It actually replaces a sony a1 which overheated all the time. Image quality ist great snd sharp! I use it to crop in to my guitar fretboard so can choose my framing in post - the x-h2 is perfect for that! I use 2 x-h2s for my other two cams (total and right hand). I also like the very fast cf express b cards - my workflow is perfect for my needs now!

great content as ever! How was the exposure changes in video if auto modes used in video eg shutter priority auto iso and or appeture? The exposure changes are very jerky when moving to different lighting conditions on the xt4

Fantastic review as always! Given the higher megapixels for more detailed photos, I would choose this over the S model. The video would already be a step up for me from X-T4. But I am in the group who needs their manual dials and will patiently wait for X-T5. Do you believe X-T5 would at least match the megapixels count from X-H2, or will it implement same stacked sensor as the S? Or perhaps an in-between the two? Steven Seagull test subject XD

That's the big question - I'm sure future Fujifilm bodies will use one of the two new sensors, but not sure which. if it were me, I'd probably use the 40mp one in most of them, as the S sensor is v specialist and expensive.

I agree! I loved the XH1 and the dials give WAY more flexibility for settings. I got the XH2 and it is way more limited on how to adjust. I wish I didn't sell the XH1! Plus it felt better in the hand: XH2 body is way too short.

I present and report the facts. The problem with rumours - even ones that end up being correct - is they're often open to some interpretation that gets confused, and before you know what's happened, a load of incorrect statements are released by other folk which spread like wildfire. I end up wasting time debunking some of these which could have been avoided.

I live on a sailboat, and often find myself speeding through a harbour trying not to crash while surrounded by birds. Or like last night entering a crowded channel just after moonrise trying to align moon with lighthouse without running around. I'd be very interested in a deeper AF comparison between the two versions in a dynamic context!!

I was hoping to see the XH2 high resolution still images with its 40 Megapixels VS the 36 Megapixel the difference in details and which lenses are best suited for photography. But I see only videos, honestly I don't shoot videos and I would not by it for videos, only if it delivers good crisp high resolution images.

Hi Gordon, thank you for your review of this camera. Can you please tell me which is the better video quality in 4K 60fps X-H2 or X-T4, I saw on the specifications that in that mode the X-H2 does sub sampling, which honestly I don't know what it means exactly (if you can write in reply it would be great), but I know that it is in X -T4 over sampling and that it is of good quality? Also for the new X-T5, I saw in the video reviews that the video quality is worse than the X-T4 for that mode and in general for video, is that true?

The X-H2 and X-T5 line-skip for 4k 50 and 60p. You only get the 'HQ' oversampled option at 24-30p. Both should still be better than the X-T4 BUT compare the resolution charts from my respective reviews of each (upcoming for the XT5)

@@360Link I don't think any of the Fujifilms oversample above 4k 30, but I don't recall exactly how the Xt4 did it, but please do watch my xt4 video and compare the results. That's more important than trying to guess based on the frame generation.

Excellent review, very helpful! I’m considering getting this camera, but wonder if I’ll need a CF Express card or can save a bit of money and stick with a UHS ii? I’ll most likely be shooting in 6.2K, as well as maybe the 8K oversampling option, but can’t see myself utilising the RAW video options as I don’t really have a need for it. Do you think it’s worth getting a CF Express card anyway?

If you're not using ProRes or shooting lots of bursts, I'd say you're fine with SD.

If you mean a low pass filter, I believe all digital cameras have them.

@@cameralabs no I mean IR (infrared), this is mostly important for videographers using high stop ND filters. Basically some cinema cameras done have the ir filters therefore the ND filters with introduce ir pollution, which mostly affects the dark blacks, giving a faded red hue cast

Great review 👌 I’ve seen a lot of wedding and events photographers using high end full frame cameras then having a budget lens infront of that camera so what’s the point in having full frame ?

Different sort of result. An APSC camera with a really good lens may be able to deliver sharper results than FF with a cheap lens BUT the FF may still give you some benefit in noise. Ideally people should put aside assumptions and biases and just test a particular system in a particular environment and choose the one that works best for them. Lots of factors and variables to consider. I'm certainly happy with APSC for my work.

Hi Gordon, Do you think comparing X-H2 side by side with Canon R7 would be an interesting especially Fuji's 8K vs Canon's 4K HQ. Also both have crop sensor making them good for wildlife photo and videography but the animal/subject auto-focus, burst rate etc. can make or break the decision that would be another interesting comparison between the two. Also I saw on Camera conspiracies channel that the X-H2 120P quality is worse than X-T4 which seems like going back instead of an upgrade, what are you thoughts on this?

I guess you've missed the "Why did Canon design a wildlife camera with poor weather sealing?" or "Why did Canon design a camera that shoots 30 fps but cripple it with a tiny buffer that runs out in 1 second?" The R7 is a very budget wildlife camera and if you want to go down that route, the R10 would be better/cheaper. Mike Riley has a channel. He's been using a X-H2S for over a month for wildlife, check it out.

Hello, when you compare the two 6.2K you say that the one from the xh2s is less megapixel for the same viewing angle (crop)... but it is wrong, because 6.2k is just the horizontal when you get the opengate to frame the 16:9 they are actually the same pixel density (the x-h2 just oversample the 6.2 but appart from that ) :)

You're right, the figure is referring to the horizontal figure, which of course remains the same regardless of the height. BUT I did still notice a small benefit to the X-H2 here, which must be down to the mild oversample from the XH2. Thanks for the comment.

Hi Gordon, Thank you for X-H2/X-H2S comparison.. At 8:43 of the video, you show the test chart comparison for 1080 200P on the test charts. These are interesting results. The X-H2S looks poor compared to the X-H2 on vertical line set--particularly around 13. On the horizontal line set the situation is reversed. Here, the X-H2S looks superior to the X-H2 at around 17. Why do you suppose there is a difference? I think the real comparison is the diagonal line set in the upper left corner where the X-H2S looks horrible in comparison the X-H2. Thoughts? Don

Well spotted. When you see differences in H&V resolving power, you're seeing where the pixels are being binned. Sometimes H information being dumped, sometimes V. Not always to both at the same time. Interesting that they do it differently here.

@@cameralabs Thank you for the explanation on V&H resolving power. I was doing 240P tests with a friends X-H2S over the weekend on birds. When I allowed ISO to be very high (over 3200) we found lots of artifacts in the image--similar to those in the diagonal lines in the upper left corner of the resolution chart. Noise reduction helped a little. However, if I kept ISO low (sub 1250 using either Flog or Egterna), tried to get as close to the 180 degree shutter rule as possible and applied fairly heavy temporal noise reduction in DRS (Frames = 4 or higher, Motion's Type=Better, Temporal Threshold = 50 or higher for Luma and Chrominance) I could manage a somewhat respectable image at 240P. Of course this comes at the cost of increased render/encoding time. We can get away with lower ISO's outdoors in Phoenix, AZ because it is very bright here most of the time. I should add my tests may mean nothing because I was not using a resolution chart. Probably should invest in one of these charts. Seems to me if one, if one is considering either the XH2 or the XH2S, max budget for a camera is $2500 USD and slow motion is a factor in your decision, then you have decide what is more important: the very good 4K 120P of the XH2S or better 1080 240P of the X-H2. If would be terrific if there was one perfect camera. There are none. Life is about trade-offs.

@@arizonarealestatewithdonbarar I'd definitely choose the 4k 120 over any 1080 mode as you can always generate 1080 from 4k if required. Question then is if 120 is slow enough. Not many of these cameras do a great job above 120p.

@@avartefilms7346 I would not purchase FujiFilm anything. I’ll give you an example. I was videoing myself with an X-H2S the other day using left eye detect. I was a little left of center. The little white box was showing up on my left eye. However, because the green focus box was not in the same location as the little white box, the camera failed to focus on me. And the X-H2 autofocus is not as good as the X-H2S. The fact that Fujifilm in 2024 cannot figure out how to execute appropriate autofocus does not warrant them receiving any more of my business. You should not purchase anything from them as well. Once people stop buying Fujifilm, maybe then they will figure out how to do autofocus.

oh my the 1080 to 4k to 6.2k to 8k great comparison... the jump from 4k to 6.2k was just crisp to me, where as the jump from 6.2k to 8 is probably hitting diminishing return to me at least. The real question to me is, what parts of the XH2 and XH2S would actually land in the XT5 and XPRO4. I feel like XH2S would be a more advance XT5 where as the XH2 would be more XPRO4 daddy.

Great review Gordon. All these choices regarding new cameras is a great problem to have! I shoot primarily street but want to get more in to video. I am hoping that the X-T5 goes back to a flip screen as I enjoy shooting from waist level sometimes. If it does and has the same decent image stabilization, similar video specs and the 40mp resolution of the X-H2 then I will probably sell my X100V and get that. 40MP is sweet for cropping when needed for sure. For video I rarely record myself so no need for the articulating screen. I swear if Fuji moved to full frame it would be world domination, lol!

I'm tempted by the H2 and glad to hear there's no major compromises that have been hidden away when it comes to video. I do wonder what exactly the difference is between the two 4k modes. I get that the hq version downsamples from 8k, but how is the normal 4k mode rendering the image. That small crop surely cant do all the work...

I believe the non-HQ is pixel binning more than over-sampling, but to me they looked more similar than the two equivalent modes on the EOS r5.

Then Casey gives up 4K 120P with the X-H2s. I know he likes 240P. But not that much of his stuff is actually 240P--except those wonderful runs across the street with a silly look and an occasional bird "death jump". If you follow his Casey''s channel closely, even he recommends slowing down the shutter speed to get the most detail in slower moving subjects. Of course, if money is no object get an Alpha 1. But then one has to carry around a 4.5 lbs 200-600 zoom. One has to pick their poison. There are no free lunches.

I think you can rely on Gordon's reviews Let me add a couple of things on IBIS and Autofocus as I have been testing a friends X-H2S/XF 70-300. With respect to IBIS, I found it to jump a little with horizontal panning. However in most cases using Davinci Resolve Studio translation stabilization/camera lock only and zoom transformation set to 1.1-1.2 I can remove most of the jumps. With respect to Autofocus, if I really zoom in on a subject on the computer I can see some moving in and out of focus. Also, if there are other birds in the image area, there are times when the autofocus will move back and forth between birds with AF Speed = 0. I would need more time to experiment to determine if this can be mitigated by setting AF Speed to: -1, -2, etc. to see if this "subject hunting" can be mitigated.

I like how Casey's outdoor footage kinda shows how a hobby (but talented) level user's results might look rather than footage produced by a hardened photographer/videographer with 25 years experience getting the very most out of whatever they use with every jig available and trick in the book. The horizontal jumping when panning may be a little annoying I guess with pitwall flyby footage. But these are very new camera's how harsh are we judging compared to a truly ancient and cheap Panasonic ultra zoom from 10 years ago and a GoPro8, I guess anything is probably good enough compared to where I'm stepping up from. I'm hoping for in car footage of track laps the stabilisation will be smooth and shake free enough so that I can judge mine and motorsport friends car setups and driving from. I find the GoPro wide angle view isn't great from in car, would love a more normal perspective you see (hence my desire to go real camera setup) and also been wanting to do my own astrophotography stuff using the local club telescopes for years. One camera, two good use cases. I also like the Micro 4/3 options but worry about less sensor same money why bother. Thankyou for those pointers, especially on stabilisation in software experience you've given, printing those notes off now to keep for later once system purchased will come in handy for sure! Cheers

@@cameralabs that is true! I hope that the S2R is like a full frame XH2 so I could stay within the ecosystem. I really like the low light of the S5 above the other cameras (even the A7SIII simply because i can turn off noise reduction leading to really sharp video even at insane ISOs)

Perfect camera, apart from that damn rear LCD. I really don’t want to have to reach, pull out and twist every time I need the screen. Then I have to look to the left and leave it sticking out like a sore thumb. Fujifilm please don’t copy canon and just offer this awful screen, please give us a choice, as most filmmakers aren’t interested in just vlogging. The tilt screen is so much faster, convenient and unobtrusive. Thank you.

What resolution do you get if you use super16 S16 lenses? What is the crop? And pixel count?
