Inhave an 05 wr 450 with at least 500 hour and the valves have never been out of adjustment. Yamaha’s really last when maintained and not abused. Great video, I learned quite a bit.

Back in the day we used to run our 2-stroke IT400/425/460/490F Yamaha's for 5-years! No kidding! And we rode on the Sierra Nevada mountain trails and in the desert HARD weekend after weekend. 8-hrs per day New piston and rings every two years...if needed! Rebore at NAPA Auto Parts machine shop. $50. Do it yourself at home! Coupla' hundred bucks total. Easy peasy. Maintenance: Change oil every two months. New spark plug if needed. Rev the bejeezus outa it to vibrate off the dried caked on mud! One of our mates just used cheap K-Mart 20W-50 engine oil for premix oil! LOL Radiator and all those hoses ...pffft! And no need to threaten them with tow rope to start on a cold morning! These way over complex, heavy 4-strokes are arguably worse on the trails, and last maybe one year before the huge bucks overhaul.

3:17 the wear on that bucket is from the auto-decomp pin on the exhaust cam. I've seen it before. The other buckets are good to go. Not bad to have to replace a single bucket at 300 hours.
@henripuustinen4642
@henripuustinen4642 Жыл бұрын
Exactly my experience with these engines as well. Usually, if the buckets are worn then they wont spin freely. In those cases you can almost always see hot spots on the cam lobes and need a serious magnet to remove the bucket.
@brad5664
@brad5664 Жыл бұрын
You are right it is from the decomp but your wrong on the other buckets they are all bad but 1 when you can feel with your finger nail the the circles in the middle of the bucket then they are no good ... and we did check cams and they are still in very good shape ..

haha my 2002 yamaha wr250f has 850mth on it and still has the original piston from the factory. Regarding the wear and tear of things around the engine, the only thing I had to repair so far was the carburetor flange (shrunk with age), the clutch plates with the clutch basket and springs, the carburetor has been jettisoned several times with thorough cleaning. I do regular checks of the entire engine after 150mth (piston, gearbox, clutch), valve clearances every 30mth, oil and filter change every 10-15mth (Yamalube, K&N), shock absorbers 20-30mth and everything else that is prescribed in the service book. I service everything myself (I'm a prodigy). As for the driving style, I give it a hard time when hardenduro riding in quarries. So I could say that the one who constructed it was perhaps the god himself. :-D and I know about a lot of people who have a WR and are in the same situation as me. It is important to always pet her before riding and give her love regularly.

I have a friend who races gncc and for an amateur.....he is a very solid competitor.....and has been doing it since he was on a 50cc ....His father (my best friend) is the mechanic....and he said one of the best factory KTM mechanics told him that the very best oil to run in a 4 stroke ...the very best ....is Rotella T5 .....that's is all they use......Said that they went from replacing clutches every race or every other race to now with the Rotella they only change then once or twice a season ....and these races are very hard on parts .....and that they had used every top synthetic oil on the market and the Rotella was the very best they had ever used ......so that's what I use in my 06 wr450 ....and no clutch issues thus far ....but I only ride mine wr450f ....no abuse from racing ....but my buddy who races swears by the stuff ....

Pretty sweet video! I am basically rebuilding my bike right now. I bought a CRF250X with an idling issue. And i broke into the head and the last guy set the valves so out of spec that ine of the valve buckets were pretty worn in, so too tight. And when i pit it all back together it ran better, but still had am idle issue. So i am tearing into the bike to get the carb, and honda set the bike up so wonderfully that i had to pull 60% of the bike apart to get to it! Hopefully the parts that i ordered finishes the job because if I am not pulling that thing apart again
@John_Doe_6996
@John_Doe_6996 Жыл бұрын
If it's anything like my CRF250R, you'll get very familiar with taking it apart. You likely need to just turn your idle up a bit, or adjust your fuel screw, or both.
@NOTTApro142
@NOTTApro142 Жыл бұрын
@@John_Doe_6996 yeah, I tried playing with the mixture and idle first. Didn’t do anything. Then i pulled the valves and redid them, that made it run better but did not fix the main issue, and when i pulled the carb apart the jets were all corroded and stuff, and it was jetted a little rich. So i replaced the jets with ones that would work for the new Yoshi i was putting on it, and the air-box mod. I was going to give it a start but when i turned the fuel on the main fuel connector into the carb started leaking. So I ordered new O rings, then i forgot to order the exhaust gasket with the Yoshi and jets so i am waiting on those. Should get here Tomorrow. And maybe, Just maybe i will get to hear it run this weekend.

I recently did a 2021 YZ 250 engine with 40 hours on it. It had some noises at idle. Turned out one of the gears had 3 bad, worn out teeth. Must have been a manufacturing defect, like a heat treatment gone bad or something. Only one gear was worn, and the bad teeth were next to each other. The metal from it also got into some bearings and made a rumble. But now she runs again.

I would find it very interesting if you measure everything according to the wear limits in the repair manual. A good machine shop with good instruments would probably help you with that. My thoughts about the valve buckets are that they looked perfect and moved freely. But it would be interesting to find out if the cams are worn in this case. Usually I find that the decomp pin is worn on these older bikes, making the bike a bit harder to start/kick over. Interesting "autopsy"!

Did you take a look at your oil pump by any chance? a month ago I bought a 2012 wr450 , it seems like it ingested a lot of aluminium and after hearing a change in engine noise I decided to do a teardown. Oil pump was really scratched, probably not giving enough pressure to the head and the valve buckets didnt look better than yours... for 50 dollars a piece definitely not a fun part to replace. I would really like to see how the oil pump looked on this engine because your bearings were in a way worse state than mine. Did you have any play in the main bearings? I have some marks on the crankshaft journals and tiny bit of play in bearings, gonna replace it all to be safe.

All from clutch abusing = Simple The clutch did the damage, the fork shifter gears were getting harder to mesh ,but lets grindem until we findem. All the heat up to the rod all from slipping and ? obviously for a while not knowing. Because people that know, even if broke in terms of $ ,wouldn't push an engine with a clutch slipping, it only makes it worse in a big hurry .Its a lite throttle thing not to much load Simply put, if you can't work out your clutch is slipping. Maybe you can show a simple video, on how to test under load ?

When a modern 4 stroke breaks the results can be catastrophic making the engine not even worth trying to rebuild, when a valve breaks it will destroy the engine, everything about riding a 4 stroke is it requires more of everything, more time for maintenance and more money for frequent oil changes, costly parts and expensive repairs but they sure are fun, hard to put a price on that.
