The aperture ring is/was a primary reason I left Sony and went to the Fujifilm GFX line of gear... I grew up shooting with an aperture ring and I really like being able to use both hands to control the camera (and not leave all the functions up to one hand). For years, I used a bunch of adapted Leica lenses on the old Sony A bodies (of course, with aperture rings), but with the introduction of the FE lenses, I felt it was best to go with the native glass for a bunch of reasons... and I was forced to leave the aperture ring behind. While the apreture ring wasn't the only reason I left Sony behind, I think it was the final feature that seled the deal for me. I'm nit using the X series yet as I have been holding out until the new sensors become available (and it has been a long time coming!). Next year, I have a full kit with both GFX and X bodies going.

@magiccarpetrider4594 Жыл бұрын
I plan to use adapted Zeiss ZE lenses. How does this compare to the canon R5 or Leica SL2 in terms of sharpness and color rendering? Anyone?
@Ni5ei3 жыл бұрын
Can anyone explain what the deal with medium format is in this digital age? In the analog days medium format allowed you to print larger pictures (or crop) while maintaining sharpness because it used a physically larger film format. But nowadays camera manufacturers can decide how many pixels they want to put on any given sensor. Take Sony for instance: The A7RIV has the same physical size (full frame) sensor as the A7SIII, yet the former has 61MP while the latter only has 12.1MP So the only difference I see is the focal length you're using to get the framing you want. Which means medium format gives you less depth of field than full frame. I know this sometimes is desired but not always and you have to use larger f numbers with medium format (and thus longer shutter times) to get the same depth of field as full frame. Perhaps I'm missing something but personally I don't see myself buying a medium format digital camera...
@Horrrrrrrrst3 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. The thing is, you don't even always get shallower depth of field with medium format. Take for example the widest open lens I was able to quickly find, the GF 80mm F1.7. That is equivalent to full frame 63mm F1.3 due to the 0.79 crop factor. Now, I don't think there are any full frame 63mm lenses, but there are Sony and canon lenses with 50mm F1.2 or 85mm F1.4. So in terms of aperture, the full frame systems are definitely competitive in shallowness and total light gathering ability. And the GF 80mm is an exception anyway. Most GF lenses are F2.0 or F2.8 at most, which would translate to F1.6 and F2.2 full frame equivalent, which is definitely matched by professional full frame lenses. About the last part of your comment, you don't actually have to use longer shutter times with medium format if you your lenses match the full frame equivalent. Remember that at the same ISO, shutter time and aperture, the medium format will have less noise because the larger sensor will gather more light (1/0.79)² times more. Example: If you have a full frame camera with ISO 400 F1.6 1/400s your medium format camera with F2.0 1/400s setting could set ISO to ISO 640 and get the same exposure, depth of field, and noise, given that it's focal length times crop factor also matches the full frame lens

A big thing with film/sensor size is compression to fov is different. This allows for more compression of your shot with a wider fov, like how the 35-70 kit lens has the compression of a 35-70mm lens, but the fov of a 28-55mm. This can be beneficial in a lot of shooting applications, like fashion, landscapes, etc. The biggest problem with current MF digi (which you didn't touch on), is the fact that they're not true medium format yet (aside from the 50k phase one systems).
@Ni5ei3 жыл бұрын
@Forty Thanks for taking the time to write such an extensive reply. I appreciate it. I wasn't aware of some of the technical details you're pointing out. But still, I think you'll have to be working as a professional photographer to invest into cameras like these. Less choice in lenses to use, higher prices. Ah well, it's always been like that when shooting on medium format. So basically nothing's changed 😎
@Ni5ei3 жыл бұрын
@@maxfreedman5786 I was't even aware that current MF is still not up to analog MF physical size. Will read up on it. Thanks!
@maxfreedman57863 жыл бұрын
@@Ni5ei Yeah it's due to the way sensors are manufactured, and how sony (who makes the sensors) is cheap. Basically a wafer of sensor material is made, and sensors are cut off of it in the shape of the sensor. Due to the way they're made, you have parts of the wafer that aren't within spec, meaning you can't use them. So from a financial perspective, if you can get 1000 aps c sensors, but only like 100 MF sensors, you're not gonna wanna make as many MF sensors. This is why "MF" digital is only 44x33mm usually. I mostly still shoot with a hasselblad 500c and scan using a nikon coolscan, but this new gfx may just get me to swap over.

@williamaungleyraud3 жыл бұрын
That depends on your needs, for example if you need WR then yes. I don't think those who absolutely adore their 35mm f1.4 will or should replace it, but adding this 33mm can fit the gap in the scenarios where the 35mm struggles. And for those who don't have the 35mm at all the 33mm is a nice way to start with the updated lenses 😎👍

Fujifilm lenses are too close to full frame pricing and very often more expensive than third party full frame options. I like the design of their cameras but if I'm paying full frame pricing them I'll just buy full frame gear. Also they still haven't stopped using X-Trans.
@maxfreedman57863 жыл бұрын
I think the gfx50sii doesn't use x trans (thank god for lightroom use)
@williamaungleyraud3 жыл бұрын
In that case Fuji isn't for you. Nothing wrong with that. There are just too many people complaining about Fuji native lenses prices yet pay Sony natives lenses prices which tend to double comparing to Fuji. 🤔 And there are more third party lens makers coming over to Fuji by the day, so soon enough third party options will be nearly as competitive in terms of numbers. Also, people love to brag on specs and prices, and although these have their own importance, people choose to go with Fuji for the reasons they don't choose to go with Sony or Canon. To those who don't know why they would choose a camera over another it just mean that a certain camera isn't for them. 🤷
@TechnoBabble3 жыл бұрын
@@williamaungleyraud "Double". Care to give examples that aren't cherry picked older Zeiss lenses? Cause I have a feeling you're not taking sensor size into account. The Sony 50mm f/1.8 gathers more light on FF than a 33mm f/1.4 on APS-C and only costs $250-300, 1/3 the price of the Fuji lens, while still being quite sharp wide open. Same goes for the Sony 85mm f/1.8 compared to ANY of the Fuji 50-56mm options. Also remember that Fuji f/2.8 zooms need to be compared to f/4 zooms on full frame if you're talking about getting the same results.
@jon47153 жыл бұрын
@@TechnoBabble Why are you penalizing Fuji lenses by a stop? 1.4 is 1.4, 2.8 is 2.8. Are you talking about depth of field? The Fuji lenses are fast, an f/1.4 Fuji lens is still just as fast as an f/1.4 Sony FE lens (not withstanding any minor variation in transmission loss).
@williamaungleyraud3 жыл бұрын
@@TechnoBabble when fanboys behave as fanboys 🤦 you are exactly the type of people I'm talking about. There you go comparing your third-party lens to Fuji native 🙈🙉🙊 Sony G master lenses start at $1399 now compare this: Sony fe 35mm f1.4 GM $1398. 00 on Amazon and Fujinon 23mm f1. 4 WR LM $899.95. If you want to compare third-party lenses at least be fair and compare to third-party lenses like the Viltrox 56mm f1.4 is just $329.00. And please get educated a f1.4 lens continues to be f1.4 no matter if you're shooting with full frame or aps-c, comparing sensor sizes has nothing to do with the actual lenses, the fact is the faster aperture lens you have the better it will perform in low light for both full frame and aps-c. Now if you will compare camera bodies this is a whole different conversation. The Op stated the buying Fuji isn't worth because Fuji lenses cost just as much as full frame lenses, and that's where I posted my constructive stand, not a fanboy opinion. And again what matter in the end of the day is the photographer behind the camera, no matter how much money you spend, or how bigger sensor size you got, it alone won't make you a better photographer. Experience, composition, light and style is what makes photographs outstanding and breathtaking. Now let's hope no more fanboys will come here to compare full frame third-party lenses to Fuji native lenses 🤔

I still feel they're missing a trick by not treating full frame the way that full frame manufacturers have treated APS-C. Make a "GCX-40" that just uses an existing 40MP full frame sensor as the "crop" version of their medium format, reusing as much of the existing R&D and manufacturing infrastructure from the GFX line as possible, and then price it somewhere between the X-series and the medium format beasts. Add in a few entry-level G-mount lenses compatible with both sensor sizes and you'd have a gateway into the system that could absolutely drive sales for the medium format bodies in exactly the same way that Canon or Sony's APS-C bodies have done for their full frame flagships.
@makasii3 жыл бұрын
too expensive logisitic for an oversaturated (by Sony and Canon) and strongly declining market - you'd need new production lines, new R&D for lenses, marketing, etc...). Their move is very smart (Look at Nikon, they are just skydiving... but their full frame parachutes doesn't slow down the fall... really sad for them, they used to be impressive). rather develop the Medium, and improve the resolution of the APS-C (we'll surely have pleasant surprises with the new sensor next year) :)

The small cropped 44x33mm is essentially full frame, the horizontal crop factor is only 1.2 - which makes it identical to full frame for all intents and purposes. Some (esp. X users) think that even the APS-C-to-FF crop factor of 1.5 would be rather small, but then, 1.2 is really negligible. The body is merely a bait, but the monopoly-overpriced lenses are the locked-in penalty. For a user, this would be a risky investment decision, now that the new Fuji CEO had revealed, that their camera department is not really any important any more to Fuji's company strategy. What we see is only the aftermath of some projects already been started under the reign of the previous CEO, who loved cameras.
@DriveCancelDC3 жыл бұрын
"horizontal crop factor only 1.2" this just sounds like a weird way for someone who wants full frame but can't get it for whatever reason to make themselves feel better. Difference between FF and APS-C is 0.5-0.6x, end of.
@tubularificationed3 жыл бұрын
@@DriveCancelDC No, the horizontal crop factor is 44mm / 36 mm = 1.2 which is negligible for all intents and purposes. This is essentially the same sensor format. Given that, the "wanna-be medium-format" lenses are way too overpriced, or way too slow for their money. This is where you get really ripped off. Also, if you need best bokeh or most clean low-light images, FF appears to be the (far) superior choice due to the good fast lenses choice (mainstream AF primes from F/1.2 for multiple focal lengths, mainstreams zooms from f/2.8) (not talking about F/2.0 zooms like Sigma's 24-35mm, or those T/2.0 cine zooms).
@tubularificationed2 жыл бұрын
I think these times are over. It is too late for digital affordable (but real) medium format to emerge (6x4.5 cm, 6x6 cm, 6xWhatever). There's simply no application for that any longer. Full frame (in particular full frame lenses as well) has become so good by now, and on top of that there's AI software noise removal and resolution quadrupling (from e.g. 60 MP to 240 MP), which is just the beginning of software developments to come (AI is still in its infancy). Sure, if there came a "bigger 6x6 boy" along, then its measurable results would start to reach a little beyond being negligible, but the tangible net BENEFIT yielded to any application, that will be more negligible than ever before in the entire medium format (or larger format) history. Unrelated to that, there's a trend for downsizing gear, which can be observed in how top-of-the-line FF lenses, which are getting smaller and smaller now from generation to generation, to serve this market demand. So being a "bigger" boy would a problem in its own right by now 😉

I've been a long time viewer like many drtv fans. I know it has been great seeing Kai and Lok together again. However, I wanted to express some criticism about the direction they are going. Lok is beginning sound more like Kai, ie his increase in sillyness. At the same time, Kai is sounding more like Lok, ie. He is trying to be more serious. What ends up happening, there is a lot less contrast between the two. In their younger days, the contrast between their personalities was their asset. Kai pushed Lok to be more creative. And Lok made sure Kai stays grounded. In their more recent videos, Lok and Kai spend most of the time agreeing with each other. This is made worse when these two need to navigate two different channels that are so similar with overlapping content. it was difficult to watch both videos on the rc car pov, wireless video receiver video. I think more contrast in the onscreen personalities is needed for their channels to grow. And maybe some way to distinguish the two channels.
