How does someone secure a partial with two teeth unless they are spread apart ?
@johnjazayeri2 жыл бұрын
Hi Aloha. You're correct! If you have just two teeth left and they are spread apart, then they can give your partial denture pretty decent support. However, if your two remaining teeth are next to each other, then it's almost the equivalent of having one tooth left. This means that your partial dentures will probably remain loose and wobbly. What are your options if this applies to you? 1. Consider removing your last 1 or 2 teeth and go to a full denture 2. Consider adding a dental implant on the opposite side to stabilize your partial denture

Hi, your videos are awesome. Is it common for someone to have a full denture and a partial denture?
@johnjazayeri2 жыл бұрын
Hi Marquisa. Glad you enjoyed them. It is actually very common to have a full denture and a partial denture at the same time. Most people have a full top with a partial on the bottom. This combination works pretty well. The top stays in with suction, while the bottom is secured with the few remaining teeth. The opposite, a lower full with partial on top, can be a bit of a problem. Lower full dentures are pretty loose, and if they are opposing a firm partial denture on top, that would make them even more uncomfortable. Many patients with this situation seek dental implants to stabilize their lower complete denture. Great question by the way. Good luck with your smile!

I had no idea so many people in the US were completely toothless. In the UK over 75 is around 5%... mad!
@johnjazayeri2 жыл бұрын
Hi Daisy. I think the numbers are actually more similar than you think. It's because of the wording that there appears to be such a huge discrepancy. The British Dental Association reports that about 6% of UK adults have no natural teeth. I mentioned that about 25% of Americans over 75 are completely toothless. 6% of all adults roughly translates into 20 to 25% of all adults over the age of 65. I guess the bottom line is, if you don't care for your teeth and gums, you have a decent chance of losing them as you age, regardless of whether you're an American, British, Australian, etc.

what is the chewing capabilities for partials ?
@johnjazayeri2 жыл бұрын
Hi Aloha. I estimate the chewing efficiency of dentures, full or partial, to be about 15% to 60% that of natural teeth. This means that you need to chew your food more, for longer periods, in order to break the food particles down. There is quite a variation as some people do much better than others. Just don't expect removable teeth to be nearly as effective as your own teeth! As the dentures loosen and the denture teeth wear out, they lose their chewing efficiency. If you're wearing a 15 year old full set of dentures, you may be functioning at 10 to15% chewing efficiency. This can severely affect your digestion since you can't break down food particles. In fact, a handful of my patients have been referred to me for dental implants because of this exact fact. Their physician had determined that they are not absorbing enough nutrients from their food since their denture teeth weren't breaking down food particles sufficiently to aid in absorption. These patients had to opt for dental implants to improve their mastication. I should mention that this does not apply to everyone. My old man wears his full dentures and you'll find him biting into an apple or steak any day of the week! Still, even the best denture wearers are operating at no better than 50 to 60% chewing efficiency as compared to when they had a full set of teeth. Hope that helped and good luck with your dentures/partials!
