Although sometimes I am a bit jealous about some photos taken with X100V, whenever I see the camera itself in real, I am so glad to have a GR III. It has been my extended eye because of its' pocketability.

Good comparison. I just purchased the Ricoh last week. My primary reason is that in the U.S. the X100V has been on backorder for at least a year. Same for the XE4. I already have a collection of Fuji bodies and glass so I do not feel like I gave up much. Plus I gained portability.

Hi Cris. Great comparison. I fully agree with you. I own both cameras as well. For me every aspect of shooting with the X100V is so enjoyable. But the portability of the GRIII Street Edition is excellent which makes it an perfect edc camera taking the picture quality into account. Owning both is a lovely.

I think the price difference fact relates to the tilting screen, the OVF/EVF and hybrid viewfinder, the built-in flash, the lcd resolution, the microphone port, the wider aperture, Bluetooth, the battery life (420 vs 200), fps speed (30) and max video resolution. Plus weather sealing always makes cameras more expensive. Like you said before, these cameras belong to different segments.

Hello Abelardo, thanks a lot for your feedback and yes, you got all the points right there! If you take into account that the optional viewfinder for the Ricoh alone costs 250$ you can see that Fuji ain't a bad deal and that it has a lot to offer. Take care

A Friend of mine gave me the GRIII for a weekend as I was complaining that I can’t use all my nice cameras so often anymore since my second kid was born. I have a Leica SL-2S, Leica M2, Hasselblad X-pan, Hasselblad 500cm. All this beautiful cameras take time and effort to be operated. If you need a quick one hand operable camera, you will give a sh.. about the beauty of the x100v. This is all just for some latte macchiato beside my camera instagram victims. And by the way. The GR has film simulations and there are people even creating their own recipes for the GR. There is also a tele converter lens for the GR available, as well as other accessories. This is something I found out over my two day testing, so don’t know how well you even tested your GR. Please take a second look!

Thanks for the feedback! True true… I did however shoot the north of both my kids with a 100F and 100V and couldn’t be happier. Felt it was more discreet than the LCD option only. That been said, the Ricoh is SO small and silent and compact… would have been as good as my x100 cameras! As I said in an earlier comment yes, there are some accessories for the Ricoh but what is the point in terms of grip and ergonomics to add all that to such a small camera? You could also put a cage around it, etc. I think fuji has more possibilities (still) and can use these batter. Also - make a 18.3 (28mm) wider?? Why in hell would you want to do that for a compact camera? Not sure about that one

I much prefer the photos coming out the gr. Including the film simulations. Classic chrome on fuji is nice, but the ricoh has gorgeous black and whites, and the positive film is 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻 i just desperately want ricoh to drop a gr4. The high iso and autofocus in the dark just isn't where i want it. My new iPhone 14 has better noise performance, and its a quarter of the sensor size

The Ricoh is a great companion if your spouse/partner is sick of you bringing gear everywhere. I like to document stuff, and when I'm at fancy restaurants, a camera bag doesn't quite match the vibe. The Ricoh is amazing and I got many high quality images I wouldn't have gotten with just a smartphone. The lens is also crazy crazy sharp. Far better than I expected. Then again, it was a rental and I've no idea how it would hold up to prolonged pocket use. It might get dust eventually.

So true. I think people underestimate the importance of having a small camera that can do big things, especially in public situations like restaurants or street photography where you don’t want a larger camera being noticed. We need more of these very small ASP-C cameras like Ricoh. 🙂

Your review is excellent and I agree with your final conclusion that the X100V is the better camera, especially if its your only camera. It has everything Fujifilm is famous for in a small package. It would be a great second camera for a Fuji professional who likes to use 2 cameras at the same time. The GR3 might be a better choice if you already have the Fuji thing going and want to add it to your kit for its small size, so I'm tempted to get one. I already have a XT-1 & XT-3. The lack of accessories needed for the GRIII is a good thing that makes it a truly minimal camera kit with great capabilities. I hope that Fujifilm comes out with a budget version of the X100V that would assume the role the X70 filled, as a budget 18mm X100S, and compete with the GR3. Until then, I am tempted to get the GR3. It has IBIS and costs $100 less than the Fujifilm XF18mm 1.4. It probably produces as good an image as any Fujifilm lens does at 18mm and it fits in your pants pocket.

I enjoyed your comparison overall. Being a Fuji shooter perhaps I have my biases so I hope my comments are taken with a grain of salt. I really don’t feel I am in a position to assert which camera is better. I can say, however, that the X100 camera series are beyond qualification about a very singular experience that most closely approximates shooting with old film cameras. I came into photography 3/4 of a century ago. Digital photography and that type of analog/mechanical experience are completely different activities. In that analog photographic experience from before the end of the XX century there was a dimension of intimacy and of being part of the mechanical system resulting in the capture of the moment. A Tesla for example may be a more advanced car but the automobile-istic experience of driving an old British Morgan cannot be matched by a computer on wheels. The Fuji X100 series miracle is on how well they integrate the shooter into that old days experience of art and craft with commensurate results. I shoot an xt-4 and an x100s. The xt4 is a whole lot of camera but the 100s is like having my old Olympus Pen S in my hand. I am 14 again and in the joy of something you had to be there to feel-but on steroids. So, not even apples and oranges but more like apples and sex. Do you want to peel an orange or disrobe? Your choice.

In my opinion the only common thing between these two cameras is the size of the sensor. Other than that the GRIII is just simply a point and shoot camera, while the fuji is a range finder, and offers more to the table , control dials , flash , OVF/EVF, film simulations, better video features...

Japanese people like GR, because Daido Moriyama had used it. I have GR3, GR3X and Fuji X100F. I had used GR3 many times after Fuji. But when take the picture in day light, It is difficult to see the monitor of GR, because of sun light. It is problem to confirm the composition and focus. So recently I use more Fuji that I can put my eye close to the finder. GR has big problem for AF when you want to take picture in the dark situation. Usually AF of GR is more slowly than Fuji, too. When I want to use manual focus, Fuji is better that I can use dial. Good point of GR is discreet.

The Fuji in comparison is of course much more beautiful. Nevertheless, I would choose the Ricoh again.

Thanks for the review, you made some very good and valid points. Undoubtedly (in my opinion) the Fuji is the better camera (& significantly more expensive) BUT, most people buy the Ricoh because it is truly pocketable …… and if “pocketable” (always with you) is your purchasing criteria, then Ricoh is the natural choice. I imagine the majority of Ricoh users also own a “traditional” camera too - Cheers - Peter.

Nice comparison review! But 1 note about the image stabilization: although the fuji doesn’t have IS it does have a leaf-shutter. I had the x100s for a long time and I found the shutter to produce no vibration, and allowed me to use up to 1/15th speed which still resulted in sharp pix. Therefore, I would have given a point to Fuji for this feature 😊.

I have an xt4 and the x100v and love both. But I’m always about trying new ways to get images without carrying a lot of gear esp when traveling. I also love the Sony rx10 which is a bridge camera but it can do everything albeit with a few sacrifices (smaller sensor, smaller evf etc) and it’s not pocketable. But 24-200 at constant 2.8 is a real plus. This Ricoh has always tempted me ever since I shot with the lomo lc-a back in the day.

They are both at a different price point with the X100V being substantially more expensive. However, the GR3 can produce the same degree of quality as the X100V, so you are really paying a premium for the extra features on the X100V. Everyone's preference is different but I am selling my X100V to opt for the GR3x mainly because I want to scale down my load when I am travelling.
@cris_photography
@cris_photography 10 ай бұрын
True true. I do say the fact that if you would want the Ricoh to have all the physical options of the 100v you’d have to pay more, hence the price difference. Weight and size are a big factor for street and for overall usage and transportation, so I understand your move. Thanks for sharing your thoughts
@beaumont4045

@@cris_photography Another thought though, the X100V and GR3 used to be connoisseur's items. You only buy into them specifically because you know them. Normal people who are just causal photographers never even heard of them until Tiktokers started hyping up the X100V - which is both good and bad. Good because I got a nice price for selling it. Bad because it is losing its connoisseur status. When I look at some girl holding the X100V on the street, I just have this cringe feeling and instinctively create some distance between us. Whereas the GR3 is still a connoisseur's item, you would only buy the GR3 only if you have decided to buy the GR3, not because of the hype.

Ricoh user here. Dropped Nikon recently, after growing tired of the mirrorless advertisements and expensive new lenses. Surely I was doubting about getting the Fuji. But when I got an external flash and learned how to deal with zone focussing, my photography skills and knowledge have improved to a surprisingly different level. The ricoh is probably harder operate, but the black and whites in post production got that "oomph". The stealth is bonus! Glad I did not fell for the hype from Fuji.

Interesting, I literally just bought the Ricoh GR III because of its size… funny thing is my Fujifilm GFX100 ii arrives later this week. What prompted me to buy the Ricoh, is to use it as a backup to my Leica M11 Monochrom, which unfortunately is having issues. Size/weight and image quality are my primary concerns with the Ricoh. It’s just so dam small, I can pop it in my pocket and go. As small as the X100V is, it’s not pocketable in a pair of dress slacks. For me the X100V sits in an awkward space, too large to be a EDC camera, yet not pro enough to be a primary camera. It’s really down to your use case.

I don't know the X100V even if i read and see much about it..But all i can say is that the GR3 is delivering AMAZING pictures !!!! And the 5 axes stabilisation alllows us to go till 1/2 of a second very easily..Then to have "just" 2.8 is even not a problem.. For me only TWO POINTS could be a problem : **the viewfinder...Do we need one ? On the GR3, it's so easy to see the exposition with zebras and coorect it with one hand that i don t really care.. **The Video on the GR3 is NOT great...It s good for B Roll but the AF ...euhhhhh 28 mm is fantastic to shoot city ( you can crop after).... Bref..Maybe a great camera the fuji...Maybe TOO EXPENSIVE ? Ciaooo / JF

The mail problem is that you didn't look at what this video is aiming. this is an EVERYDAY review - not a street one! to answer your points: amazing pictures: yes it does - so does Fuji and no, in MY opinion they are not better but there are no simulations so for everyday use (for an regular Joe) it is better for straight out of the camera images. IBIS: yes, it is. Don't find it out of this world personally but it does make a diff (as I said...) Aperture: I like that extra stop for bokeh purposes and for low-light. Not for everyone but it's a plus. Viewfinder: I USE ONE - LOL. It is a MUST for me and having a hybrid OVF/EVF like no other brand is a HUGE pro. I hate feeling like am using a damn phone! I am a Leica M shooter and that tells it all. Video: I know it's bad indeed. didn't want to include it in this "photo" camera review (I will never use either of these) I don't find the fuji camera expensive - hell it's a few hundred bucks and if you take for example the evf on the Ricoh you'd add another 250 bucks! You really need to take the point of view of someone who takes his camera everywhere and who is NOT a pro photographer and see which is best. If the video was about street photography for example I'd get it. Anyhow, 2 VERY distinct beasts! Take care

You forgot to mention that Ricoh has also a converter from 28mm to 21mm ff equivalent… Also why not talking of the snap mode. Here the Fuji is just K.O…so one or 2 more points to Ricoh? I had a x100f which I sold after several month… Fuji is too bulky for my street photographies. Almost as big as an M9. After more than 2 years I still don’t regret selling the Fuji and I am still amazed by the picture quality of the Ricoh… long live the street king 😊

I have both cameras and I shoot with both. I’m always worried about dust getting into the Ricoh. No such problem with the X100V. My main gripe with the Ricoh. BTW, the Fuji film simulations are overhyped. The Ricoh film options are very good; especially the B&W modes are excellent.

Good question Mathew! I find the DNGs to be very good on the Ricoh camera and the JPEGs have a very punchy b&w. The film simulations of fuji though are what they are and that - imo - is not as good on the Ricoh. Probably going to make a separate follow up video to talk about that too. Cheers

I bought the Ricoh GR3 and sold it 8 months later because of the bad focus system and the bad black and white tones. The Fuji 100V is over priced because of the hype. I’d rather go for the Fuji XE-4 because it’s small and the the tones of colour match that of the Leica monochrome.

The only reasons to go with ricoh are lower price and ninja mode. If the the extra 500 aren't a problem for you and if passing unnoticed isn't important for you the the fuji easily wins because of the extra stop, weather sealing and colors.

@@cris_photography That's not my point, im pointing out about how versatile Ricoh GR3 is. To quote you from your video "The ability to change from the base model to something more" And you pointed out that the only thing you can change on ricoh is adding flash and viewfinder, then you mention that the fuji is more versatile because you can add grip, teleconverter, lenshood etc etc "to make it do more than its supposed to do as a basic model". I would like to make a correction to this video The customization/versatility is almost identical between the two Besides the button , the Ricoh has more or less the same accessories: Lens hood (from JJC to Squarehoo) Grip (can find on AliBaba) Thumb rest Leather Half body Cover etc Conversion lenses from Ricoh (wide angle or tele) Colored rings etc So you took a point unfairly for the GR as you can customize it a bit, similar to the X100v
@cris_photography
@cris_photography Жыл бұрын
True true. That said, if you had all that to the Ricoh (besides the additional price you will pay and the utterly cumbersome result) you will end up with a camera that basically looses all it was design for and you better off with a full-on « normal » camera at that point. I didn’t mention those cause the ate included with the X100 series and don’t add to the bulk of price. But y’a, you can even find more accessories if you wanted to - sure 👍🏼

@@cris_photography I agree that fully accessorizing a GR is against the spirit of the camera, but that was not the point of the segment, thus I wanted to make this addendum to people that they want to get a bit more out of the small GR series III +(x) if they wish for it (instead of buying another system maybe just a bit of customization is all that is needed) But yeah the point is to have these amazing camera systems in your pocket. I still rock a OG Sony RX100 Mk1 that kind of started the HiQ pocket able mirror-less trend back in the day and it's a great little camera. Thanks for the reply and the video!

@@cris_photography Thank you very much for your interest but I have not yet formed a definitive opinion on this camera, despite its very high objective qualities. I am a bit of a special case. In France, I am signed with a publisher and I have released two books so far (the 3rd one is due in November). My first book, of street photography, was entirely made with the iPhone and the second one was half made with Fuji equipment (XE2, XPro2, X100s) and the iPhone. I have always integrated the iPhone in my photographic approach and this for a long time. I have exhibited a lot (including at Paris photo / photo fever in 2019) and never had any problem with my smartphone photos... That's why I chose the GR3X. The fact of not having a viewfinder is not an obstacle to my practice. Now, if we put aside the purely technical aspect of the equipment and the rendering possibilities which are not comparable and if we talk in terms of pure uses, I still don't know if the Ricoh can really help me to get rid of my iPhone shooting habits, despite the incredible technical specifications and the snapshot functionality. I love my Fuji's for their qualities that we all know and I love working with the viewfinder. That's why, as far as I'm concerned, I'm more on the Ricoh VS iPhone question. I will certainly have clearer ideas on the question in a few weeks. If there is one thing that bothers me with the Ricoh, it's the screen when shooting in sunlight.

Because why get such a small camera if you gonna add - for example - an evf on top (250$ nonetheless)? Or add a grip? And a filter, a thumb test, etc.? For one it become SUPER cumbersome and not only the price goes up drastically but aesthetically and confort speaking - it ain’t good, hence the versatility issue compared to an X100 camera that is a bit bigger but can do those things much better, cheaper and still looking good. Anyway, that’s my personal take on it. Cheers
