I love these "realistic" videos. Sometimes when we watch we tune in and just sort of assume you're a billionaire and none of these costs are actually significant to you. It's awesome to see the way you budget for these cars and make the numbers work. You think about these things the same way I do even though I own one sports car and you own a fleet lol! Another great Shmee video, many thanks. And, it's not just supercars that can be expensive to own and operate either. I purchased a 1976 Volkswagen Golf LS 5-door manual hatch for aud$6,000 and kept it in mint condition too with good insurance, etc and my yearly maintenance service costs were $2,000 to $3,000 which also included grease and oil changes at 10,000 km intervals. Incredibly expensive but my car, at the time, was a beast performance wise and would cruise all day long at 145 km/hr and never miss a beat and still have the driest gray exhaust(!). So, basically, like the Schmee McLaren if you're going to look after your vehicle and keep it at tip-top performance and condition it will cost a significant amount!

Very informative and interesting for me as a 675LT owner. Like you I am in it for the long term but I decided to self under write the warranty and so far have saved 12k as the car has been good. Lower miles and a switch to P Zero's for dry and wet road use has also meant lower tyre costs. A great car to drive and the combination of a 1230kg dry kerb weight, good power and the very best steering and driving position is hard to beat.

Interesting run through. I do think your valuation is well out though Cheapest 675LT Spyder on Autotrader is a white example (boring) with almost 11,000 miles on it and it's up for £215k A 9k mile example in same colour as yours is £220k although that does have 1 years Mclaren warranty. Whack a Mclaren warranty on it and on a private sale and I'd suggest £200-210k is more like it. Fortunately for us all you have no plans to sell it seems :)
@gazzabrownhigh88913 жыл бұрын
Yep agree Totally even with the high mileage its a £220k car. I've had trade bids on mine at £220k and they will want £20k margin in it

Useful information. I’m not in your league but I have 2 Porsches and 3 Ferraris and others and I do not use extended warranties at all. If you’re averagely lucky/unlucky, it’s better to self-insure and with a few cars, the pooling effect will mean you are better off, especially with low average mileages.

Depreciation - the elephant in the room of new car sales! I find it interesting that some cars, almost all, depreciate faster than a piano in free fall initially, then usually slow their rate of depreciation, then sometimes plateau. Few reach absolutely zero value if looked after, and then of course there’s those special cars that start appreciating with time and variables such as low build numbers, race history, and / or celebrity ownership (occasionally, depending on the celebrity!). Who would have thought twenty years ago McLaren F1 values would be where they are today? And then there’s the next elephant about to enter the room - as more countries turn their backs on internal combustion engined vehicles what effect will that have on values? Some suggest values will dive, as more cities place restrictions on their use, not to mention fuel sales, and other folks say the values will climb as rarity value kicks in. Going to be interesting to watch, only time will tell which camp is right. Meanwhile, as far as I can see the only real answer is to get out there in your favourite cars and enjoy driving them!
@jerrywarren20073 жыл бұрын
With all those great Shmee resources, showing a spreadsheet would be nice. Let's compare for my Gen 2 NSX, almost 5 years on the road, 14,000 miles (no track time), one oil change for $340, 2 wheel/tire changeovers a year at $180 each. The second oil change is coming up. An extended warranty (5 years after the factory 4 year) would only be about $5000. I didn't get one because it's a Honda. So I am at about $1840 after almost 5 years. I did not include insurance here but it is easy to see how much lower the operating costs for an NSX are relative to other supercars.

It's my personal favorite out of your current cars and I definitely know how the depreciation isn't really as big a deal as it sounds. I do agree too, once the world goes full hybrid/electric, the petrol cars will rebound for sure in value. Also being a painter, the best thing for the custom color honestly is just a full respray. That's really the only way to not paint the front end over and over to get it to match. Even factory cars can be quite something to match.

Great video Tim. Had my 675LT 2 years and bought with 2 years warranty so not had that cost yet but when I do 2 years is now £9,600. Only extra costs over 2 years and 7k miles has been a set of tyres at £800 but I sold my old tyres for £500. The 2 services have been around £750 each and for me insurance £550 pa and road tax the same. Also it has averaged 25mpg and will do 36mpg on the motorway so considerably cheaper than other supercars in fuel. I have had only one warranty claim in 2 years for a lose coolant hose so would have been peanuts. My wings do need replacing and they are being upgraded to vented CF. Overall it costs way less per year than my F355 did and not much more than my 986 Boxster. Going forward the only significant cost is warranty at £5k pa but that is less than many cars repair bills, i recently spent £3,500 on my NA MX5 rust repairs. I am hearing so much that these are the McLaren sweet spot and will probably begin to appreciate from here on as availability dries up as many owners are long term keepers and see them as forever cars.

Fascinating stuff. A glimpse of a totally different life and world. My Hilux is older than this (totally different vehicle I know but illustrates the difference in world's I'm thinking about) and cost less than the McLaren servicing, warranty, insurance and tyres alone. Nevermind the car itself. Where I think it's strange is the number of problems supercar owners just accept as a quirk of owning such cars. Everything on my truck works perfectly and it's done far more miles and taken far more abuse than this McLaren. Dodgy headlights and corrosion after just 5 years?! I don't care how niche the thing is, when it cost more than my house does I'd expect it to last better. Just my thoughts. Others are available.
