Full Build: Transforming A Classic '49 Ford Into A Custom Hot Rod Creation

Everybody loves old school hot rods, and our ’49 Ford is one sweet treat that gets plenty of custom work like suicide doors and hot rod yellow paint. The guys convert ancient king pins and drums to spindles and discs to lower and slow down our flathead Ford. Then, they fab custom fiberglass bubble skirts and lay down a two-tone paint job. Plus, old school sheet metal tricks to convert the classic Ford into a custom with suicide doors.

My first car was an old military surplus 1949 Ford!!. Flathead 6 w/ 3 on the tree. It took forever to just do the speed limit but was total fun for us to cruise around in. That back seat was easy to remove and the trunk held several stow aways getting into the drive-in flicks. Yes I am that old.....LOL.......but ahhh the memories of the best time this country has ever seen. Happy days !!

I understand the mechanics of sponsorships…..I do…..but it’s gotten to the point where I’m waiting on the day when Tommy says, “Bathroom breaks are an integral part of any build. I’m gonna go in the ol’ water closet and drop a deuce, and this toilet paper from Summit Racing is gonna make sure that we’re all clean at the finish. Let’s get to it”

Pop drug a '53 Ford truck out of his buddy's garden in the early '80's. Lord knows how long it sat there as it was the guys Grandpa's. Marvel in the plug holes while Pop worked on the rest. Simple backyard custom stuff. A little altitude adjustment, paint, wheels and tires and rewire she was ready for the engine. Rebuilt the Carb, sucked out the MMO, dropped in the plugs and hit the switch. That Old Flattie fired up like it had never missed a day and never missed a beat. Sounded like nothing else with those twin Cherry Bombs. He used it as his daily until an Old Timer made him an offer he couldn't pass up. Pop's had a few vehicles I wish I could've kept for myself but out of all of 'em, that '53 is the ONE I'd take over them all.

My Dad coming home from the war bought a '46 Ford and as a little guy I used to help him wash, polish and wrench on his car. When we moved in 54 he traded the '46 for a 1950 Ford that was pretty much exactly like this car. It fell into my hands when he bought his 1957 Ford and I loved the old car. I have some many good high school memories from this old car. I wish so much that I had it still. Good build and the color just POPS! Tommy sure does a good job on the welding.

Apart from the chassis not being blasted, I noticed that the original parts you put back on are dirt & rust covered. To make this a show car, it would have been nice to see the chassis powder coated, & all parts painted & the underbody treated. I would have gone that bit extra & made the skirts from steel & cut & welded them, as per the headlights. But overall, she do look goooood.

Those 49 to 51 Fords were famous for the bolts that hold the steering box to the frame breaking causing loss of steering. Happened to me back in the late 1960's. I went to several wrecking yards looking for replacement bolts and most all the 49 to 51 Fords had the steering boxes welded to the frame. A friend who was old Ford nut hooked me up with some allen head cap screws to fix the problem.

These guys make me look good at fiberglassing lol. It seems like guy got some fiberglassing tips from someone in between doing the outside and the inside. I'm still learning and not all that good yet. Laying down fiberglass appears to be simple and straightforward but it's really not, in my experience. It's easier than painting but it still can be pretty tricky. I don't feel like looking through the comments but I would imagine that there's comments telling them how they should've done it. It turned out great though, and that's all that matters. The fiberglassing here was basically cosmetic so I guess it doesn't really matter anyway

I worked in a wet laminate boat yard for years... back in the day when it came to P.P.E. they actually told us to not worry about the dust and fumes as we would cough that stuff right up. Well as the years went by and everyone learned more about the actual product we was using we learned that you actually don't cough that stuff up cause the particles are so small and sharp that it will embed into your lungs and ruin them just the dust alone not to mention what the fumes do to your head. In short fiberglassing is very bad for your health. For grinding I recommend covering up all exposed skin and male sure you have a dust mask that will specifically filter out organic peroxides as thats one of the main ingredients and one of the worst for you... please take my advice and done end up like me ... sitting home with junk lungs not able to breath well... you'll thank me

These guys are incredible with what they know and can do! However, I agree with the guy who said that he could not imagine putting all of this work into a car without sandblasting the entire car and powder coating the entire chassis before they started. It’s kind of like the old saying, “Putting Lipstick In A Pig.”

I just wish Fatman parts weren't expensive as crap for parts that don't fit worth a damn. I tried to put those uprights on my '49 and everything about them needed modification just to get them installed on the car. If camber adjustment was needed for the alignment, forget it because that cam was not moving once it was hammered into the upright. $900 not well spent
