One thing I forgot to mention in the video is about the RAW vs JPEG - In Light room the only difference I noticed between Raw and JPEG was an exposure shift - no difference in colors - So maybe some Sim information does transfer over to the RAW now in 2024 .... BUT im a film dude ... I don't know digital stuff lol hope this helps clarify my findings

Was it AFTER you changed Adobe profile to Reala? (if not - stop reading) In that case a number of under-the-hood changes were applied similar to 'presets' - the difference only in collaboration efforts between Adobe and Fuji.

If you select lil drop down that says Adobe Color above the basic correction panel in LR and then select the film emulation you want, that should be a good starting point. What’s displayed in camera is a preview (look isn’t baked in) and what’s uploaded into Lightroom is the raw file so you still have to select the film emulation 🫠

I'm a Fuji X shooter. The JPEGS, and getting it right in camera, is where it's at. For me the RAW is a fallback for when exposure or white balance was off. Your raws need to have the Fuji film sim applied after you've imported the image into lightroom and in my opinion the raws don't output the exact same even with the profile applied. Specifically, there is so much flexibility to change the jpeg output in camera on Fuji compared to any other system. I would never claim its a substitute for the real thing, but I do feel like it's a half-step between digital and film. Anyways, fun episode and comparison.

You did an amazing job with the film simulations. It makes me want to shoot more digital masquerading as film... As horrible as that sounds. I think the details of post work color correcting the digital to match the film is interesting. Many people will say "It was edited", but so are film scans. Everybody ignores that even scans from a developing company are color balanced. We just don't like going down that thought path too far because then we realize all our obsession about "Tonez" is mostly fabricated.

Loved this comparison! I thought these films were gone forever and never thought this comparison was possible! One thing I'm still curious, is that in my experience with fuji cameras and film simulations is that the .jpgs are the real juice! Usually they work better with +2/3 or +1 stops over. RAW files don't bake-in the simulation goodness, only the white balance. Would be nice to know if this makes any difference, but that one for another video! Still very insightful :)

ok soooooo im new at this... I don't take my word as gospel As far as I could tell in 2024 the Raw images are close to the JPEG ALSO.... There is a Reala Profile in Light room When comparing the JPEG vs RAW in light room all I had to do was apply that Reala Profile and the Raw Snapped into the same look at the JPEG ..... overall the thing I noticed the most was not color but exposure ... so it just up the exposure then I could go from there.... I think the Raw's used to not hold color info from the Sim but maybe now they do ... I equate the exposure difference bewtween the JPEG and Raw to be the same as if you shoot with say a drone and save both JPEG and DNG ... there is only an exposure difference because of the extra information stored BUT IDK hope this helped

to get the fuji film simulation right out of the camera you need to shoot in fine+raw to get the jpg or else raw is just raw

Nooooo, not Caleb doing the 'Film Photographer tries Fujifilm digital camera' -> 'Former Film Photographer now only uses Fujifilm digital camera until viewership drops' pipeline Reala Ace looks really sweet. Sure would like it if Fujifilm brought back Fuji...films. I wonder if there are any 65/70mm reels of the 500D good stuff out there. Loading some in bulk for use in medium format cameras sure sounds like a fun (albeit expensive time)
@BadFlashes3 ай бұрын
hahahah I mean that wasn't the premise ... there was only one way to see if the new sim looked the same as sexy film lol but yeah REALA is sick AF and im not sure if there is any 65 bulk

I don't understand how the Fujifilm simulations work. I thought it only applied it to the JPEG, not the raw files? I have been thinking about one of these cameras and looking into it, but I thought it required you to shoot JPEGs. So, I'm confused by the video here when he is talking about how the raw files don't look like film. I didn't expect the film simulation to be applied to the raw file. Am I dumb? Can anyone clarify?
@stevelongphoto3 ай бұрын
You are correct, the simulations only apply to the jpegs, the raw files are just that, raw.

As shown at 11:06, Caleb edited the specific image with "Adobe color" profile. AFAIK if I want to edit the raw but from the simulation results I would choose profiles from "camera matching". I am not sure if Caleb did try to start editing from that but he did bring those raw close to the film scans.

Im generally confused tooo but check out my comment on @idknothing7893 comment on this video ... that's something else I noticed between the RAW and the JPEG

How do you actually create a valid comparison when every film lab / scanner creates different results? I’m really asking this myself because this stuff keeps me up at night 😅

I mean that's kinda what I pose at the end of this video ... it's hard to do so sometimes ... at the end of the day I try to kill as many variables and I can and then go from there

Your raw files from the fuji are not automatically applying the film simulation when you open it in Lightroom, it kind of defaults to regular raw, only the jpegs have the simulation, or I think you can choose the reala simulation in profiles in Lightroom with the raw file. So its not that weird that your raw files looked neutral and like any other raw file, because they are 😅 kind of annoying tho, wish it just added it to the raw automatically too.
