In the corner of a busy office at the NHK Broadcasting Center in Shibuya, Tokyo, a staffer rearranged books, vinyl records and tchotchkes on a bright red shelving unit. The production crew double-checked equipment settings and made small adjustments to the lighting. Another worker added a few more posters to the tall white file cabinets. Cameras were set and microphones were ready because Fujii Kaze and his band had just rehearsed the night before. Everyone in the room - including a few of us from NPR that were there to help - was eager and excited because the very first performance for Tiny Desk Concerts JAPAN was about to start.
Popular around the world, the talented Fujii Kaze is a Japanese singer and pianist known for his sultry R&B grooves and catchy songwriting. His adventurous spirit was strong as he settled into the Tiny Desk way - a concert that's intimate, mostly acoustic and recorded without reverb, effects, in-ear monitors or wedges. During the rehearsal, the band quickly acclimated to the environment and adjusted instrument volumes to hear each other better. The end result was a beautiful 30 minute set, captured without pause and with no stops, restarts or retakes.
This video is part of the second international version of Tiny Desk, a joint venture between NPR and The Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) - the sole public media organization in Japan that is operated with the purpose of providing the latest news, education and culture both domestically and internationally. This new series will spotlight emerging and established Japanese artists with the same engaged performances, look and feel of the original Tiny Desk Concerts series.

Thank you for your kind words. Fujii Kaze is still young and I don't think he has yet reached the sophistication of bossa nova, but I hope that he will one day become a great artist like Tom Jobim. I dream of being blessed with the same good fortune as Ryuichi Sakamoto, who once let me record at Tom's house.

Fujii Kaze is a great artist to start with. He writes his songs, he is talented, and he did it with hard work and on his own. There are a lot, a LOT of talented musicians in Japan that never get any recognition and dream to play even in random live houses in Shinjuku, So bringing Kaze-san on is truly a big NPR move. You're showing that hey, yes he made it big, but it's still not easy, it's still a struggle, so he and the whole band deserves some love from around the world. The love that went into the set is something you can tell he'd appreciate, without even knowing him. Good luck in the future to anyone else that wants to make it in music!

I lived with paralysing PTSD. Basically I was borderline alive for a decade. Then one day last year I randomly stumbled upon Kaze's Love All Serve All concert on Netflix. Long story short, by listening to his amazing songs every day, Kaze's message of joy, self-love and acceptance germinated in my soul. Within a few short weeks no more PTSD. No more nightmares. No more depressive thoughts. His music hit me like a miracle freight train. btw, I keep this story on the low because, fact, nobody would believe it if I told them.

His music is tuned to 432hz instead of the standard 440hz, which gives his songs a unique warmth and beauty.
@jeneticallyfkd
@jeneticallyfkd 5 күн бұрын
@@myrose0123 ok my time to shine, firstly let’s talk about wavelengths. Sound, including Fujii Kaze’s marvellous voice travels in the form of waves through the air, these waves have different lengths corespondent to different pitches, when Fujii Kaze sings, his voice generates a medley of waves with varying lengths, producing a rich spectrum of tones that resonate both with our ears and souls. For example, in Matsuri, the chorus goes from a high pitch with a bright and energetic tone that perfectly reflects the celebratory theme of the song while also delving into the relaxed and conversational tone during the verses, adding a warm, gentle and intimate timbre. When the electric guitar part comes, his vocals become climactic and again change the tone. Humans making sound itself is complex interplay of airflow, vocal cord vibrations, and resonance within the vocal tract. Fujii Kaze's ability to control these factors with precision allows him to effortlessly transition between high and low pitches, creating the masterpiece we just watched. Fujii Kaze's voice exhibits a distinctive timbre, or tone quality, that is warm and resonant . Timbre is influenced by the shape of the vocal tract and the unique characteristics of the vocal cords, and Fujii Kaze's timbre evokes a sense of intimacy and emotional depth in his music. Specially seen in “Garden” according to me, the lyrics blended with the tone of his voice almost too perfectly. Anyway he’s a gem, love him. (I have a literature paper tomorrow, I will bid you guys adieu now, thank you)

Anyway, thank you for your time and comment. It was fun. I love science and liberal arts. I hope some scientists will study/research about Kaze’s music based on the physics, psychophysics, quantum physics, astronomy, mathematics, etc in the future. I’m a musician and a long time fan. I was very delighted when I find out about this, and Matsuri was so good that I immediately grabbed my bass mid-song to play along. To my surprise I sounded off-key. It was then I found out that Fujii Kaze and his music team used the 432hz tuning- not the usual 440hz used by most popular music. Not gonna go into the rocket sciencey spiritual stuff but this is also why the songs hits different. It is said that 432hz is the natural frequency of the earth, and it directly corresponds to the human body, mind and soul. It is the natural healing frequency. I’m not someone who is into this kind of metaphysical theories, but after this performance, I’m a believer. Well done to Fujii Kaze and the NPR team and excuse my long-winded rambling. Love from Australia 🥰

He sings about the garden that we all have in our hearts, a garden that changes landscape again and again as our lives change. Unfortunately, some of the song's subtlety is lost in the English translation, but it's still a beautiful song that captures the Japanese sensibility.

What do you expect white people? They are not Japanese, nor do they understand Japan and the context of the lives of the people living in Japan. The human race lacks the basic ability of empathy and seeing the perspectives of others. Thus we will always rely on stereotypes and cliches. But at least the popular image of Japan has turned from negative in the 80s/90s to positive with the advent of KZbin and social media.
