Hi, I am totally new to the photography as I used to enjoy taking photographs by mobile. Am planning to move form mobile to this Sony a6100 model. my main concern is that, as I am living in Finland and it is almost 4-5 months of snow. Does the harsh weather matters for this camera even if I take good care for this one? Or is there any tips about taking care of the camera from the cold and snowy weather of Finland?
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 14 сағат бұрын
Although cameras are generally rated to -10, as long as they are treated with care, you should not have issues. My recommendation is to buy an extra battery or two as they run down more quickly in cold weather; to purchase a microfibre cleaning/drying cloth and when you're not using it to keep it in a camera bag. One of those small rechargeable hand warmers in the bag could be helpful - both for the camera and your hands.

You were and always will be the best reviewer out there, Maarten! I hope you are happy and healthy and having fun! (I sold off lots of gear, including my X-S10 and just picked up the X-S20 - after vacillating between X-T5, X-T50 and X-S20 - with the new 16-50 so am re-watching your excellent review). Thank you for all of your good work!

Hi Maarten, even if this video is quite old, I still own my D850. Unfortunately the video AF is completely not usable, in my opinion ... Do you have suggestions to make it work? I think this camera is not discontinued, so I ask myself if there will ever be a firmware to fix this huge af bug .. in my mind the answer is "no" .. and in your? 😊 Thanks Andrea fm Italy 🇮🇹☺️
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 3 күн бұрын
I don't own a D850, so have no information about firmware updates. If one is available, I would suggest your upgrade. As for AF in video, the D850, as many DLSRs the AF is not really suitable for video. I recommend that, as long as your subject is a constant distance from the camera, that you use manual focus. Please say hello to all my friends in Italy.

This is sad news for we who require in-depth plain language information that even a photo dummy like myself can understand... The photo review world will be a smaller place without you in it. Yes I am being selfish! I do understand all your reasons and find I have no answer to any of them. So many worthwhile things these days are going by the wayside, family units are weaker as parents work longer hours and spend less time encouraging their children... just to name one of so many things. I do hope you are proud of what you have given the newbies of this craft, the reviews I have watched have captivated, and educated like few others have managed. In short THANK YOU for being here when your insight was needed, joy to you ever more and a Very Merry Christmas, hoping the New Year brings good things to you and yours. Here in New Zealand there is a small light beginning to grow and that is a return to analogue film.... so do not despair that photography will go by the way of the Mammoth and sabretooth tiger many a fire begins from the smallest spark.....

Thanks once again Maarten, this series part 1 and 2 are the most understandable explanations of these mystifying terms for we who are beginning our journey into artful time capture. Im probably a minority but I greatly pefer full size integrated vertical grip pro bodies. I was very disappointed to see the GFX 100 II lost the grip and went with a Frankenstein design. It's not really small like a 100S, but also not a full size pro body with a grip. The latter could have had a bigger or dual battery, and probably room for 2 CF express type B slots. Likely a package not that much bigger than what we got. Something that could have a grip while still being slightly smaller and lighter than the GFX 100. Like maybe Z9ish sized. Sure you can add a grip but that makes the camera even bigger than a GFX 100 and does nothing for the slow SD slot. Again I'm probably in the minority but I also really dislike the removal of the dedicated AC power port so in the studio you can tether and keep the camera plugged in at the ame time. That way you don't have to chose between tethering or not having to worry about batteries or bumping the camera out of alignment slightly while changing them. Imo because of the AC power port and same IQ as the GFX 100 II, the original GFX 100 is still the best studio camera in existence for stills other than a Phase One IQ4 system.

@MaartenHeilbron "Properly designed" means slide :) I have well built cameras where things just wear. For instance, an EOS R that I have to pry the door open because it won't pop open when unlatched. A sliding door would be nice there. I would like to think Canon did a lot thinking about the design of their camera, even though I have few questions about design choices.

Nice information - I summarized it here so when I come back to it I can skip a second watch! 🙂 I set up stills to record as raw plus JPEG and video as X AVC s 4k 30p 100 megabits I set up the shutter button to record video when the cameras in video mode video and 160th requires me to use manual settings for shutter and aperture in video mode but with auto ISO to simplify the adjustments was often shooting video at f11 or higher with the ISO at 100 I judged exposure primarily with the screen aided by the meter and the histogram but still felt that some of my video scenes ended up overexposed front switch makes switching modes easy but it is possible to leave the switch at s or DMF for single as the four switches do continuous when video is selected for portraits i configured the lenses focus hold button as iaf panorama which I configured to shoot wide with the direction down and this provides a larger panorama the rx10 4 has five meter modes and I found the highlight setting to be useful for reading the correct exposure when taking photos of stained glass windows Sony's HDR mode which can capture a 6 stop range is very useful particularly when the Sun isn't quite in the right spot when you get to a landmark workaround for switching out of raw and into HDR is to assign quality to the c2 by and to set up the auto HDR at for Eevee although there were times when I increased it to 6 when the 4 is in raw plus JPEG the HDR is automatically disabled when raw is deselected HDR zone again I tried to use it the powerful continuous mode takes up to 24 images per second I set the auto ISO maximum to 6400 and when I look at the photos which were taken at 6400 that may have been conservative these turned out nicely there's ad hoc Wi-Fi to transfer photos to my phone it requires the free PlayMemories app which transfers and saves them so I can post them to Instagram I did create a my menu with format and the other settings that I adjusted frequently battery life was better than I expected I brought four but never used more than one and a bit

Te sensor size is the same, so quality will not change dramatically. Yes, focus will be better and faster (not quite as good as Sony's latest - but this isn't Fujifilm's latest either). Either camerra could benefit from better lenses, although it's true that Fujifilm's best crop lenses are better thank Sony.

8th December 2024 Hi Maarten. It is seven years since you posted this review and I think it will still be seen as a good review in seven years time. I received it as a gift in June of this year and have been using it as an everyday carry. It has been quite a revelation on all levels and this review was very helpful when I first got it and I still refer to it now and again. I use Nikon DSLR's, but as a result of using the panasonic system, I have decided to stay with them next year and get the Lumix S5ii instead of the Nikon Zf. Regards from London and enjoy the rest of your weekend.

The Fujifilm X100 series remind me of my Yashica 35 Astro film rangefinder cameras. I really like the X100S, the leaf shutter and easy to use high speed flash sync are my favorite features, I've been waiting since March for my x100VI. Fuji cameras are so popular right now, many, like the X-E4 cost 20-30% higher used than they cost retail when released.

The main misconception about this camera is that it’s a d7200 successor. But it’s not! D7200’s successor is D500. And 7500 being a d5600 step-up. Or the D90’s successor. If you look at it from that angle it all comes obvious. It’s just Nikon being Nikon;)
@MaartenHeilbron

Love this video and all of your videos,thank you! With regard to focus, I wonder if you might recommend the Fuji 18-55 mm kit lens as being a good option. I’m almost exclusively interested in shooting video. I’m considering this lens for my Fuji XS10 as I’m shooting films and I have some budgetary limits. My current 35mm simply will not stop breathing and focus hunting, so it’s unreliable. Would you recommend the 18-55mm for my Fuji XS10? Thx!!
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 23 күн бұрын
If the issue is focus breathing, I would use manual focus. Unless your camera to subject distance is changing, that's far more reliable. The kit lens is a good option, the 16-55 (just refreshed, but havne't tried the new one) is better.
