no motors whatsoever. The only 'automated' bit is the aperture Diffraction comes with basic optics - if you find f/14 the limit for your use with the 110/2 then it will be the same with the 110/5.6 The 110/5.6 TS goes down to f/32 since what is 'acceptable' in diffraction varies widely by usage scenario, especially once you add lens tilt to the mix

One last question. So, supposing that I would not stop down more than f14 on this new lens, and used it on f14 as I do with my 110mm f2 - given the TS feature would I be able to increase my DOF using the TS feature and gain considerably more DOF than with my 110mm f2 non-TS at f14? I am not shooting architecture, I am shooting only still life setups, but not Macro. At a distance of about 2 metres.@@KeithCooper

Is this 110mm lens completely mechanical and mechanical focus using gears instead of motors? Will it solve the focus drift problem of GF autofocus lenses wjen use for time captures?

Thanks for replying - my videos are always aimed at a much wider audience than the written stuff, and I've long avoided overly 'technical' lens reviews since I don't have the equipment [and multiple copies of lenses required] for reviews like those by lensrentals, which are what I consider 'proper' technical reviews ;-)

@@KeithCooperin the end: what is the real advantage of the hyper expensive and very slow 110 5.6 vs the Canon ts e lenses? Cornered Sharon? better / lower field future

I've not the Canon ones to test, but from my testing on a 5Ds, they [90 and 135] were exceedingly good, and should have the coverage. At 2.8/4 they might also be more useful in some respects . It needs someone with proper lens testing equipment to find how good the 110 is. I was testing the TS-E50 on my GFX yesterday and it is stunning, with only a tiny bit of vignetting at full diagonal shift on the GFX, very sharp, contrasty and a bit of easily correctable CA. If I wanted longer T/S I think I'd buy a used 90 and 135 for the cost of the 110mm TS ;-)
