In April 2024 we walked from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port to Santiago de Compostela as a family of five.
Camino Update Day #26
We woke up to white mountains. Our albergue was near the top of the pass, and there was snow everywhere. It was great fun for the first hour, but then when it turned to rain the fun wore off. Then when we went over another pass, it turned to snow again and kept coming for hours. We have had the spectrum of weather: blazing sun, mist, rain, sleet, and snow. We had to put on everyone’s pajamas, then their hiking clothes, then their windbreakers, and trudge on.
There were some times when I was concerned about lowering body temperature with the soaking clothes, but we stopped when able and tried to dry off. The other danger was the mud and wet stone we were crossing. No one took a dive, but there were a couple times where it was close and could have been bad. In the afternoon the sun peaked out and we seemed to recover.
After yesterday’s extreme physical challenge, today was one of the greatest mental challenges for the kids. It is tough to be cold and wet and still have to walk eighteen miles. But they did it! We found our apartment, ran hot showers, started the cartoons, ate a big meal, and did lots of laundry.
