Your videos inspired me to sell my 33 1.4 and get the 35 1.4 instead. This lens is so much more compact and light weight, and when shooting wide open for its intended purpose (predominantly portraiture) it is plenty sharp in the center where it matters (even on the new 40MP sensor). On my X-T5 the AF also works pretty good, and there is hardly a noticeable difference from the LM version. The rendering characteristics are also sublime; the double gauss design and fewer optical elements remind me of the older EF 50 1.2L, one of my favorite Canon lenses from the DSLR era (albeit this is much sharper). I love this lens so much that I just bought a used 18 f2 as it seems to have a similar combination of character and usability. Love your videos by the way!

I love this lens as well; I believe it is to do with the lens having 8 elements in 6 groups. I don't know the technical magic behind 8 elements but Leica's infamous 35mm 2.0 first gen has 8 elements in 6 groups as well and is often regarded as one of the best M mount lenses of all time.

Came across this while researching this lens, fantastic video and you bring up some really solid points. Been shooting since 2007, and I can't believe how much focus now is on having instant autofocus systems and forgetting about the rest of how we shoot. I remember having a Nikon D200 with a Sigma 150-500 5-6.3 and learning how to use the lens to nail great action shots. None of us dreamed of having autofocus systems as quick as they are today.

I like the look and feel of pictures taken with 35mm f/1.4 and 18mm f/2, they're very lievly and volumetric. The lens itself also looks and feels very cool in hands. Now I want to try even more flavored Voigtlander 35mm f/1.2 lens. Another lens that I also really like for its combination of quality and character is the GF 80mm f/1.7 - the softness of the transitions with high resolution and slight CA give a very interesting feel to the photos.

I picked this lense up dirt cheap with a X-E1 at the swapmeet a few years back. Didn't know much about photography back then, but there was something magical about this lense. No idea there was a huge following. Bought a X-Pro3 with a few F2s. Almost made a huge mistake selling the 35 f1.4. Ended up selling all the F2s, no regrets!

Loved this interview, had me singing for joy from the heart as you discussed our everything these days have moved away from character towards metrics and features that no one will ever redeem. I certainly don’t think of going out with my camera on a rainy day. The facts are, the size difference between the f1.4 and f2 is solely the hood! I bought the 16mm f1.4 to pair with my much beloved 35mm f1.4 as sometimes I just see a while scene and want to go wide. Aside from those instance the 35mm fits my needs perfectly!

Totally agree about the AF, I used to do prom parties with a 5dmk2 and an old super slow tamron zoom lens as I couldn't afford anything better at that time, and these were one of the best photos I took in my whole career, by just being patience, creative and by knowing the capability of your camera you can do anything, you do not need super sharp blazing fast lenses for 10000 of coin. Great review! :)

Just came across this video. After I sold all my Canon stuff a couple of years ago, I scratched the digital photography/proper camera itch with an X100V last year. This then led me to buying an X-T1 as I wanted something to adapt my Minolta MC/MD lenses to and heard/seen good things about the X-Trans II. The 35mm f1.4 is the perfect addition to that setup. Similar results as the vintage lenses but the convenience of AF. Love it.

I'm glad that I reach your video taking about 35mm 1.4. I totally agree with you. People seek for more features but they somewhat forget the main feature is photography itself. I am still using my XT-20 bought in 2018 and now in 2022 with my kit 18-55 lens. XT-20 has a "slow auto-focus" in 2018, but still, I got no issue with my photography. No one back in the days using film cameras could ever imagine how fast auto-focus can be, fast to a point we lose the patience of taking a stunning photo. I am finding a good prime lens for street photography and portraits photo. This 35mm f1.4 was a lens published ten years ago with the bad autofocus speed makes me struggle that should I still get a new 35mm 1.4. But then when I compare the weight and size of 33mm 1.4 and rumours of 35mm 1.4 mark ii, I guess no other lens can indeed replace the compactness with no comprise in image quality at the current price point in 2022. There is always a new technology, get a good video camera with an external mic, and let the great lens do the great photo. Greetings from Hong Kong.

They updated the aperture ring, it used to be much more slack. I bought the original version with an X-Pro1 back in 2012, and it's very easy to bump out of place. It's never really been an issue for me, but it's definitely a thing on the early models. Newer versions are much more stiff. I don't know when they changed it, but if you buy the lens new nowadays you don't have to worry about it.

Happy to found your video! I just bought a Fuji XT30 II with and 18mm F2 and 35mm F1.4 A lot of youtubers just talk about AF and „micro“ sharpness… Coming from an 80D, I think this combo will be a lot better and especially lighter. Love to shoot on an 18-35mm f1.8 (sigma) so this lens combo will be perfect. Better a slower and accurate AF than a fast but often out of focus pic like on the 80d😅 You are the only one who speaks about character which would be the „best thing“ from a lens. Thanks for this video, I follow you for more💪🏼🤝🏻😇

Just one more data point... I put off getting this lens because of all of the negative comments about the focus speed. I finally gave in and bought it and was expecting the worst. I needn't have worried, the lens is more than fast enough for my type (and no doubt, most shooters) of photography. I have never lost a shot waiting for it to grab focus. Optically, I agree... there is magic in this lens. It can be measured or quantified, but it is special.

I also think that generally there are less reviews for Fuji gear than Canon/Sony/Nikon. It’s much harder to find a variety of reviews for a lens like this because frankly it is quite old (not a criticism) and there are less views to be had in long term reviews. Hi Dee, your thoughts match my feelings exactly! I traded the 23mm f/2 for the 23mm f/1.4 and the 35mm f/2 for the 35mm f/1.4 and, although these newer lenses are smaller, quicker, more silent and cheaper, I like the old lenses much more; the images are more inspiring and grab the attention of the viewer more, I think. Same thing for the 18mm f/2, which I also love for its rendering, although the focussing (just as the 35mm) is a bit (only a bit, though) noisy and quirky. And I agree, you can get too hung up on specs and charts (and I have, frequently, in the past :)), but it's ultimately the images that count.

Just bought an XT4, mainly for film making since I have an x100f for pics. if I were to get one or two prime lenses, which would you choose for landscapes, street, portraits basically everything for video? So funny, I am glad I'm not the only one that bought a 35mm 1.4 (loved it) and 18mm 2 (loved it) but then sold them and "upgraded" them when "optimizing" my APS-C fuji lens line up a while back. Then tried to convince myself that my new lenses were better, they had to be... only to realize I really really loved the look of both of those original primes far more than I liked what replaced them in my new collection so re-purchased those two. I am so glad fuji still makes the original 35mm 1.4 and 18 2 as those two lenses have a bit of special in terms of look that is hard to describe but there's something I can see. I am a little tiny bit disappointed that Fuji doesn't seem to want to release any more in the same pattern of older-school design with a few improvements (as both the 35 1.4 and 18 2.0 ARE better than older traditional designs) without sacrificing the "look". What makes these so great are the look and the size and the large aperture. The only thing I'd like to see is an LM motor in both without making them bigger. Ps. If you like the 35mm 1.4 because of the look and haven't tied the 18 f2 because of all the flack it gets because it's "soft" in the corners, just ignore it. That lens is even more special when used between f/4 (where it's VERY sharp) and wide open close up. It's rendering is just delicious. And... if you are shooting at f/4 or larger who the hell cares if it's sharp in the corners??? the focus plain is razor thin shooting at distances you'd use it for anything real. As an added bonus I've always always love the 50/28 combo on film cameras, pretty much my goto combo for anything on my Leica bodies back in the day). I'm the odd man out as I really never liked 35mm as it seems to me and where I like to stand and favored perspectives it was good at nothing. The 28(18) FOV vs 35mm(23) FOV are worlds apart if you shoot people which are worlds apart from 50(35).
@DeeRosa3 жыл бұрын
The look is exactly why I love them. The character is off the charts and it handled well in a lot of situations that an "old" "cheap" "non professional" lens shouldn't and I think it performs better than their "better" lenses.

Thanks for the video, great stuff. Can I ask you a question? Which other wider lens would you recommend to complement the 35mm f1.4. I've read a forum last night and in there people were getting to the conclusion that the 18-55mm kit lens suffers from quality controls issues and there are some that are very good and some that are less good (don't know if its related of being built in japan or another country), but, oh man, this things make it even harder to choose. If i could get my hands on a good standard well made 18-55, i think I'll be very happy with the package overall. And it would be very complemented with the 35 f1.4 prime. The reason things are a bit dodgy for me is that i live in Brazil and i usually buy these products when i'm a in a short trip to the US, so no time to return if i got a bad lens. I'm debating now if there is another option to complement the 35 f1.4. Perhaps the 23 f2 (450 U$), but the focal length is not that different, so maybe not the best idea. The next one would be the 18 f2, which people seems to hate or love, depending to who you ask, but it is 600 U$, ouch. Theres also the 27mm f2.8, but that is even closer to 35mm. Then there is the 16mm f2.8 (400 U$) which, idk, seems like a worst idea then the zoom for me... Currenlty divided between the 18-55 and the 23 f2, but all help is aprecieted. Thanks again

Well if it's a 3-4 lens kit and you're shooting video mostly I'd go with the Fuji 16/2.8, 35/2, 50/2, 90/2. If you're shooting mostly portraits I'd go with 18/2, 35/1.4, Viltrox 56 1.4, and the 90/2. If you are selling expensive canon glass and will have some cash laying around and want an all around experience with zooms go with 16-55/2.8, 35/1.4, 50/2, 50-140/2.8. If you're trying to save some cash I'd go the kit lens (yes I know but it's so damn good) Fuji 18-55/2.8-4, Viltrox 23/1.4, Fuji 35/1.4, Viltrox 85/1.8. If you do wedding at all or plan to I'd go 23/2, 35/1.4, 90/2, and buy the Fujifilm macro extension tube. If you want my personal opinion my top 4 fuji lenses to own period from experience (I've owned all of the ones I've mentioned) 18/2, 35/1.4, 50/2, 90/2. All from Fuji.

Even more the way it renders skin as it's somewhat soft and the color you get out of it lends it's way to somewhat akin to Canon where the yellows and oranges are brushed a little making creases and marks in the face seem touched up already. It is great for portraits because the face is sharp but the skin is soft to the touch. Not to mention the way it creates the background blur is distinct and similar to the 56/1.2 in that the pattern is almost water color instead of a clinical gaussian like the f/2 or new lenses. Did that help?

To my eyes, this lens has a very similar soul to the ZM 1.5/50mm Zeiss C Sonnar only without the focus shift and with a slightly modernized flavor. I absolutely love it.

Lmfao I'm one of those people grinding their hands on the aperture ring. I'm not sure if it gets looser over time of if your opinion about it has changed over a year since you made the video. Also spot on about it being a lens you sell and buy back. I literally tried to do that 2 weeks ago since I had re-bought the 35mm f/2. The only reason I didn't sell it is because B&H said it was in too poor of a condition for then to buy. I used it again yesterday and it's going to be my primary lens for the forseeable future. I'll just use the 35 f/2 on rainy and snowy days once I get my X-T2 fixed.

The ring is still good a couple years in. Might be the way I grip it cause my hands too big 🥴

Do you have any experience with the 60 2.4 on an X-T2? If you do, can you compare the auto focus to the 35 1.4 on an X-T2? The 60 is sometimes very finicky (on the X-T2), wondering if the 35 is any quicker or more confident.
@DeeRosa3 жыл бұрын
Theyre both gonna be slow on the xt2 - it isn't a lens issue it's an algorithm issue. When painted with an xt3 or later both of those lenses perform better. Performance on the 35 will only be slightly better than the 60 depending on your application.

I do not have budget and so will get XE-4 with 35 mm f 2.0 (instead of 28 mm) and that too after few months. That too will be stretch for me. But I know 35mm 1.4 is wonder of lens. Whereas 2.0 has lens distortion. How much it matters? I think you can give me a more better viewpoint and reasoning for your views
@DeeRosa3 жыл бұрын
I didn't mind the 35/2 but I just felt my images looked boring. It's subjective.
@twocupsstudio3 жыл бұрын
@@DeeRosa Maybe its in mind (as you said its subjective). Because I saw many images in flickr which look good with 35/2. But you are in love with 1.4 and so will favour that but definitely 1.4 from photography point of view would be great. For videos, I think 2.0 has edge for focusing faster and more silent motor. But I am more for photography and I think I can start with 28mm kit lens with XE-4 and also get ttartisans 35 mm and wait to get 35 1.2 later on when things become possible.
@DeeRosa3 жыл бұрын
It is subjective - I personally don't like the look of the 35/2. I never said it was a bad lens. Because it's not. To me it's just boring. But it is NOT that great of a video lens. The 23/2 and 50/2 are far greater. Just FYI. The only lens that's ever had trouble keeping me in focus from my X Pro 3 focus was the 35/2.

If u like more characterized photos out of the camera, get this. I have the 35mm f2 and its great, less sharp than a voigt but much cheaper. It doesn’t have the flaws that make your images look more unique though. But I just use vintage lenses for character: they have more, are cheaper, and I love manual shooting with them

Just found your channel and really enjoyed this vid (+1 subscribers for you!). I’m seriously looking at moving to Fuji as my Canon 600d (Rebel T3i in the US) has had its day. The plastic fantastic nifty fifty mk2 has been my go to for many many years and it’s focus speed is an absolute dumpster fire! Wasn’t an issue until I started trying to photograph my 10mth old baby! Lens AF speed, eye and face detect speed, all these things have improved so much that factoring in character still leaves me with a quantum leap in performance. I, like everybody else, get enamored by baller specs, but at the end of the day you have to look at your photos on the wall or the screen of your phone and truly love them. Love having taken them, remind you why you took them, and love just simply looking at them.

I enjoyed reading this. I think you'd enjoy Fujifilm and honestly you don't have to get a newer model to have a gear time. My favorite camera of all time is the Fuji XE-3 and if you pair that with Fujifilm plastic fantastic (XC 35/2) you'll have a blast. It'll be a "cheap" alternative that is more than enough to make you a happy shooter.

Because of focus by wire this lens isn't good for manual focus either because it's still noisy as hell. I actually bought the viltrox 35mm 1.4 for video. So yeah, now i have two 35mm 1.4. I could never sell the Fujinon 35mm 1.4, because it has this damn magical formula in it (and it was the first Fuji i had). It is the uniquenes some of us are thriving for. A few weeks ago i shot it while it was kinda wet snowing and at some point all my pictures came out overexposed and smeared unsharp. Still don't know what the problem was but after a day above the radiator luckily everything was fine again. So there might be a potential problem using this lens in the weather.

Very nuch like your style, your content and opponions! I have an X-Pro 1 since last year. Love it, it feels like a companion rather then a tool, with its quirks and character, diva like 💃🏼. got it with the 18/2 and 35/1.4 I tried the 23/2 and the X-Pro 1 got a right kick up the AF ass 😉. Somehow I talked myself into getting the newer ‚Fujicrons‘. So I sold the 35/1.4 and got the f2. Now it is a bit faster to focus in lie contrast scenes and silent. BUT as you said, I just miss that look in the photos, the colors, the light etc, the f2 is a bit more steril, clinical, whereas the 1.4 has tons of character. I guess combined with the 1st trans sensor the f2 looses a bit of the steril look. But I miss the 1.4. ok AF is slow om the X-Pro 1, but I do not shoot sports, so no problem. Short: I like to re-buy the 1.4 and sell the f2. 🥴. Glad I kept the 18/2. I think it is a cool combo 18 (28) and 35 (50) 💪🏻 And for that just one camera one lens time, I have the X100T that I shoot since 2014. also a very cool camera! Cheers from Switzerland Looking fwd to your next vid 👏🏻

50 videos in and you convinced me 😂 combine it with the xe4, will wait with the final decision after the announcements on September 2 (the rumoured T30 mark 2 and 24 1.4 mark 2, and maybe the 33 1.4.) + all the third party lenses (Viltrox, Tokina), soon hopefully Sigma as well, and the all in one zoom lens from Tamron. Oh boy, what a great time to get into the Fuijfilm ecosystem!:)

whats ur take on 23 f 1.4 which is 35mm equivalent
@DeeRosa3 жыл бұрын
It's a nice lens and fast also - but I sold it after 2 months. 35mm isn't my favorite focal length in anythjng but video. For photography I feel it's too narrow to get a whole scene and too wide to get good enough compression and falloff no matter how fast it is. So it was this weird in between kinda like how I feel about the 16 f1.4 - the 24mm focal length is useful but it's too narrow and too wide at the same time. Great IQ though. Has lots of character and for family photos and environmental portraits with let's say couples I'd recommend it because it has a very pleasing look across the lens - but if you want it for anything other than that I can recommend it and feel like I led you down the right road. It's a situational lens is my final opinion; a lens that you bring for jobs only but you may not reach for it 80% of the time.

Haha. Amazing! Love the comment about the aperture ring. So many reviewers are like “I wish the aperture ring were stiffer” and I think the exact same thing. What the f are you doing with your lens? Do you have no control over your hands? If anything, the loose, but still clicked aperture is best: gives you reference points but also doesn’t make the camera jump if you’re shooting video.
@DeeRosa3 жыл бұрын
I'd actually agree. Don't mind the ring at all and I've never assaulted it 😂
@danielmcilroy70893 жыл бұрын
One thing I will say having just played with this lens in a LCS a few months ago is that it is fine when using but I noticed it was a bit awkward taking the lens on and off the camera. That’s not really a ring stiffness thing though, more of a locking mechanism thing (that’s now on the 27 2.8, and only becoming a thing on the most recent Sony GM glass)
