After almost 10 months of using a pair of X-T5 cameras for my client and personal work, I've finally had a moment to put together a video about the camera. I didn't want to talk about all the technical specs because it's been done to death at this stage. This isn't a top-to-bottom review of the camera. What is in this review are the positives and pain points from my perspective of using the X-T5 day in and day out. It is as much a letter to Fujifilm as it is hopefully a starting point for discussion about the camera here. I hope that this is a helpful addition to the plethora of information out there about this camera.

Quite a few people seem to have strong feelings about my comment regarding the focus lever on this camera, so I 've created a quick video explaining it in further depth. Please watch before joining the trench warfare below. kzbin.info/www/bejne/kKqolKqkf9dkl9E

I have an XT5 and its factory default is as you describe for the XT-4. I can move the focus point around with the joystick and tap it to re-center. If you push and hold the joystick, it will pull a menu up to define what pushing the joystick does. Hit Reset to Center and you are good to go.

This is the best XT5 review on KZbin and I have watched all of them. As a XT5 user I can confirm all your mentioned points. Especially AF accuracy and resolution. I use several systems and the 40MP is the main reason why I use other brands more often. Give us a pixel binning feature like in the Leica Q3. No crop. Just a 24MP option. Better low light performance, smaller file size. Thank you again for this excellent review.

Indeed! This is actually the reason I now use X-H2S bodies. I really don't like them, but the resolution makes them better for my work. Pixel binning seems to be a feature that every other brand is able to offer in their high megapixel bodies, but Fujifilm seems to flat out refuse. Originally, I thought it might have been some limitation because of the X-Trans system, but they don't offer it in their Bayer array GFX system either, so maybe the engineers just don't see the need. A shame indeed.

Hi Dylan, Thanks for yet another awesome review. The slideshow proves once again that you are, to me at least, one of the best content creators on YT. I just bought my XT5 and so far I’m very happy with it. I haven’t dwelled enough yet in the menus and the customization, but your suggestions to Fujifilm seem very reasonable (who indeed needs a dedicated algorithm to make the focus on trains?) especially the one regarding the implementation of the 65:24 ratio in the X series which would be a must! At some point I even fathomed the idea of investing in the GFX system for it, but being a simple hobbyist, it would be ludicrous… I know you’re really not into post processing tutorials, but you are obviously so good at it that it would be awesome to see more content on this topic from you. Best regards from France !

No need to be the quickest to reviews, Dylan, this is really good stuff! ...which we often don't get from the quicker ones to it. And yes, please, to in-camera 65:24 ratio. By my quick and dirty algebra, it still gives 22MP!

Dylan, tks again for an excellent review. The main reason I continue to follow you (and few others) is your honest appraisals delivered without fear or favour (how refreshing!). The main reason I've avoided upgrading from my X-T1 is hearing about the X-T5's auto focus tracking issues, so I'm glad to hear there's been some improvement via firmware updates. Is this an Fujifilm weakness, because my XH-1 was always disappointing when shooting birds in flight or equestrian events?

Hi Dylan, excellent review, thank you! You really touched on a lot of valid points I am also excited about or slightly annoyed 🙂. Overall I really love the X-T5 though, coming from the T-2 and the T3. I am more of an enthusiastic hobbyist not using the camera for day-to-day pro-work. As I skipped the T-4, the Ibis (plus battery life) is a huge improvement I really like. The Ibis is great for landscape shots while hiking for me as it makes often a tripod use obsolete. I have a ‚small rig’ L-bracket all the time attached to the X-T5, which gives me a better grip while having the battery port accessible all the time. I’d say that I also do not really need the high resolution, but it’s nice to have and great for cropping e.g. into 16:9 in landscape . Let‘s hope we get some Kaizen on some of the points you mentioned.

Excellent review, Dylan as always! I have stayed with the X-T3 as it's an excellent stills camera for landscape and portrait. I have no need for 40MP or all of the fancy Ai stuff being pushed by the camera companies and I much prefer how the X-T3 feels in my hands than the smaller/lighter X-T5. Like you, what I would DEFINITELY appreciate is Fuji adding a simple ratio rule around the RAW image to indicate what the photographer saw when the content was created! I have no idea why this was not included on all of their "photography cameras." Having to shoot a JPG plus a RAW image wastes the photographer's processing time and unnecessarily fills up the hard drive space. Warmest regards from Raleigh, North Carolina USA!

Great and concise video, as always. I updated my PC hardware from a 12 to the high end 16 core Ryzen 9 with an high speed M2 ssd and +16 GB RAM + 16 TB HDDs to compensate the bigger file sizes (XH2, cf express only, Capture One). No performance issues anymore. A still annoying issue: eye AF / tracking doesn't work, if there are many faces around. Had no AF accuracy issues (XH2, XH2s)(XT5 is no option for me, too slow and complicated setup changes, much worse ergonomics and worse performance).

Thank you for the very nice and very lived video. You are among the few who have made a video "in the field" and who have seen the (many) strengths and flaws (few) of this camera. A personal negative judgment of mine is the 40mp sensor and the noise that is created over 1000 iso. It would be really great if you could reduce the sensibility to 24 or 26 mp! The XS10 has less !!! In fact, sometimes I choose to shoot again with the XS10 in low light. I agree with your comments on the video sector, I took the XT5 for its qualities in photography. Good job! Thank you.

Dylan, thanks for your impression and review. Have you considered using the Smallrig Lplate slash tripod plate? It's comfortable, enhances grip, and matches well color-wise while allowing easy access to the battery. Also, you can change the characteristic of the joystick, so it quickly centers. One nitpick I do have with the XT5 is that it scratched way too fast. I have the silver version, and it has plenty of scratches without heavy use.

I always enjoy watching your reviews, thank you Dylan! You praised the X-T5's ability to couple the autofocus point with the face detection mode to focus on one specific face in the frame. As an X-T5 user myself I frequently find the camera still detecting irrelevant faces in the background instead of the clearly dominant subject in the frame even if I put the focus box right on that specific face. In my experience, the camera overwrites the focus mode completely when face detection is enabled. If anybody knows a workaround, let me know!

Great review and great video. I bought the X-T4 when it was first launched several years ago and thought I had everything I needed. Since that day I have now sold it and downgraded to the X-H1 and X-Pro2. I'm happy with these two cameras although the (misplaced?) idea of extra megapixels and faster focusing is still nipping away at me! Maybe I'll take a closer look at the X-T5. Brilliant set of images at the end (love the wide/pano shot of the fishermen @19.14👍🏼).

Cheers! Appreciate you watching. Nothing misplaced about lusting over features that might benefit your work. They're just tools in the end, so if you like working with them and like the results, why not upgrade? That fisherman shot was from a cycling trip I did across Vietnam. Hard to miss in Vietnam. It's a wonderful place!

Thanks for a lot of great details about the Fujifilm XT5. Did not know that the resolution of still images could not be changed. It's new to me. Of course, it can be changed in a photo program, but it is always best if the recording is from the camera for the resolution you have chosen. My next camera will probably not be a Fujifilm XT5. Keeping my Fujifilm XT20 for now.

I can see how the centering thing can be annoying but for me I don’t mind how centering and scrolling focus areas works. I’d be interested to see your custom buttons and quick menus given you put so much use in both your XT5 cams. Edit: Oh you have a setup video I’ll be taking in immediately. 😅

Thank you for such a rational review. Yes (duh!) to 65:24. That is such a no-brainer for any of the Fuji 40 MP APS-C cameras. And because their native aspect ratio is wider than the GFX series, APS-C users would "lose" a smaller percentage of the original pixels compared to the GFX series. (I really need to do the actual math for this...) As for the X-T5's grip "topography", I also found it to be a little on the small size. I decided to get the Fujifilm base/grips and while that does increase the overall size and weight of the camera, when using lenses like the 8-16mm and 16-55mm things are just a little more secure and comfortable. Comparing the increased size to my former Nikon D500 (my favorite Nikon DSLR), the X-T5 still "wins". Buttons, menus, AF emphasis and all that other stuff you mentioned: Yes. Having had both, I think the X-T4 and the X-E4 both represent a period when Fujifilm was doing too much navel gazing and trying to please too many constituencies -- ending up disappointing more than they needed to. It was no sacrifice to trade away the X-T4 when I got a pair of X-T5s, and my X-E4 (an exercise in dumbing-down a camera) was replaced by an X-E3.

Hi Dylan, nice video as always. I have a question, I am a vintage lens user and I always use focus peaking, in the older generation, when I half press the shutter the focus peaking will turn off so I have a clean image to final check the composition before I take the photo. I found this really helpful, but in the newer bodies, this is gone and I can't seems to find it in the setting... do you know is there a way to set the camera to get this back or its gone gone... and yes the video setting displaying on the photo mode really make me think for multiple times that I was in the wrong mode, it's a bit silly now... i hope they change it back

Great, eye opening review. I had hoped to be able to replace my GFX with this camera. I really love the 56mm and yet something about the 110mm GF… is just more compelling. I for one am a rank amateur and am too busy with consulting practice to use gear enough to truly master its ins and outs. Having 64-25 aspect ratio is a no brainer. Yes want to see it. Having ability to shoot raw only and see desired aspect ratio. An equal no brainer. More separation of video and still. Another no brainer. Now on another subject: my main reason for having the GFX is to shoot architecture. I got the Cambo Actus but found it slower than an Arca Swiss film 69 camera. It also seemed to lack rigidity. So gave it up for canon TSE and Laowa shift lenses. Is it too niche, but why can’t we have a nice set of tse lenses for XT5??? I had tilt shift lens for Olympus OM-1 in 1978. I’d like to see the following tilt shift for XT5: 10mm 16mm 23mm 35mm 55mm I simply do not understand why we cannot have the capabilities we had in cameras built in the 1860s. You don’t know the power of Shifting the image and tilting the focus plane… with apologies to Darth Vader for using his line… Anyway, not perfect, but as you say: A great camera.
@DylanGoldbyPhotographer
@DylanGoldbyPhotographer 11 ай бұрын
Shift lenses are indeed a niche thing. There are a couple coming for the GFX system and if they sell well, you'll probably see more. Fujifilm may show a little love to the X system in that regard now that they have pretty much every other lens available, but I think you'd be more likely to see shift lenses on the X system from the likes of Laowa or another third-party manufacturer. Time will tell!

It is now my secondary camera to my GFX camera, but I really love it. As a hobbyist I'm still frustrated with my XT5 menu. Some of the AF settings are so intuitive. It's fantastic being able to prep every setting before turning the camera on with the dials, only to fumble with the AF trying to get it into the right mode. I guess I need to spend more time just going in and out of face detection, zones, etc. It all feels unnecessarily complicated. The Fuji colors are incredible, Viltrox is putting out the best glass and AF from a third party I've ever seen, but like you said Fuji needs to keep working on the UI and UX, and don't get me started on their new Fuji X app that requires location permissions just to open the app...

brilliant review and ALL your critique is valid throughout … I also don't understand why Fuji always change here & there for no-reasons … it's annoying and I know photographers changed back because of this to the "bigger" brands and … lately more often to Leica SL with an easier handling / interface (as they say … I personally can't judge) … But this ping-pong-changes in every generation cost confidence and turnover Fuji! They gave us a few random options for autofocus blur to keep us on our toes, but not for raw file res :)😂 I still shoot my X-T2 because I didn’t get quite the camera I wanted yet. For me, slightly larger body and deeper handgrip, same X-T5 back tilt screen, X-H2 higher resolution UVF, X-T5/X-H2 current battery, sensor and processor, same X-T5 dual card slots… plus all the things you mention! :) Definitely the compactness of the X-T5 puts me off. Perhaps X-T6 is a sweet spot… maybe also a Nikon Rf style PASM switch too! Then I’ll jump

When a hybrid photographer is taking pictures in a wedding they might be thinking do I have enough space for capture a video clip. So having a video capacity displayed while taking pictures was one of the most requested and kudos to Fujifilm for implementing that. Quick menu left tile was the same as well. Some of the features and decisions that Fuji made to keep this camera small are commendable like taking out the option for battery grip, full size hdmi port etc as they make the camera size larger with additional components. It is a portable photography first camera. If someone is seeking full options camera , then X-H2 is the one to go with.

@@DylanGoldbyPhotographer The X-T5 features great, modern hardware, while the software is left behind, "in legacy mode". An overhaul is due :) The issue might be that the person in charge of the software is in that position for a long long time, as japanese people usually stick to a single position for life, and he won't give up his philosophy of how should a camera menu and underlying software be.

The amount of times I've considered jumping ship is ridiculous. In the end, the only reason I'm still a Fujifilm user is because of the colours. I am a non-prof photographer just do it as a passion but also sometimes have little jobs (family or maternity shoots lately). One thing which me bothers since the first Fuji camera from the X series is the fact that the on/off button is so easy going. I mean that it happens all the time that when I put my camera in my bag (on my way to a shoot or also while doing streetphotography walks), accidentally the button switches to on, so that when I arrive at my shoot location, the battery has drown. Is anyone else here (whatever version of the X series you own) is having similar problems? And is it improved on the XT5? It's only that I sometimes think: Maybe for my jobs I should get a more reliable model of another brand. Thanks for your comments. And also of course for the profound video.

I'm 95% sure I can double tap the joystick to recentre the focus point. I don't have my camera on me, but I can see page 87 of the manual shows you how to press the joystick to "select centre focus point". Mine is fitted with a Small Rig L Bracket that would solve two of your issues at once - giving you a bigger grip and a tripod slide that doesn't block the battery hatch.

Great review as always! I can finally use my 56 1.2 again. 🤙 As far as resetting the focus point, I saw a video that shows how to do that instantaneously like the old XT4. I just can’t remember how it was done, but it’s out there. I don’t use the eye/face focus at all, as I prefer shooting without it. Especially when doing street photography. And yes, as a photographer, who doesn’t ever use video, why did they put video selections into the stills selector ? 🙈

Great video and as a long term 1 X-T5 owner myself I agree with all you observations. Yes please to 65:24. Yes please to returning to the old focus stick behaviour. And one further thing - why do the custom modes now affect both film sims and autofocus behaviours? If you only shoot raws it may not be an issue but a huge number of Fuji shooters love film recipes. This is a unique differentiator of Fujifilm and something a rich community has mobilised around. In earlier cameras you could set a visual style without it affecting the behaviour of the camera. With the X-T5 if I now use a custom mode to set a film recipe it changes not only the look of the image but also the behaviour of things like autofocus. Why? I should be able to change recipe without affecting camera operation. A big misstep for no obvious benefit
@DylanGoldbyPhotographer
@DylanGoldbyPhotographer 11 ай бұрын
Interesting! I've seen these recipe communities around with all sorts of interesting sets of adjustments to jpeg files. As a raw shooter, I would love to see the whole camera's operation be able to be saved in a custom setting, but that might really affect a lot of people, as you say! Perhaps there's a way to create a separation for just jpeg recipies, but allow customisation of the rest of the camera in another mode. Hopefully, Fujifilm will pay attention to this!

@@DylanGoldbyPhotographer I’m a raw+jpeg guy myself - fundamentally I process all my taws but one of the things I love about Fuji is that I can share instantly from the camera in so many ways, with a look which is 80-90% of what I want. This seems to be a growing trend and an area where Fuji has a real advantage over other camera manufacturers. I’d love them to lean in to that even more. Think about all the YT influencers who sell Lightroom present packs - what if they could sell their looks as film simulations for Fuji cameras? That sort of thing would be a win for consumers but would also be a smart marketing ploy by Fuji to get influencers selling a positive message about Fuji cameras rather than always banging on about the APS-C sensor size. Part of the current viral interest in Fuji comes from the ability to achieve interesting looks in camera. Anything which limits that bustling community is a serious mistake

I want the metering-mode dial back from the X-T3 and before! That is for me much more important than the film/photo switch for "photography first". Movie mode can still be done via the drive mode dial, right? About the 1st tile in the Q menu, that makes sense on their cameras with PASM dial when you're in a custom mode on the dial, like "C1", "C2", etc. Then you cannot see if that is "M", "A", etc and you need a way to change it. On the X-T series cameras, no that doesn't make sense!

I hope one thing: that Fujifilm reads this review and acts upon it. With the possible software updates this can be an almost perfect camera. And let's hope that the next hardware iteration gets the autofocus on Canon/Sony level, together with larger buffer. Small raw files are key for a 40MB sensor. And why not explore the route of the Leica Q3, that makes use of a user friendly digital zoom to extend the possibilities of our primes. With 40 MB Fuji could explore this. And yes: Fujifilm and other camera manufacturers really should start to make work the possibilities of all forms of computational photography to stay ahead of smartphones on all fronts, in stead of lagging behind. Personally - being a Canon shooter - I started not so long ago to work with an XT-1 to get fully acquainted with the Fuji ecosystem, working with vintage lenses, a cheap TT artisan 25 f2 manual focus lens and a Fringer pro III to work with my Canon lenses. I really adore the XT- concept and will wait to get my hands on the XT-6. Subscribed to your channel. The way you articulate your video is very useful and inspiring.

I don’t personally think I need the 40mp so I had been considering the XH2S to get the improved focus and the lower res. Do you find the low light performance compromised by the significant bump in mp or does that clean up in post well enough? What is the highest ISO you would find good enough for the paid work you do? I would have been thrilled with the xh2s sensor in an xt5 or XPro body.

I'm sure more critical users who zoom in and look around might find fault with it, but my clients still only use web resolution images for the most part. Anyone who is using high resolution images on my end isn't having their session in poorly lit situations. In short, no, I haven't noticed a difference.

for me, this camera is just a pain. I clearly made a wrong choice. The choice was: save up/swallow the cost of x-pro3 with it's older sensor etc... or just buy x-t5. Went with the latter as it felt 'future-proof' - newest sensor, all firmware bells and whistles... but in terms of user interface, it's HORRIBLE. Too many toggles, too many buttons and the toggles are badly designed - what should happening is - the most commonly used options should be at the extreme ends so by a quick swipe of the thumb one can switch from single to continuous shooting, leaving all the fancy useless crap (like hdr) somewhere in the middle. that switch flips uncontrollably in my bag so every time I take the camera out, I need to make sure it's in single mode, to avoid losing frames because 'the camera does something weird'. Video? Used it once to test and never switch it on again. It's a photo camera, not handycam - I HATE how youtubers ruined photo market by insisting that every camera is video camera. If I don't get use to those quirks fast enough, I'll probably sell it and buy a second-hand x-pro3

Thanks for watching and sharing all the details about your wants. The 40MP sensor of the T5 or H2 don't NEED any specific lenses. What Fujifilm means with that list is that you will see IMPOROVED resolution by using those lenses. Other lenses will resolve as they always have, but things like chromatic aberration may be a little more prominent with the increased resolution. I'd say don't overthink it. Get the body you want and pair it with any lens that fits the way you shoot. Unless you're zooming in to 100% or printing 80 inch prints to examine under a loupe, it won't matter! Enjoy whatever you end up deciding on!
