Sold my Leica Q2 for the XT5 + 23mm 1.4 WR, and so far the only things I miss about the Q2 are the slightly smaller size and the slightly better feeling buttons. Other than that, nothing! Which to me says a lot. Such a wonderfully designed camera 😊

There’s a fix for the face detect thing, but it’s obscure (had to read the manual) In AF-S: set focus mode to Wide or the tilt function on the stick to “Direct AF Point Selection”. In AF-C: it’ll lock on to the closest thing near your focus point (you had it in zone, try spot). the joystick tilt map should still work too, haven’t personally tried.

Excellent? I enjoyed your review you covered a lot of the major points about the XT5. I have the XT3 w/18-55mm and I love the combo which makes it easy for a walk around and the range. I would like to add the XT5 one day as I wait for the cost to come down while I enjoy shooting with the XT3. Thank you.

About focussing on people in the background mentioned around 15mins in, I've found it works well for me to be in: - AFC - Eye auto focus on - Wide/tracking, instead of zone In this setup you get the little box you can put on your subject you want to focus on, so it won't swap to other people entering the scene.

I love the contrast on this lens. It was not even on my list after owning the 56mm for so long, but I saw a used one at a great price and grabbed it, and wow. It's one of my most 3 used lenses and I have 11 fujinon lenses at this point. I barely use the 56, only for studio work and even then Id use the 90mm f2 if I had the room.

Cheers for a fantastically informative video, Gareth. I have a Nikon Z7ii and Nikon Zfc (for my street photography). The Z7ii is a bit big and heavy to tote around town all day, but the Zfc isn't quite what I want either (small res. sensor, flippy-out screen, only a few decent lenses, no IBIS, low dynamic range, etc.) so I was looking to get a Leica Q3 instead. After a lot of deliberation, and several nightmares about the cost, (plus the fact that there are none to be had anywhere) I finally decided on a Fujifilm X-T5 for my everyday use (keeping the Z7ii for special occasions). I confess, I previously knew little or nothing about the Fuji system but, thanks to in-depth videos like yours, I now feel it's the camera for me. So, I just wanted to say thanks again for helping me embarque on an exciting new photo adventure. Cheers, Mate.

I absolutely love my X-T5. It has officially dethroned the X-T1 as my favorite camera of all time. The only issue I have is that my copy of the camera has an exposure compensation dial that was incorrectly installed so it always appears to be in between stops which drives me crazy. I agree the EVF could be better but its good enough for me.

@TylerAldrich
@TylerAldrich Жыл бұрын
@@michaelb9940 depends on what you like to shoot. I personally prefer primes and dislike zooms. Some people prefer the opposite. The 18-55 is great for traveling/vacation because you can shoot wide and zoom with one lens. If you enjoy a specific focal length and prefer to shoot at that length than absolutely getting the prime is worth it.

@@michaelb9940 The 35 f2 is significantly smaller and a bit faster than the equivalent 35mm on the Fuji 18-55. So if those two things are important to you, it might be worth it. The only advantage the 18-55 has besides being a zoom, is that it has decent OIS. For me, I like to have a set of faster primes to accompany my zooms, but your mileage may vary.

While I'm not at your level, I do shoot professionally as well in different capacity and I also do a lot of landscapes and I've been using a Nikon D850 camera now for probably about six years. I recently purchased a Fuji film XT5 and I say recently, probably about the same time you did maybe about a month after and I can honestly say I am blown away. How could this camera is? There are a couple of things that I would definitely like change, but overall if I was to give it a score out of 10, I'm giving it nine point 5 out of 10 Because no camera is perfect but the images that I can produce with this camera are mind blowing. I have said if you cannot produce good photos with a XT5 it's time for a different hobby. It is honestly that good and it's relatively simple to use. I've also compare the files from the Fuji camera to the Nikon camera on the same settings at the same site now. Obviously a different lens, but a very similar lens, wide-angle lens, shooting landscapes and looking at the detail of the dynamic range. The colours and everything else and I can honestly say without hand on heart the Nikon D8 50 is one of the best cameras ever made. But the Fujifilm xt5 holds its own against this in terms of what it can do, and so much more, because it is Mirrorless and it is lighter to carry. I'm probably only using the Nikon now for sports photography, as I don't really have a big lens for the Fiji, even though I do have the adapter and I can use my Nikon lenses on my Fuji, but I still prefer the Nikon for sports but honestly my views are the same as yours and it is just a simply outstanding camera and I think it's really a photography first camera yep and it still does very very decent video so I like the fact that they made a photography first camera. I purchased the 8 to 16 mm wide angle lens for my epic landscapes and oh my goodness this lens on the XT5 is ridiculous. It is so sharp it is so good in fact I've often had to reduce sharpening in images as I said to a made it so sharp. It is sharp as any prime in the Fuji film range and I took a bit of a punt on this lens because I do like using filters to do long exposures and moody sunset and moody lighting shots, but oh my goodness it's a great set up now. I have some other lenses as well. Yeah, I still shoot uncompressed raw because I like to get the best image quality I possibly can. the VILTROX 75. Will be absolutely epic. I've watched a lot of videos on that lands and I'm looking at getting that lens for portraits and also for landscape photography and general photography as well. I think of plenty of applications for 112 mm focal length. That is my next purchased. I could not imagine leaving Fuji film ever. I think I'm 53 now and I'm all in. I tried my XT5 with some motorsport, speedway photography. It wasn't bad but 100% correct mate. The buffer was a bit of an issue. I thought it might of been that I needed a faster card then I tried a really fast card and it still wasn't great, but you know what I don't think Fuji film is ever been aimed at the sport shooting market. Thank you for your videos always enjoy them. Yes, I did find the cable release contact to be annoying Oneal bracket I did figure a way out of it which really is just in when I'm in L bracket mode and I want to shoot up right I just have to use the touchscreen and use time a delay which is fine. I just do a two second delay to make sure there's no camera movement but other than that I can't really fault the camera it's a pity they don't make a Bluetooth remote for this camera and maybe they do maybe there's a Bluetooth one that you can buy that doesn't have to plug into the side of the camera for a cable release. I will do some investigating onto that

Good review, thanks. I've had an X-T5 (after an X-T2) since November. Generally very happy with it for the reasons you give. Completely agree with your comment about the position of the cable release port. I find the auto white balance and auto exposure settings a bit unreliable (but fixable in raw). To make continuous AF more "sticky", you may have to experiment with the AF-C CUSTOM SETTINGS in the AF/MF menu.

@@michaelb9940 Not sure who you're asking. Gareth likes Your straightforward way of talking about the experiences of using the camera!! Have Fuji XT-20, bought used in 2018 with 18-55 lens, and enjoy using it. At some point I'm considering a version with newer technology. Especially autofocus in portrait photography is not so good. In other situations, I use pixel peaking, which is an absolutely good way to focus with the camera. Have a nice day.

I’ve been a Fujifilm user since the X-Pro 1 having had a variety of x-series cameras, such as the X-T1 and the XF10 too. Now, I only own the X100V from Fuji as the XF10 was replaced by the GRIIIX, the X-T1 having been replaced by the X100V. I added a month or so ago, the Sony @7 3 to my arsenal partly because it is a full frame sensor (something I’ve been wanting for as long as I can remember) but also because it was around seven hundred pounds less expensive than the X-T5 I wanted to have. At around two and a half grand for the X-T5 and kit zoom lens, Fujifilm has priced me out of the X-T range and possibly even out of the X100 range too as I suspect the next X100 camera will be even more expensive than the current camera (if you can find one). PS I nearly sold my X100V to let me get the Sony @7 IV (the price point as the X-T5 with kit lens) but I couldn’t let go of that camera… I treasure it that much.

Great video Gareth, your down-to-earth style is easy to like. Quick question: do you miss the photometry dial location as per X-T3? I shoot absolutely zero video, and was happy for that mode to be presented as part of the drive dial, but I do change the photometry setting now and then and not only miss having that as a hardware button. I can’t even seem to assign it to a function button - having it replace the ‘boost’ function would be ideal.

Megapixels don’t actually affect noise for photos. It looks worse if you zoom in to 100%, but that’s because you’re looking at it much closer. When you scale them to the same size, the noise gets smushed together. You have more headroom for noise reduction too. I think the misconception that low megapixel cameras are better in low light comes from video, where it really is true. The A7s is way, way better in low light than the A7r because of the processing. Being 12mp allowed for full sensor readout, where the higher resolution cameras either had to crop or pixel bin.

Yes, Sony surpassed competition at its price point. That Fuji is in Full Frame territory, both cameras and lenses price wise. @@michaelb9940 I've never tried a 35mm (or 33mm) lens. All I can say is that I felt the fairly urgent need to upgrade my 18-55 and got the 16-55, which isn't even a proper prime lens (it's a zoom that comes close) but still felt sharper and easier to use. I think the 33mm f1.4 prime sounds excellent if you can afford it, but of course the 35mm also good. Great Video. I have been using Nikon SLRs and DSLRs forever. However as I get older, I find it cumbersome to carry around the weight of the Nikon Full Frame system. I want to go to smaller and lighter equipment. Your videos have helped me decide to jump into the Fuji ecosystem. Next week I am going to depart with my Beloved D700 and my D850 and jump completely into Fuji. My biggest decision right now is whether I want the Silver or Black X-T5. Thanks again for you honest videos.

I really wish I hadn't seen this. I was wondering if an XT5 would be a nice upgrade from my XT3 (I can't afford it, but it's never stopped me in the past!) and now you've basically confirmed that it would be a great upgrade for me. Of course it won't make me a better photographer, but clearly it does offer some useful benefits and now I'm left wondering how I can get round the wife to get one of these! I think I need anti-retail therapy!

I still love my XT3 better in many ways. For photographing birds in the woods, I have a lot more noise on high ISOs on the XT5. I feel like the XT5 is also more sensitive to focusing using the 400mm lens on a sunny day. I can get sharper shots of birds with different environmental factors like heat/humidity with my XT3.

@@donnamunn4941 I bit the bullet and got the XT5 and for what I do - mainly street photography - I'm liking it a lot. The focus with an 18-55 kit lens definitely seems snappier and more positive and I'm liking the extra resolution. Now I just have to work on taking photos that are actually worth taking! 😁

I use my X-T5 for a lot of sports photography. Using the AF-C, it will follow the subject you originally focused on, even if someone steps in front, and continue to follow your original subject. It works quite well. I moved up from my X-T2 to the new 5 and love it for sports.

@@GarethDanks I might be full of shit, but I'm wondering if your issue with autofocus stickiness is an issue with your AF-C custom settings. It seems like it might be a part of it, because those settings include the ability to select how sticky your autofocus is once it's locked onto a subject.

Still use my Z7 II [Nikon now for donkeys years] and jumped right into X-T5. Needed something different and like it very much. Menu has taken a bit to get used to, but almost there now. Got some good shots today out and about. NOW my biggest problem is - I love photo merging images in Lrc or Ps to form panoramic . BUT? with x-t5 I cannot get the single focus point to stay where I want it (portrait and center) to permit same focus area as I pan to get shots for merging. The single point focus often refuses to move, jumps upper left a lot of the time. Can you please possibly advise… Loved content here and a few others on your channel - you deserve my subscription and a LIKE - done…

It is a bit of a dog compared to other Fuji lenses - which is to say it's not BAD, just nowhere near the heights of other lenses. Chonky old lens, *lots* of image corrections due to lens distortion results in a lot of softness throughout the image. Probably the worst received lens I can think of since I've been with Fuji (x-t2/2017). I had it briefly and sold it - but used it in a camera shop yesterday and was amused to see the lens distortion in real time flicking from stills (corrected) to movie mode (uncorrected)

I was wondering why he said that as well, I bought the 16-80 about 6 months ago and it's quite capable for my usage which I shoot landscapes basically and don't shoot video so tye f4 is not an issue for me personally and I do find the image stabilization to be a true benefit on my XT-3

That's not a cable release, in the side of the camera: the "cable release" is in the shutter release, as of old.

With new 56wr I will say my hit rate on XT3 is improving by using CH high, electronic shutter @20fps, single point, and AF-C. I also tried pre-shot which is awesome if you don’t mind doing a lot of culling later. The thing is, and maybe this seems obvious, but the 56 is too slow once the subject is closing in on the MFD. For little kids, that’s been something close to full body/torso in the frame. I also shut off exposure preview which seems to help. I was ready to write this lens off until I decided to treat it like a sports/action lens and kids like world class atheletes 😂. Short high speed bursts are tending to return me more candidates than low speed bursts in similar conditions. Also I turn eye detect on/off when I feel like but find it typically not helpful. Af-S has been generally accurate and quick but obviously if subjects aren’t holding still it’s still a challenge. Indoors/flash I can’t get the frame rate up super high but again, some distance to the subject helps a lot.

@@GarethDanks I don't disagree. But in my case short high speed bursts are helping a lot - I prefer having 4-5 candidates out of 10-20 shots to having 0. Clearly the latency between my seeing the shot, attempting to acquire focus, and hitting the shutter has also been hurting my success. But its almost like putting the XT3 in CH really does put it into the next gear.

@@GarethDanks Opps! I didn't mean to imply that I'm only getting 4-5 out of 20 shots in focus. I just meant candidates - in-focus or nearly-perfect-focus shots I'd actually want to use in a given set of 10-20. I'll consider counting up a few shots of moving/still subjects and see what it ended up being in terms of hit rate.

I think you can go into your AFC custom settings and play with the sensitivity settings. You should be able change how easily the focus point jumps to another subject by reducing the sensitivity. Hope this helps!

People seems or seemed to struggle with Autofocus -C (continous) with X-T5 but You can customize a lot regarding tracking of various objects, so probably many situations can be handeled just fine. Some cameras I have read has wonderful autofocus capabilites like A1 and Z9 but it is in another leage of cameras. I have X-T5 and XF 16-55mm f2.8 zoomlens and I find this combination a rather good alrounder. But I shoot most stationary objects so I can not tell really of AF-C how good it can be at various and more demanding situations. I use mostlyfocus mode Manual and I set F, ISO, Shutterspeed manually, and I use Back button focus and it works mostly just fine for stills. I use latest firmware 1.04 for X-T5 and 1.20 for my lens.
