I received mine about a week ago. So far, I absolutely love this camera. I was blown away by the dynamic range. Your explanation for the DR modes was insightful. I shoot at least 50% video. So this is the first medium format camera that has been in my radar. I was originally planning on entering with the Hasselblad X2D, but Hasselblad decided to snub hybrid shooters… their loss. Having better video features requires much improved stills features… so everyone benefits. The sales of the Fujifilm speaks volumes as to how it’s been received. It sits in the #1 spot on BHPhoto as I write this. The flexibility in both stills and particularly video are truly groundbreaking. It even transports painlessly, by removing the EVF. I’m honestly not surprised to learn you enjoyed using it. I’m looking forward to the upcoming video lens. PS: If you have them, I’d love to hear your opinion on the 63mm and 80mm for video. I purchased the 50mm and 55mm, but feel they are too close in focal length to justify both.
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI Жыл бұрын
I didn't love the 80mm because of the focus for video, but haven't looked at the 63mm yet. Quality video AF is something that is still a work in progress, but they are moving in the right direction.

Fuji did a great job on this new model, they've reduced the amount of medium format limitations (shooting speed, focusing speed etc.) and enclosed it in an almost perfect ergonomic package. The sensor performance is just breathtaking in all aspects. Great review as always Mr. Abbott, thank you.

The GFX 100 actually also titled the top plate slightly back. Just slightly. Interesting how Fuji is not just following conventional designs and making some small steps on the ergonomic front.

@@DustinAbbottTWI having used the 100 and the 100 II do you think that the tilt significantly improves readability between the two? I'd agree though - on the original 100 I couldn't tell there was a tilt until I had it in hand. But it helps, even if slightly.

You mentioned the question, “is this medium format camera updated enough to entice full frame users to switch?” Well, it did for me, I sold my entire Canon R5 kit and bought it. For a while I’ve been considering medium format, but it wasn’t until video features reached actual usability with 12 bit raw output and decent af, stills fps reached 8, stills af got good, and the gf 500mm lens was announced that I actually committed to switch :)

I could see this being a very interesting compact video setup for commercial work. You can now adapt ARRI lenses and the like making it a fantastic bcam to get shots that would be difficult to get with a cinema camera. For that kind of work autofocus doesn’t matter at all either. For commercials and low budget productions this could be a game changer. The one thing I don’t get is if that is the target market they need a viewfinder cable and cage mount of some sort.
@DustinAbbottTWI

You're right that serious cinematographers are rarely relying on AF anyway. In this case, unless you are shooting with a GF lens you aren't really getting AF anyway.

I had the opportunity to try out the camera at a recently concluded photographic fair. It felt good in the hands and I have small hands. As expected the sensor is impressive & there was significant discount making the price closer to the sony a7r5. For me the sony a7r5 still is the best high resolution compact hybrid because of its range of lenses, better AF etc but the Fuji has really drawn out the potential of the medium format and making it more accessible. They have offered the possibility of trying it out too so it is very tempting to eventually supplement the a7r5.

I didn’t directly compare the two (didn’t have them both at the same time), but Fuji states there are some improvements. I wouldn’t say sensor improvements would be the primary reason to upgrade, however. It’s better, but not by much. There are stronger improvements in other areas.

Hi, Dustin, you need to correct the AF. You are using the 55 1.7, which is very slow at AF. Understandably, to get a lens that fast at 1.7 in Mf is a technical masterpiece, but to test its af speed, use the 45-100 mm, and you will see a vast difference. It's all lens-related when it comes to AF speed in Meduiam format. Cheers.
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 10 ай бұрын
With all due respect, I've reviewed quite a number of medium format lenses at this point, so I'm pretty familiar with the average focus speed...which unfortunately still lags behind smaller format sensors by a good bit. It is getting better, but has a long way to go. Also, it was Fuji that chose to send me that combination.

Thanks, this is a really comprehensive review that touches on the technical aspects as well as the user experience. Appreciate it. I’d say based on your review coming from a full frame Sony camera to this camera, I would loose the responsiveness, accuracy and speed of the AF while gaining sublime imaging capabilities beyond full frame sensors. I tried the GFX100S and was frustrated at the overall responsiveness compared to my X-H2S. I have the X-H2S and love it, especially for its colors. Its stacked sensor at this price is a plus too. To me moving from a Sony FE/Fujifilm X system to a GFX/X system might still not be in the cards as yet.

Hi Dustin, great video as usual, I´m on the fence for a 100s or the 100II, I do documental (not fast-moving people), portrait (not in studio) and landscape photography, I m curious about the autofocus (eye af) of the S model compared to the II model and since I have Sony a7r III, how does the eye af performs in low light? - if the autofocus of the S is on pair with the sony A7R 2 than the S will be a pain for me.

How good are AF in cameras these days? a7r4, a7r5, gfx100s, gfx100 II. If I'm photographing wide variety of mostly still objects, can I expect AF to be very accurate even if it's not super fast? Sometimes when I shoot pictures with my a5100 (even if I use a custom focus point), the AF just doesn't focus correctly even if nothing is moving and even after multiple tries. With GFX100 and the II, if using eye AF can I be very confident that a still subject will have AF nailed?

I just switched from Sony to this camera. I value image quality over pretty much everything else but the older GFX cameras have always felt a little too slow. This one however is finally fast enough for me to make the switch. For what I do it more or less feels exactly like my A7RV but it is heavily lens dependent. The 20-35 and 50 f3.5 feel snappy and to my eyes are just as fast focusing as any Sony lens the 80mm however is really bad.

@LoganNolag
@LoganNolag Жыл бұрын
I haven't used it a huge amount yet since I only got the GFX a few days ago but my initial thoughts are that It is defiantly a pretty big improvement over the A7RV in terms of image quality. 102 megapixels is really great and noise is essentially a non issue while on the A7RV there is still some in some circumstances. I've taken some shots at 12800 on the GFX and while there is noise it isn't really distracting at all it just looks like film grain due to how fine it is. Also I find that the images coming out of the GFX barely need any post processing especially with the film simulations which are really nice. Just pick the simulation you like and it basically does the editing for you. It even works with RAW files of course you can just change them after the fact to whatever simulation you like in Lightroom. The RAW files seem to open no problem in Lightroom Classic despite not being listed as compatible yet but not all of the film simulations show up. Overall I would say that the A7RV is still a lot more responsive and the autofocus is still better but the GFX is very good. I would say that the overall responsiveness of the camera (menus, changing settings, etc) is closer to the A7RV than to my previous A7RIII but the autofocus is somewhere in between the A7RIII and the A7RV depending on the lens of course. @@boristahmasian9604
@LoganNolag
@LoganNolag Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately not. I had to sell most of my Sony kit to fund the switch but so far I'm pretty happy. I think if you do any sort of sports/wildlife/journalistic stuff it might be better to stick with Sony although the A7RV isn't the best for those subjects either. I think if you are happy with the A7RV you would probably be happy with the GFX however if you have an A1 and actually use the high speed I think the GFX100II will feel like a downgrade in a lot of ways other than image quality of course. Also there are no long lenses for GFX other than the 250mm which isn't really all that long on medium format.@@Mattrossphoto

@@LoganNolag Thank you for your reply and insights. I came to A7RIV from a Pentax K1. Noise wise Pentax had a nice clean images up to 800 or so. My A7RIV is already pretty noisy at ISO 400. The reason I know is when I use Photoshop's denoise, the improvements are dramatic. I can even see better noise at ISO 100 after PS denoise. I imagine the GFX is my K1 with tons more resolution. It is a winner for sure. I was able to enter the A7RIV world with four excellent Tamron lenses for less than $7K. I imaging the same with GFX will bring me close to $17K.

When I wanted to try the medium format, Fujifilm was not really helpful at that time to help me to find a place where I could test the GFX 100S. Now a new camera, how can I just buy a completely different set (camera, lenses) spending lot of money just watching review in internet? Should this camera be compared to FF cameras such as Song? Or rather compare it to other MF cameras and we’ll find it blows them out the water when you look at pound 4 pound quality.

I tend to do the full frame comparisons because 1) that's what Fuji seems to target in their marketing and 2) I don't have a lot of experience with other medium format system.

And that's a really huge indictment, as I feel like this is a relatively easy area to address (everyone else has done it!) and such a crazy thing to keep buyers like yourself away from an otherwise amazing camera like this.

Whether $10,000, $7,500 or even $5,000... who do big camera manufacturers think is their mass market? Honestly, Hasselblad, Leica and others seem to be pushing niche/high-end products like mass-market, consumer products! (I recall buying a Nikon F4s for $2000 and it was deemed pro only and niche. Now most manufacturers are marketing $5000-$10000 products like customers have unlimited funds).

In fairness if you take the $2000 in 1988 money and just adjust for inflation and not at all for increase in features that would be $5190 in todays money.

You are right. I get @gregoryfricker9971's point. Yes we have to adjust for inflation but even then the prices are out of reach for most people. That is why I went with the Sony A7RIV instead of the Fuji GFX. You also have to consider the lens prices. Fuji has almost no alternatives. Whereas Sony has Tamron, Sigma and a bunch of their lenses available for the platform. I still want the GFX but have to save up a lot more for it!! Fuji and Hassy were workhorses and status symbols at some point. However, in today's photography world, they are more status symbol. Don't get me wrong, they are great cameras but we have equally good cameras for a lot less $$$.

I doubt they are expecting MF to be mass market yet, but Fuji's approach is definitely more affordable that medium format systems from the past. I don't know that you can expect a lot more drop in terms of price.

@@DustinAbbottTWI no expectation of any price drop. And I understand inflation. I was a marketing/ad manager in GM. If I advertised a $50k luxury car in Bass Fisherman Monthly I'd be fired! This is not about price..... it's about your demographic.

It's not designed for photographers to make the jump from 35mm (fullframe) digital, it's designed for those using APS-C (X system) to skip fullframe and use cropped medium format.

Well, it's good to know the focus has gotten better, and that image quality IS incredible... but I have to say, that is the _ugliest_ camera I have ever seen. The texture, the flat/smooth parts not _quite_ matching the colour or at least reflectiveness of the textured parts, the angles of that top plate, viewfinder and grip, the clumsy movie/stills button (will anyone who cares enough about video to pay 7K+ not just buy an actual dedicated video camera?)... absolutely hideous. And what's with Fuji's insistance on putting Q buttons on the tip of the thumb grip? Their managers have acknowledged the complaints about that in interviews since the X-T30. Evidently it functions well enough, but this is the first time I think Fuji have totally dropped the ball on design. I'll wait for these innards to be put in an 'S' or 'R' body; I'm not paying £7000 for something I don't want to look at.

I agree with you. I actually wrote to Fuji with some suggestions for products, and I mentioned the awful, ugly, simplistic design of the new 50sii/100s. The GFX50R had some potential, although not exceptional at all. It's viewfinder was v interesting technology that could be evolved too. The build quality is also suspicious to me. I have seen the reports of failing tripod mounts and baseplate design. Fuji could really do with hiring some better designers. It's another rectangular box with a grip attached and the weird slope may be functional but it's an afterthought in the design.
