The front manual focus dial (S,C,M) was changed to a digital button to work with the 7 custom settings. When you set a custom setting you can choose either Single, Continuous or Manual focus, and having a manual type dial would confuse or interfere with this. So as much as I love the manual dial, I can understand Fujifilm reasoning for doing this

I just have rented an X-H2S for two days. In the beginning, I was very confused about the relocated or omitted buttons and dials, being a year-long X-T3 user. But after this bad start, I grew in love with the new system more. I really like the deep grip, it makes lugging the camera around much more comfortable and secure. Also, the command dial is really handy for separating different frame rates and F-log/ETERNA and allows fast switching between them, with the shutter speed changing automatically (when set). Also, changing the shutter speed with the wheels proves to be faster than using the dial for me. Then there's the ISO, which stills feels slower, but the point is that often, I don't need to change it, I will either set it to ISO 640 for DR400%, ISO 1250 for F-log 2 or higher values the occasions that I shoot at dark. So I feel like it doesn't even have to take weeks to learn the new system, but someone will likely be seeing the first fruits already after some days of (thoughtful) use. So in the end, I feel like the mind-blowing image quality of these news sensors, and especially the new F-log 2 in the X-H2S prove to be worth adapting to this new handling, combined with the added speed benefit of 7 custom modes. I feel it's a very worthy compromise and when I have the money, I will likely add the X-H2S to my equipment to be my new A-camera. I would highly recommend you to test the video features of the S-model, the dynamic range and color reproduction are amazing in F-log 2 on it! There's something so filmic and rich about the footage, it's clearly a step above the X-T3 and X-T4 and I am glad for that, it means we have something truly new!

When I added an XT4 to my 5D m.II I was so excited about the dedicated dials and those little evils now are not an option but a must have. In almost 2 years of usage, I've NEVER use the video mode button and I think this tells more than everything else what this camera represents to me. I agree with your last words about a possible XT5. @riverpb52502 жыл бұрын
@@benchabasilem4352 specs-wise, pretty much nothing. that's the thing with fujifilm. as a brand, their cameras are generation-based. so, for every generation, all cameras will have identical or very similar specs. the differences lie mostly in the body style. the XT4 is SLR-style that's designed for both photos and videos (it's got IBIS), while the XPRO3 is a rangefinder-style with no LCD screen (it's hidden) and optical viewfinder. so, even though they have the same specs, the XPRO3's design makes it hard to do video. but yeah, they're pretty much the same exact camera in different bodies. same sensor. same specs with minor differences.

With the price tag of a FF camera, I in addition to that I have to change all my lenses then the choice between moving to the XH2 or switching to an other brand FF offering would be really seamless from a cost perspective. I would love to see Fuji push the customisation of their new cameras to the same standard as the a7IV.

I started with a PASM dial with Nikon, so I wouldn’t be upset at all. I do prefer my X-T4 dials way more, but I think higher megapixels for cropping capabilities, future proofing video with 8K, better AF, and the deeper grip are worth it for me. I’m still upset that Fuji STILL hasn’t added a feature to close the shutter when changing out a lens. I’m sure they can add that in a firmware update, but the question is, will they?
@CWReace2 жыл бұрын
Got my XH2S earlier this week. Regarding exposure compensation, I just figured out this tip if you want to use it while in manual mode while using auto ISO (like I do for wildlife photography). You need to assign the exposure compensation option ("+/-" icon) to a button. Then you use that button to turn it on/off, and when turned on you'll use a dial to adjust the compensation. (In shutter or aperture priority, exposure compensation is always available on the other dial than the one you have configured for aperture or shutter in those respective modes.)

I really hope that the 40mp sensor comes down to the XT5, I do not like PASM very much. As someone who learned photography on an XT3, the way I control the exposure of my shots doesn't neatly translate to a PASM system. But I am also concerned about my current lenses, will they be able to resolve a sensor that's nearly twice the resolution?

Dear chris I own the xh2s. I wish you could test it. 40 frames a second twice as fast as the xh2 14+ stops of dynamic range and an autofocus on par with Sony. That is a beast of a camera. The İSO performance is at least 1,5 stop better providing a fantastic Low light performance which I am a little concern with xh2.
@timblass88732 жыл бұрын
As a recent XT switcher, the button for changing the focus options (single to continuous) I agree, that muscle memory thing on the dial is a big change. PASM was a relatively easy transition for me from the XT3 (but then I have a Ricoh GR3 so the custom options are a natural extension.) The ISO button v physical dial was the hardest thing to deal with tbh. Getting there 3 months in! I'm on an XH2S but the above all applies to the XH2 given the same form factor and physical input layouts

Thanks - very informative as always. What I like are: the 40mp for detail, the loss of the SCM dial (it never got hardwired into my brain on either the XT3 or X100F, so turning the camera around is a pain), and the PASM dial (I've seen the light! It's just so much faster and the custom options are great for quick switching of shooting modes). What I don't like is the flippy screen (I never film myself and having the screen on axis to myself and the camera seems more intuitive to me). So there is a lot to like here. The big concern (which you have alleviated a little) is just how much we can push and pull those crowded 40 mp in LR.

I had the XH2S on a loan for a week-end recently courtesy of Fujifilm UK (for those who don’t know, you can have it for free up to 2 days with any lens of your choice. Thank you Fuji. The other brand who does it is Canon in the UK and I had to pay for the Sony A7IV 😔). Coming from an XT2, I wasn’t bothered at all by the PASM dial nor the focus mode switch. I went to the zoo to test the autofocus and I wasn’t disappointed at all. It’s only issue I had and still have is with the price tag. An APSC camera at 2,500GBP, with same image quality as my XT2, some very advanced features I don’t need as an enthusiast shooter but not a professional. The XH2 gives you more megapixels, much improved autofocus vs previous Fuji models even if not as good as the XH2s (still to be verified on production model) and is 20% cheaper. If I stay with Fuji, I think it will probably be the XH2 and not the XH2S. The only point to verify is how well the “old” Fuji lenses perform on this brand new 40 megapixels sensor. If the XH2 requires changing lenses, I’ll probably go the FF route….

I’m waiting for the X-H2 to test it and probably keep it if is AF is OK for me. Regarding your question about the AF switch of AF button: I prefer the button over the switch because I can assign an AF mode to C1-C7 custom modes. For example, during my test of the X-H2S, I had C1 for AF-S + single point for AF and C2 for AF-C + zone focus.

Hi! I like your Vids! But I had to say this.. The Exclusion of the MCS Focus Dial, has a REAL purpose. = In order to allow the custom dials to be fully Customizable, that needs to be done. => It allows you the set the type of focus individually, to each custom setting you desire. (manual, continuous or single) *Which is actually brilliant. I absolutely hated at first.. but when I realized this is the reason it makes sense. Thanks for the great content!

Completely agree. I love the MCS dial on my XT3 but actually understanding why they've done it is clear. On XH2s I can now set C1 for Fast Action: Continuous autofocus, 40 FPS, fast action , auto ISOetc. Then with one click to C2 I have landscape, single shot, single focus, different colours, manual ISO etc etc. C3 = action movie etc etc. Whereas on the XT3 I have to move every dial (almost). for each type of mission change. I'll still get an XT5 as well though!

I’ve been using the X-H2S for the past two months. I came from the X-T3. Initially, I thought the PASM and the AF button would give me trouble. I have not found that I miss the AF switch or the exposure dials. Yes, you have to relearn, but then, you’re relearning what Sony, Canon, and Nikon users already know. You see it settings on the screen. You gotta use the camera to get the feel for it, Chris.

Take care! I will be with my eyes open to see if you throw at us another excellent video of these cameras.

Super pumped about this, but a little bummed at the same time about the Front/Rear Dial settings. Looking for them to add the ability to add ISO to one of the command dials like the previous cameras via firmware update. Being limited to Aperture and SS doesn’t make much since, given that all native lenses (as far as I know of) have aperture rings. That level of customization really set us apart from other companies. But with this, it makes me feel like we’re heading towards an overly digital set up that takes away from some of what made Fuji so special and different. I think the ISO button is a great addition, as long as our options aren’t taken away. That flexibility with the dials is more suitable for fast paced shooting in my opinion. My set up was Right Index on Front Dial (SS), Thumb on Back Dial (ISO), Left Hand under lens for Aperture - it was so intuitive and fluid as opposed to having to press a button and change the ISO on screen. Would love for this to be added to the camera

Great first impressions video. Thanks! I'm going from an x-s10 to the x-h2 when I can get my hands on one. It's an easier 'leap' than from my x-h1 which I got after the x-s10. With the x-h1 I liked the many dials *unless* I was in a hurry. Having a single dial to switch to full auto is very handy. The custom settings are also much more *inclusive*, being able to set focus mode, burst mode,ISO, IQ, etc. at the twist of a dial to a single position (C1 is birds-in-flight) instead of getting the same shooting mode on the x-h1. Conversely, it's also faster switching back to P for 'normal' shooting modes. For those with an x-s10, play around more with it and the transition to the x-h2 will be much easier:) BTW: I went from an x-t20 to the x-s10 for IBIS!!

I went from the X-T3 to the X-H2S. I don't miss the dials; PSAM was easy to adjust to. I wish they had released the X-H2 and X-H2S at the the same time to enable better comparisons. Now I think I may have been too hasty getting the H2S as the H2 seems better oriented to still photography (which is what I do), and and X-H2S more to video. I'm really looking forward to a direct side-by-side comparison, particularly in image quality and focusing speed. I hope I don't have to trade in the H2S for an H2! I also prefer the focus switch to the button. But on the X-H2S it doesn't work the way you say in the video: You don't press it repeatedly to switch modes, you first press it and then use a dial to cycle through the modes. This is very inconvenient. But a bigger problem that I have is that I keep accidentally pushing it when using the lens zoom ring. To the point where I have had to deactivate the focus button. Thanks for the great video(s)!

When considering switching to Fuji from a system with PASM, this may the model to buy. But upgrading from my X-T3, I would wait for the X-T5. On the other hand I still haven''t used all the high tech options of the X-T3. It is still a perfect camera. Upgrading only because there are newer models, in my opinions is a waiste of money. Before going digital I used an Olympus OM-1n for almost 15 years.

Nice video, I want an XH2 (I own an X100F and XE4) what do you think about the Kit lens with XH2 (comes with Fujinon 16-80mm) or is better choice bought apart the 18-120mm ?

I think I'll wait for the X-T5 before I rush out to buy the X-H2. Like you, the whole reason I like Fujifilm X-T(x) is that they are tactile and have proper old school dials for main functions. I dislike multi-function dials and switches, the X-T series just works so well with my workflow, I can't see me liking the X-H2.

Whooa, you have it on my favorite lens, the XF 50 mm F1.0.....my favorite ....well, that and the 50-140, both are beasts. What a beautiful sight, the 50 with the XH2....🤤

Thanks Chris I think I’m where you are on the XH-2 I got to try one in the Fujifilm House of Photography in London yesterday and it’s mighty impressive although coming from and XT-3 quite a leap in size to the extent that it’s not far short of a GFX. I’m going to hold fire and see what an XT-5 brings before I jump to PASM

I definitely prefer the front manual focus dial (S,C,M) on X-T3 vs the push button on X-H2. Thanks for all your great videos.

it looks like the x-h2 is an hyper x-s10. coming from that camera i pretty much see no disadvantage. the dials work the same way,the ergos are pretty much the same...

The focus mode selector, as a button, won't cause conflicts if the camera is remote controlled. As a newcomer to the X-mount system, and maybe I'm becoming too old, I find the front lever focus mode continually confusing to remember. I wish it was a slide switch, and preferably on the back. But I understand why it may now be a button, and I believe it can be customised too which is good for those that just shoot in one mode.

Great review, thank you. With the launching of the X-T5, we will probably get an improvement of AF which will be release in a firmware for the X-H2
@brunomfreitas22 жыл бұрын
I prefer the af switch as a button, this way you can assigned diferent AF modes in the custom dial, like single for photos, and continuous for video... in the xt4 when I change from photo to video, I have too change always the Af mode in the switch, in my h2s I have it assigned, single to focus and continuous to video...

Just what I needed, I was not sure (coming from the XT3) if I should go with the XT5 or the XH2 as both cameras are currently the same price. I loved my xt20 and xt3. So, I’ll go for the xt5

Great video, thanks for your time and afford putting this together. I agree with you that I prefer a switch verses a button for the focusing mode. I’m looking forward to the xt-5 and hopefully the same features as this camera with all the manual controls.

Picking up one tomorrow for a crazy good deal...going to sell me XT4. I'll miss the dials, but I've shot with PSAM forever as a Canon user. I won't be too sad!

As an XT-4 user, I agree that it takes some time to get used to the PASM and associated buttons and menue's. But I really struggled with the EV compensation and I am still somewhat confused about bracketing. How do I know it is one? I made the mistake of going one a photography tour/ seminar with a one day old X-H2 and while everyone loved it, it came back to me with various functions adjusted and suddenly I noticed all my shots were bracketed. So it will take some getting used to but I am really pleased with the out of camera and RAW files especially as I have studio work in mind. Thanks for a great review.

Thank you so much for this review, I was about to order the camera, and was eagerly waiting your review! The best channel, for my fuji education! I hope they will soon send you a camera to try it everyway it's possible! The only thing I would love to get is the animal eye focus!!!WHYYY can't they put it there, don't they know that wildlife photographers prefer more mpx paired with a good long tele? We do have place to crop in, which gives us all the details plus composition possibilities .... thank you very much Ryan (By the way is your name Ryan or Chris? ) I will have a hard time to change from Xt4 to the XH2!!!! Best wishes for you from Uruguay.

Hi, Chris. Sorry I missed you by one day at the Fujikina in NYC. However I was able to make the acquaintance of Take - great guy. Although I currently shoot both X-H1 and X-T4, I have ordered an X-H2 along with the 18-120 lens from my local camera dealer. As a former owner of Canon cameras with their ubiquitous PASM dials, I will be reverting to that mindset. Although I prefer several tactile dials to one PASM dial, I love the balance of the H2 with the new aforementioned zoom lens. Also the superior grip and leaf shutter of the H system cannot be gainsaid. I guess the aphorism, "There ain't no free lunch," applies in this case. Thank you for your introductory reviews of the H2. I look forward to further reviews of this camera after your purchasing one. (Hint, hint!)

I was the same as you, wait for the X-T5 then you have the perfect camera. BUT for me, I do a lot of sports, so a stacked sensor is likely the better option. I read that the X-T5 is likely to have the ‘non-stacked’ version so I bought the X-H2s after much hand wringing..
@matthieuzglurg60152 жыл бұрын
hey there, I currently shoot on an X-T2 and I don't have any plans to buy an X-H2 or X-H2S. The autofocus of the X-T2 is already plenty for me, as well as its resolution, and video specs (4K30 with Flog, yes please!). I still have my trusty old Nikon D700 and even though I would like to have a better grip on my X-T2, the reason I switched to Fuji is the compact size and modular aspect of the thing (with an additional grip, I can have a grip that is just as deep and the D700, while being much lighter. And if I don't need it and want a smaller camera to fit in a bag, well that's just one screw away). So in the end, is the X-H2 on my radar? No. Even the X-T4 wasn't (found it a little too bulky and I'm not really a fan of the flip out screen). I'm curious to see what the X-T5 will be but I fear it's just going to be an X-T4 with the new sensor and processor which would not be the camera for me. I understood that the 4th generation of Fuji cameras needed a video centric body (the 3rd gen had the X-H1... as they said) and the X-T4 was that hybrid that the X-T3 kinda wasn't. Now that the 5th gen has two awesome video centric bodies, I would have hoped for the X-T5 to be closer to a photographer's camera like the X-T3 is. Time will tell but my guess is I'm going to keep my X-T2 a few years more ;)

Thankfully the x-t5 is around the corner. I hope they further work on the ergonomics by making the x-t5 more compact and lighter
