What you've got here is a perfect 20-minute distillation of The Sam Smith Experience: The Grammy-winning 2014 ballad that kicked off the singer's career ("Stay With Me"), a sleek dance-pop banger ("How Do You Sleep") and a chart-topping dollop of debauched hedonism ("Unholy") bundled together with "Lay Me Down," in which Smith performed a gorgeous duet with LaDonna Harley-Peters. From the stately to the louche and bawdy - Smith even introduced "Unholy" with a perfect summation of their recent artistic direction: "Let's get saucy!" - it's all here.
Performing with an 11-person choir and two instrumentalists - sadly, Kim Petras wasn't there to emerge from between Smith's legs as if she were being birthed - Smith brought an overflowing bag of tricks to the proceedings. But what really shone through was a sense of movement: Each song swayed and played effervescently, centering Smith while also elevating every other magnificent voice in support. This set may not serve as anyone's introduction to the music of Sam Smith, but it's still a hell of a gateway - and a joy to behold.

Yes I do, I believe That one day I will be, where I was Right there, right next to you And it's hard, the days just seem so dark The moon, the stars, are nothing without you Your touch, your skin, where do I begin? No words can explain, the way I'm missing you The night, this emptiness This hole that I'm inside These tears, they tell their own story You told me not to cry when you were gone But the feeling's overwhelming It's much too strong Can I lay by your side, next to you, you And make sure you're alright I'll take care of you And I don't want to be here if I can't be with you tonight I'm reaching out to you Can you hear my call? (Who's to say you won't hear me?) This hurt that I've been through I'm missing you, missing you like crazy You told me not to cry when you were gone But the feeling's overwhelming It's much too strong Can I lay by your side, next to you, you And make sure you're alright I'll take care of you And I don't wanna be here if I can't be with you tonight Lay me down tonight, lay me by your side Lay me down tonight, lay me by your side Can I lay by your side, next to you, you-ou And make sure you're alright I'll take care of you And I don't wanna be here if I can't be with you tonight

Sam Smith's Tiny Desk Concert is a captivating and soul-stirring performance that showcases the incredible talent and emotive power of their voice. The stripped-down acoustic setting of the Tiny Desk series allows for a more intimate and raw performance, and Sam Smith absolutely shines in this intimate environment. Throughout the concert, Sam's vocals are nothing short of breathtaking. Their ability to hit every note with precision, control, and powerful emotion is truly remarkable. Whether it's the soaring high notes or the delicate falsetto, Sam's voice effortlessly captivates the audience and evokes a range of emotions. The song selection for the concert is perfect, showcasing some of Sam Smith's most iconic hits. Whether it's the soulful and heart-wrenching "Stay With Me," the heartfelt and vulnerable "Too Good at Goodbyes," or the uplifting and empowering "Latch," each performance is delivered with a level of authenticity and emotional depth that leaves a lasting impact. In addition to their incredible vocal prowess, Sam's stage presence and genuine connection with the audience is commendable. They share personal stories and anecdotes, making the performance feel even more intimate and personal. It's evident that they pour their heart and soul into each song, making it a truly unforgettable experience. Overall, Sam Smith's Tiny Desk Concert is a testament to their extraordinary talent and artistry. It's a masterclass in vocal performance, emotional storytelling, and genuine connection with an audience. Whether you're a fan of Sam Smith or not, this concert is a must-watch for anyone who appreciates powerful and heartfelt music.

This is an amazing concert--everyone was wonderful. Also, I loved how at the end, Sam gestured to one of the singers to include the piano player in the hug. This group has great energy, vocals, and on top of everything--seems to really care about each other. Also, Sam is amazing--those vocals!
