I love that you took the time to post an addendum to the original video. This is very helpful to know as an X-T5 owner. I rarely use high continuous because it produces SO many images, but it's helpful to know the limitations of the system. I wonder if future firmware updates may improve some of these scenarios over time.

Very many thanks for sticking with this and showing us the contrast between tracking with and without face/eye turned on. I tried shooting without burst mode but with face/eye turned on, just hitting the shutter release rapidly as somebody came towards me. My hit rate varied between 10% and 50%, but rarely more. I consider this downright poor. I will try tracking without face/eye, but I consider the face/eye option one of the main reasons for upgrading to this camera (at least, I thought it was!). Another issue that I would welcome advice on is my experience with the two Fuji batteries I use. Even though I rarely shoot more than 300-400 pictures in a day, my battery was depleted by the end of each day's shooting and once I had to put in the spare. I use boost mode all the time, but to save battery I switch off the camera when I'm not taking pictures. My X-T30 turned in a better performance.

Thanks for being responsive to suggestions by your viewers and taking the time to test their suggestions and reporting back. Some here have commented on Fuji's AF compared to Sony. As you pointed out, Sony is better in some but not all instances. I'm glad Fuji is getting better, but AF speed is only one of a number of features that I compare. My shooting style and subject interest normally doesn't require blazing AF speed and spot on subject tracking. I've gotten what I consider acceptable results for bird in flight photos from my H1 and actually I love shooting MF with vintage lenses on my E1! Keep up the good work and stay warm!

Thanks for your kind words and interesting comments. Yes, focus speed certainly should not be the only consideration and familiarity with your camera gear counts for a lot.

Excellent update. Personally, I do not use eye detect on my XT5, preferring to use the good-old-way of placing a single box on the subject and following it myself. I acknowledge this takes practice. This is the method I use at polo matches following horses galloping up to 25 MPH and for my daughter's cycle racing and son's kite surfing, all of which work just fine with the right Custom 6 settings. Thanks to taking the trouble to respond to feedback - appreciated.

Yes, photographers were able to successfully take in focus images of moving subjects long before tracking and face detection. Thanks for commenting.

Thanks for doing this Maarten, finally the issue is resolved!! Fuji may well fix this in a future update to allow face/eye detect to be on at the same time

Resolved in that we know what the conditions are to repeat it and avoid it. Not solved though.

Your video's have been helpful in my decision as I navigate what to upgrade to. Recently sold my D700 to upgrade to something more modern for media storage and wireless connectivity. I like a lot of things about fuji and I like the smaller camera and lens sizes.

Thanks Maarten! I knew it had something to do with the AI looking for an actual face and/or eye. Having used both old and new Fujifilm cameras, the AF is phenomenal. Does exactly what it should.

@@MaartenHeilbron It has for me. I have no complaints. With subject detection off, it still performs better than the X-T3, but again the tracking settings must approximate the photography subject. With subject detection on, I have had very clear people, birds, and dogs. With the XT3 and birds in particular, I found I had to switch frequently between spot focus and manual. I can track birds much more confidently now.

So AF is still behaving in the same way as with my old X-E3. When eye-AF turned off and using 3x3 zone area then hit rate is much much better. With eye-AF turned on system is constantly looking for faces/eyes and it seems that it takes too much power from Fuji resulting in poor hit rate.

1. Make sure setting the Release/Focus priority is set to Focus. 2. AF+MF setting turn Off. 3. Don't use face/eye detect, just the Zone focus and green square over subject. Then when tracking subjects in af-c and burst mode... keeper rate above 94% wow what a difference.
@MaartenHeilbron Жыл бұрын
Good tips, thanks!

What about eye-AF without tracking a subject? Would it constantly stick on the eye then? Because then the issue is not that critical and you should be aware of your tracking method. What if the train has no puppet on it? I won't spot an eye then so tracking should not be discontinued. This does not look like a hardware issue but rather an algorithm issue to me. But then, why would the algorithm be different on the X-H2?
@MaartenHeilbron Жыл бұрын
That's the question that puzzled me. I will try without the figure.
@karlbratby4349 Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for this update... but it's still an issue to most who want to use AF-c tracking of say a subject and that subject is a person, or maybe a bride and groom walking the isle and you cant get accurate results when using face/eye detect in C-AF tracking in burst mode although maybe not in the high setting. Fuji needs to surely sort this as far as I'm aware it does not happen on the Xh2 or Xh2s.
@MaartenHeilbron Жыл бұрын
Yes, workaround, not a solution. I'm puzzled as to why I didn't have this issue on the X-H2 under similar circumstances.

I don't understand. There is no face in the images. Face detection uses AI that was trained on actual human faces, and not on plastic toys. This is actually a convoluted way to confuse it as it can sometimes mistake it for a face and sometimes will not.
@MaartenHeilbron Жыл бұрын
Thanks, but that does not explain the ridiculous lack of focus in the X-T5 performance video that was not seen in my similar video of the X-H2. And that it happens only while actually taking photos is particularly worrisome.
@catherinegrimes2308 Жыл бұрын
Well done!!! Quite a few people have had problems with tracking with the X-T5 and the X-H2. This has been examined by Jerred Z and one of his videos can be found at: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qp_EfIR6grJnos0 Some people have improved the keeper rate by setting the Release/Focus priority to Focus.
@MaartenHeilbron Жыл бұрын
Interesting video, yes, those are similar to the results I would expect. Yes, Focus Priority would improve focus at the expense of burst speed - but what good is fast burst if the images aren't in focus?
@catherinegrimes2308 Жыл бұрын
@@MaartenHeilbron I agree with you. It has reached the point where some people think it is worthwhile using Focus Priority because the keeper rate is higher. On looking at the comments in video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/npfNgWSamaibl9k Somebody claims that the camera focuses on the eyebrows. Some people recommend turning off AF + MF. Even if these settings work, the camera should come with a working set of settings.

As a Fuji and Sony shooter, got to be said, Fuji are still not there with autofocus. Disappointing. Getting there but still a couple of generations behind Sony.
@MaartenHeilbron Жыл бұрын
I agree, but only for some things. For instance, Sony isn't able to track the train as consistently as Fujifilm - always a few dropped images, and (once I turned off face/eye) here, none.
