Great review! I use to shoot 645 & 6x7 back in the days of film. When the digital age hit, Medium & large format cameras became for the very very rich Profession! I still own my 645, but haven't put a roll in it in 12 years! I loved to see this image quality you worked on. I wish I had one of these in my Kit, my A Camera! Images of this magnitude stands out in the crowd... even reprocessed into downsized jpeg images or other formats up against almost all FF cameras. However, it's still only for the few in a small market do to the costs. If I was a contract Landscape Pro, this would be in my hands most of the time. Cheers

Very good review. I use a Phase One IQ160, and moving up to one of the Phase One 100mp soon. If I was not already 50,000-Euro invested into Phase One, and was just now transitioning to Medium Format digital, I would go with the GFX100. My only reservation with the Fuji system, is the lack of leaf-shutter lens.

Hello Andrea, what a brilliant review, congratulations ! I decide to switch from Nikon to MF, mainly for landscape and architecture. I would be interrested with the GFX 100 II, that looks in some points much better than the GFX 100. Have you tryed it ? If so, what are your impressions / conclusions ? What are for you the best GF lenses for landscape (20-35 f/4, 55 f/1,7, 100-400 f/5,6 the new 500, and others), what do you advice ? Thank you.

Thanks so much for the comment, and I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Yeah, the first iteration of the GFX, even though it's a killer camera, having the same performance in a smaller and lighter body is a huge advantage. I love the GFX system, and the image quality is nothing short of amazing. I'm a zoom guy when it comes to lens choice for landscape and travel photography. I've had the opportunity to try almost all the GF lenses, and my current favorite setup is the 20-35mm f/4, paired with the 32-64mm f/4 and the 100-200mm f/5.6. I also really enjoy the 35-70mm f/4.5-5.6 as a lighter and more affordable alternative. The image quality remains excellent with this lens as well. I haven't had the chance to try the new 500mm yet, but that lens seems to be incredible. I hope this helps 🙂

Thanks for this very informative review, Andrea. Are you considering moving up to this Fuji GFX100 MF system? I wonder how you feel about the shallower depth of field and the need to stack more photos in Post in landscape work, when you need extreme DOF. I keep coming back to thinking FF is the sweet spot for great resolution and DR, and better lens speeds, but still manageably deep DOF in landscape work before diffraction hurts image quality. APSC is more forgiving for deep DOF (at same angle of view), but FF has a full stop better DR and perhaps better lenses. Curious to hear how you analyze and contrast the format options. Maybe Fuji will offer a wide tilt lens for the GFX system, but that would heavy and expensive.
@AndreaLivieriPhoto
@AndreaLivieriPhoto 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert, thanks for your comment. I’m really glad you enjoyed the video. You’re right, the GFX100 forces the photographer to be more concerned about the depth of field, and sometimes is more challenging to make the job on the filed. If needed, I usually blend no more than 2 or 3 images to have and completely tack sharp image, and the process is absolutely straightforward in Photoshop. Nothing too complicated. At the moment I’ll stuck with the APS-C sensors cameras (X-T3 / X-T30) for the majority of my works because the wonderful image quality, the extreme depth of field with the wide-angle lens, and to be totally honest I’m really happy with the lenses quality. Morover it’s most important to me the portability, the ergonomics, the dimensions of the body and lenses, so the entire system is extremely lightweight which is a huge plus in the mountains for long hikes (where I shot the most). For example, last April I had with me the GFX medium format system in the Faroe Islands, GFX50R (an amazing camera at half the weight of the GFX100) with three lenses (23mm, 32-64mm, 100-200mm) + filters, drone, etc… and on occasion, I struggled a little bit with the weight of my backpack. In my opinion, less weight makes the entire photographic experience more enjoyable. Anyway, if you need to make huge prints at the native resolution, the GFX100 is a beast, the image quality is absolutely unbelievable! Otherwise the resolution you can get from a Pro FF/APS-C DSLRs is more than enough. All the best

Personally, I've decided never ever again to purchase a camera that does not have back-lit buttons, no matter HOW good the camera is. A camera needs to be usable at all times of day or night outside. If this was not a primary concern of the OEM, why else would a camera be overtly advertised as "water resistant" or "weather sealed"?! I'm pretty sure it's not about the leaking pipes in the studio, right? And why would a camera have to be so good in low light conditions, if shooting in the twilight was such a rare occurance? An OEM that wants to save 80 cents by NOT giving me the essential feature of back-lit buttons on a camera built to use outdoors is not worthy of my money. Period. If a lot of consumers start emphasizing this in their decision making process, the OEMs will all be forced to give us this feature on each weather sealed camera. Also, youtubers need to focus on this primary usability feature issue in their reviews much more. The fact that it is not even mentioned in >90% of the camera reviews does not reflect well on the true depth of these reviews. Don't reviewers have a set of criteria or a list of the issues they want to cover in each review? Why not add back-lit buttons to each review? Battery life and grip perfection seem to be a standard review criteria, so why not backlighting of buttons? If a car has primary function buttons (i.e. the main light switch, the emergency light, air-con, etc.) that are not back-lit, the car can become almost unsable at night. So why would a camera OEM decide to sell us a 10'000$ piece of equipment for use in the unlighted outdoors, if the main user interface (the buttons) are not back-lit? There - I said my piece. If it weren't for this major gaffe, the Fujifilm GFX 100 would be high on my short list. However, with an unusable night-time user interface, it dropped onto my lengthy sh.. list. Thankfully SOME OEMs are starting to understand how cameras are really used by us plebs and are including back-lit buttons!
