Eddie was one of the no-doubters in WSM history. He won the squat, he won the Deadlift, and placed well in all the others. Guy was a very solid athlete throughout. But of all the guys there, he probably had the most static strength. The greatest strongman of the field was Martin Licis though. That little guy was only like 305 lbs or so, and he was keeping up with the 400+ lbs guys. I love it when little guys like that come around and keep things interesting. As for men who were so far ahead of their time... consider that Bill Kazmaer, one of the commentators, as he was in 1981 would have placed top 3 in this year's Squat and Dead lift events. The guy was confirmed to have pulled around 1000 lbs with straps, and squatted 950 lbs unequipped. And he was doing that at 320 lbs size. It's Ironic that in the early 80's he was considered above average size to average, and today he'd be one of the smallest ones. That's just how far steroids and diets have come. We understand so much more about how to pack on mass.
@techbeef7 күн бұрын
And they stacked the events to ensure he would. WSM is a British program and they stack the events to favor their athletes, they did for capes back in the day when they stopped inviting Bill, they did it for Eddie here when they stacked it with static events and they did it with Tom for the two years that he won

I’m not a huge fan of the way Eddie conducted himself in the pre-fight with Thor but damn. I can see why he had such a chip on his shoulder. Mateusz never tearing the tricep and winning wsm, Eddie not retiring at cutting to 175kg and win more Britain's, and my Favorite, Mike Jenkins never Passing, winning Wsm, pushing Z on log, and breaking records in the dumbbell and frame.

When you get stronger at a reasonable pace, all those things get stronger as well. Many people lift heavy weights to build up their bone density and connective tissue. That's why it's hard to get hurt when you have been lifting heavy for so long. Mike Ohearn mid to late 50s and has never been hurt. He still goes extremely heavy, and will continue forever. It's what keeps him healthy. Really pushing your limits like the guys in this contest though can obviously cause injury. You can still push those limits even with extremely strong connective tissue, and that's what happens in a competition like this. Awesome contest though.

@@adamcharlton5339 Eddie had a 2,650 pound total, certainly not plenty of powerlifters who are stronger than that. And sorry to tell you but strongmen are stronger people than powerlifters, regardless of total.

@@YoYoYoYoYoYoPeace just isn’t true daniel bell has a better total than Eddie would ever get
@YoYoYoYoYoYoPeace Жыл бұрын
@@adamcharlton5339 Im basing Eddies total from his max lift at different times. For example his max squat was done well before his 500kg deadlift. But the numbers are real, strongmen are just stronger than powerlifters. It's not even close or a debate really.

Gave eddy some stick for his under par performance against thor in the boxing match, but this win to become worlds strongest man back in 2017 is still right up there with every winner before and after this dominant display by the "BEAST". Still say eddie is THE best dead lifter i have ever seen. Will even go as far to say that if he kept up with his strength training for strongman, that he would have been a 2X winner and would have regained his deadlift world record, of that i have no doubt.
@oceanbanana43412 жыл бұрын
Maybe but I wish he'd focused a bit more on speed and he'd have 100% won another title

Seeing the arguments in the comments and the never ending debate of who is better between eddie and thor, both are amazing strongmen and both are winners of the competition. Let's stop there. No use of arguing. Eddie was just better than everyone else that year and thor was better than everyone else the following year. Done. Also, let's all just agree that Brian is the best of all time.
@paulrawn90933 жыл бұрын
I agree, both are legit worlds strongest men winners and that year was just Eddie's year
@richardthomas36973 жыл бұрын
i think this settles the debate better - if "number of overall titles" is used as the measurement of who's better between Eddie and Thor then Thor wins, if "number of Europe's Strongest Man titles" is used then Thor wins, if "number of Arnold Classic titles" is used then Thor wins, if "number of WSM podium placements" is used then Thor wins I'd say Big Z is the best of all time

and Thor cries like a baby when she didn't have the power that the winner had. Eddie got an easy 15 rep. He would have still had 16-17, but he knew 15 would be enough, so he left it at that. Thor wouldn't have gotten more

To me Licis is easily most impressive in this one. 4th place at 309lb body weigh while 1st, 2nd and 3rd are all well over 400lbs is really impressive. And 970lb deadlift at ~300lb is arguably way more impressive than 1040lb at 430lb.
