One correction, as someone who has owned Jackson's Chameleons, they still do lay eggs. Theyre not a live birth spcies, they're a live-BEARING species. They get pregnant with the egg, form most of it, then release the egg to hatch outside of their body. The eggs are semi-hard, kinda like snake eggs, and by the time you see the chameleon's egg its basically time for the egg to hatch.

I remember hearing a theory about why FO4’s deathclaws aren’t as deadly as the ones in FONV. It was because the New Vegas ones were in a more desolate and dangerous land where food and water was harder to find, so they had to adapt to their surroundings. As for the FO4 ones are in a more lively area teeming with wildlife and water, where they are at the top of the food chain, so they’re bigger but not as brutal due to their easy survival

Furthermore I believe the FO4 and 76 Deathclaw is one of many sub species developed from genetic meddling. It’s clear they are different from the Deathclaw of 1,2,3, NV. My theory: Due to their loner mentality, the Deathclaw have thicker claws and tougher hides with large crocodilian scales compared to smaller smoother scales we normally see. This is protect them from both larger threats like behemoths, and firearms. Their forked tongue had to be developed to hunt for pray and sense danger. Especially danger as they don’t have someone watching their backs. Their pattern of zigzagging is evidence of adapting different hunting and fighting tactics compared to the pack deathclaws. Who charge all together utilizing their numbers to overwhelm. While Loner Deathclaws must use their environment and movement for fights. Their mental weakness is also a factor of the isolated nature. Being not reliant upon a mother and father who leads the pack, the loner Deathclaw has to rely on itself and as the saying goes “two brains are smarter than one.” So this can explain their weaker mental fortitude a trade in for sorts for their strong skin and claws.

I always thought that blind deathclaws in NV are old deathclaws. In mountains between Nipton and Novac there's one of them along with large pile of different bones. So I thought that they are not only old specimens, but like elephants by reaching high age and blindness they go to desolate places to die there. Also, about eggs in both males and females - it can be useful for revival of an offspring. Matriarchs can lay lots of eggs, but if she dies, there's still can be large number of lesser specimens, so with the alpha or matriarch by their own a pack can be revive.

Considering Bethesda basically turned super mutants into orcs and removed the nuance of fallout 1/2 I highly doubt we’d ever see intelligent deathclaws again. But a boy can dream Edit: I had to re-read my comment after looking at the replies because a lot of them are comically salty compared to what feels like a pretty mid take. Intelligent deathclaws are silly, but still interesting. Imo fallout is at its best when it rides the line of silly and thought provoking. Also for the people explaining the lore on supermutants, I know why they’re dumber and less interesting in Bethesda’s lore, but they wrote that lore. It didn’t spawn out of nowhere and they just HAD to follow it, they made them orcs and then gave a justification. My point overall was less “bring back smort dethclown” and more Bethesda’s world building feels a bit, incurious and shallow/fragile, especially after starfield revealed what they’d do with an original property where they didn’t have someone else’s world to build on. 1-2 are imperfect but they took some big swings and 3-4 are fine but didn’t really do anything particularly interesting with the setting. I do find it weird that “I’m disappointed or dissatisfied with these games” sparks such outrage, you’re allowed to like imperfect/bad games, there are bad games I like, but that doesn’t stop me from wanting them to be better or appreciating when someone else doesn’t like the bad game I like and listening to their points. It’s also why 1-2 criticism isn’t the gottcha fanboys seem to think it is. Loving or supporting something uncritically doesn’t mean you love it more, just that you love it sadder.

my ideal end for the intelligent deathclaws was that Goris having parted ways with the chosen one eventually found a new home with a new pack. Eventually he would end up helping an injured female left to die by the others. This forms a bond between the two, this new pair would lead to a challenge by the alpha who believed Goris was a threat to his leadership. Goris with help of his new companion would win becoming the new Alpha, he and the new mother would create a new generation of intelligent deathclaws hidden away in the ruins of a library where Goris would spend his final days compiling all his knowledge while teaching his children a basic near hieroglyphic writing system to help further their intelligence. While they would begin to domesticate several animals as to not be such a burden on the local populations that may wish to deal with the creatures. This small community would stay hidden away living peacefully as nothing more than a deathclaw nest keeping all but the bravest or dumbest away from their home.

What would be cool is if they had more time they could have made the death claw promontory like the only entrance to it is that one sloping entrance from the river would be cool if Goris was standing at the base of there to warn you ‘like HEY HEY HEY DONT SHOOT’ something like ‘I’m smart but my pack behind me isn’t used to humans and are violent. @Arkimedus Жыл бұрын
One thing I think could be an explanation for the difference in mental fortitude in east coast vs west coast deathclaws is due to the master's tinkering. The master is a psychic being, and perhaps, his tinkering was focused primarily on being able to link deathclaws into his psychic "web" of unity, (rather than directly controlling them, he made them a part of unity's collective conscious), and by doing so, he inherently allowed the descendants of this offshoot variant of deathclaw to be more willful and resistant to control-attempts. Thereby, while original "enclave-originating" Deathclaws might've originated from the east coast (or at least further east than fallout 1-2) and those that ended up spreading throughout the west coast are largely the descendants of those experimented on by the master, by and large making the deathclaws in the west more capable of resisting mind-control in its various forms.

He can want them to never return, but it doesn't mean they are never or should never return, too many interesting things could be done with them. Just generally expanding on the kinds of whacky minor factions to include more legacy ideas from the older games would be really nice to see.

The Deathclaws is pre-war, because you could find a head of one in the Mechanist lair in a glass jar ( I might be wrong It’s been a while since I played that DLC.). So my personal theory is that Deathclaws and their eggs were being transported to research labs for more research and modifications, then the bombs happened letting the Deathclaws loose out of their connectivity. Fallout 76 could be the origins of the Deathclaws in fallout three and fallout four.

Aside from the fact that I'm obsessed with Deathclaws and find them absolutely fascinating, I must point out that whenever I've encountered one and obviously managed to kill it, I always have a strong, almost urgent desire to try to study its face. I guess it's just so I can marvel at its massive horns, its beak-like mouth and those venomous, glowing red eyes; Yes, they are perhaps somewhat hypnotic. When I would come across one early in my time playing Fallout, I would be absolutely terrified and often, it almost seemed as though the Deathclaw had seen me before I saw it.. When one approaches and gets within striking distance of you, apart from the fact that your chances of living beyond that point are next to zero, it just leaves me bewildered to see how it towers over you like a monster from your nightmares, and you can't believe how it managed to close the distance so fast to be able to tear you limb from limb. The only place you can think of to describe a Deathclaw's origins is from the very depths of Hell itself. When we 'broke the Jar over our little world', (nuclear apocalypse), such hatred and such loss of lives, so many souls passing over into the other realm, must have stirred whatever evil there lurks within the Empyrean and maybe all that death and destruction simply created enough energy for this Daemon-spawn to cross over into our realm... Who knows? What if it was some kind of experiment like the Super Mutants perhaps? 'Let's see what we get if we'... inject Komodo Dragon DNA into a Human and zap it with enough Rads to kick start a new species of creature with the FEV virus? Or the Geck? It might be best not to try to think too much about these fearsome and monstrous creatures, just do a second pass of the wall and see if it needs any reinforcement anywhere... Oh, and try not to die.

The thing that always got to me about FO4's depiction of Deathclaws, is that the Sole Survivor would have had absolutely no knowledge of them, and have dealt with little more terrifying than big bugs and rapid dogs by the time the attack at Concord happens... And yet we strap on our power armour, go toe-to-toe with a Deathclaw, and at no point turn round to Preston, shake him by his lapels, and ask "WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT, AND ARE THERE GOING TO BE MORE OF THEM?!?!?!" A perfect opportunity to hammer home just how dangerous and terrifying the Commonwealth now was, and how wandering around on your tod with nothing more than a pipe gun might be an incredibly foolish idea, but no. Nothing. Just "oh well, that was a bit anti-social. Still, Deathclaw Vindaloo for dinner, everyone?"

I think it would be neat if it turned out that most deathclaws, besides when hunting, only attack to defend themselves against perceived threats- which humans have, over time, proven themselves to be- and that people of the wasteland could eventually learn to coexist with them. Maybe in a future game, you could come across a settlement that farms brahmin to feed to a deathclaw in the area in exchange for its alliance, and it helps them in protecting that settlement against dangerous wasteland animals, raiders, supermutants, or even other hostile deathclaws.

Fun fact. When an animal that is a part of an animal group that lays eggs, but has love births. That usually means that they make a fully formed egg, but they keep it inside themselves and then break it open close to, or during the process of, birth. So with the tech of Fallout that’s not a hard fix.

Not always, sharks are weird in that they present 3 different forms of birth across species (and have been known to reproduce asexually in captivity). Oviparous, lay external eggs. Ovivivparous, as you said. Viviparous, mammalian like in a number of cases. The hairy deathclaws potentially are monotremes, egg laying mammals (Platypus and Echidna being the only extant examples in the real world) given suckling young but laying eggs.

Maybe the reason that east coast deathclaws are able to be pacified is due to the intelligence, theyre not on the level of the intelligent deathclaws from vault 13, but we see clear use of the area and tools (superior melee weapon, car) around it and even tactics such as ambushes, with west coast deathclaws being more animalistic and simplistic, this could be degradation of the genetic tinkering overtime and distance of east to west

I like the F4 Deathclaws, they're bulky and better animated, they look like battle beasts. But New Vegas deathclaws were scary. They ran with a gaunt, their sharp edgy movements with their sometimes impressive ability to climb basically made them raptors. Which is kinda why I thought they swung in the other opposite direction in F4 and made them tyrannosaurs. While I thought the vanilla story was a little elementary, F4 is a fantastic firefight game
@vladyvhv9579 Жыл бұрын
A bit of lore in New Vegas. It's mentioned that deathclaws can be observed sharpening their own claws, as is seen in the animations. Additionally, the Gun Runners have noted how the .50 cal anti-tank guns are effective against the deathclaws. This may explain a bit of how populations could be somewhat controlled. The head miner also mentions that the deathclaws typically avoid the quarry because of the explosions from their TNT.

The concept of intelligent Deathclaws was always something I wish was brought back in later games. The closest we got was the Devil's Due quest in Fallout 4, where the Deathclaw mother knows you aren't trying to attack her. But that honestly pales in comparison to the utterly terrifying thought of a Deathclaw taking control of a Radier gang and having its underlings craft armor for it. Or even better, a branch of the Brotherhood crafting specially designed suits of Power Armor for intelligent Deathclaws. Or Deathclaw mercenaries being hired to protect cities or caravans Keeping them a rarity would be best though, if you were to ask me. And obviously with every person in the Wasteland being terrified of them. Maybe some would hate being feared and avoided, while others would enjoy it

Alright, here's my headcanon: East coast fallout tends to be more about tiny groups trying to survive in the wasteland while West coast fallout is more about the major factions and their development. I believe that as deathclaws spread eastward, they encountered less and less resistance from humans since said humans are barely surviving as it is. This led to Eastern deathclaws being somewhat weaker around Massachusetts and are seen being able to survive on their own more often rather than relying on packs. This is what allows both the Sole Survivor in 4 and the Enclave and BoS in 3 to have an easier time controlling them. Back West, however, the rapid growth of human factions pushed deathclaws farther than ever before. They needed to become more aggressive and rely on each other even more in order to survive. This is why the Quarry Junction deathclaws are insane murder machines that jump your ass as a group the moment they even hear a single spurr jingle jangle jingle.
@barnabuskey3956 Жыл бұрын
How about this. You get a radio transmission of a group of mercenaries who are pinned down and are in desperate need of support. They then through other in game terminals and speakers guide you to them where you find 2 groups fighting it out. You stop the entire battle to both sides pissed as fragglerocks that you've put their war on the other group on hold. This is where you decide to either side with the deathclaw mercenaries or with the marauders. The choice is yours and that choice leads you down more missions to either aide the deathclaw mercenaries or marauders to stamp out the other side completely. These mission tie into the main mission in the long run somehow.

The scariest part is when you first visit Lynn Woods.... your shooting these raiders, focusing on the people, your not in power armor, because ... meh just dumb raiders... Your health gets to about 35 percent..... then it happens By now the deathclaw has came up behind you because a raider has hit it with a bb gun pellet for all the good that will do and once all the raiders are dead, Mrs Deathclaw come up behind you or from the side like a Raptor from Jurassic Park.... ROARS in your face like a T-Rex, and uses you for a touchdown victory dance, head first into the ground hard. Your staggered and by now are panicked, but once again it grabs your and holds you up with one hand and tilts you a little, looking you in the eyes, flicks its other hand like a switchblade from hell, looks at the long claw, looks back to you and Impales you on the claw through the chest and slashes down..... (At this point it is good the game has no horror rating, because the deathclaw would have torn your liver, kidneys, stomach, intestines, and severed major arteries. You would get to see a pile of yourself falling to the floor and the deathclaw tosses your broken, ravaged, dieing self into the pile of bodies it will later use as a nest, your rotting husk used to feed the newly hatched deathclaws)(if your lucky you are dead, if not the deathclaw has somehow kept you alive for long term storage...)

My favorite personal theory is that depending on the military installment or lab, they spliced the deathclaw with different animals. Jackson Chameleons could have been spliced with birds or certain pack mammals, explaining their design AND tendency to group in some games. Ostriches, for instance, are TYPICALLY mostly solitary birds.....Until eggs come into the picture. The father will do everything to ensure it's chicks survival, from guarding the eggs to the newly hatched chicks, and will even offer shade by spreading it's wings. The Deathclaw Matriarch and Alpha could actually have been spliced with wolf DNA, as they more closely mimic a wolf pack. A mated pair that leads the group and makes its decisions, as well as only THAT pair is allowed to breed, and all the other members are the pairs children. As for mimicking human sounds? Well....Any sort of bird that's capable of it, actually....Parrots, Parakeets, even Ravens and Crows.
