Great tutorial. Thanks for the ideas on how to integrate hood with full face masks. I bought the OTS Spectrum & Guardian masks at DEMA just to play with and try. This was something I was wondering and oddly you had the answer. Nice seeing you at the show! Best channel for dive info. I'm a newbie...but having fun. haha

So happy I watched this before buying a new hood! Mine does have glide skin on the inside - so turning it inside-out would work for a FFM :)

LakeHickoryScuba Yep, it happens. Especially with "autocorrect" and "autofill." (In the photography forum I belong to, the system is always trying to change "monolight" (a type of single-unit lighting device) to "moonlight." ...And it just did it here, too, but I "uncorrected" it.)

How do you equalise with the full face mask you put on and can you talk under water with it on without someone else having one o

I like to share what worked for me to help other with ideas. I tend to agree what works best for you so I'm just sharing for others to have some additional things to consider from my point of view full knowing everyone has different applications and comfort levels. I have the G.Divers IDM size M/L. I originally adjusted my nose plugs for clearing with the G.Divers skirt seal directly against my skin. I later tested a Sea Soft Full Face Mask hood as shown in this video. The Sea Soft FFM hood is great quality product however I didn't like the fit of the mask over the extra hood material and quickly notice it changes the distance between the nose plugs and your nostrils. Needless to say the Sea Soft full face mask didn't stay in my kit. I dive in Seattle in all season so in the colder months I have enjoyed my Water Proof H1 5/10mm hood size M/L so I purchased a second one soley for the cut out method mentioned in this video for my full face mask. I originally got a dressmakers makers pencil "fabric pencil" thinking that would write on the black neoprene however that didn't work at all. What does work extreamly well is basic Crayola chalk stick. They come out of the pack like a cigarite with no sharp end and the outside diameter is larger than a typical pencil sharpener allows for. Fortunately I had a contractors pencil sharpener that work out great as they have a larger opening for those flat wooden contractor pencils. You can easily pick one up for a buck or two at any big box home improvement store. I was able to get a very nice sharp tip. Next if you have the Ocean Reef extender frame you will want to leave or take it off. This will allow complete access to the G.Divers seal when fitted over your hood. I put the hood on then the G.Divers IDM and had a buddy trace an outline around the mask skirt and it work perfectly. When I was at the fabric store I picked up a very nice pair of Fiskars scissors for thick material full on knowing I didn't want to hack up an expensive dive hood with crappy scissors. I was able to remove the hood carefully taking car not to rub off the chalk line and made an easy clean cut enlarging the opening of my hood. What I like is that I have a very nice fitting hood for proper warmth and my G.Divers skirt seals against my skin so I always have a no fuss consistent equation year around. I can easily put this gear on without the aid of a buddy. This configuration may prove to be a benefit as I do not ever want to have to readjust those noise block nubs as it can be quite a bit of trial and error to get them adjusted exactly as you want. I also fell more comfortable with the G.Divers skirt against and under my chin. All around very happy with the fit so far. Well will see how it performs after I test dive the configuration. Once again thanks for sharing your knowledge Brian and happy diving! #SeattleRingHunter

Hey Jeff, thank you for your input. We welcome every diver's input on what works for them, as it may help other divers in the future. Truth be told, I learn just as much from others, and from their comments, as they claim to learn from me. I use to tell people that I have never had a great idea only stolen ideas from others. We can all learn from each other, regardless of what type of diver we are, or how long we have been diving. Also, we follow you as well here on KZbin and love the recovery videos. Keep them coming.

As a Seattle diver myself I am just starting my journey into use IDM. I purchased the Ocean Reef Space extender and ran into this problem right away. It wasn't until after doing some Googling that I came across this. My solution was to pick up SeaSoft FFM, remove the extender, and then cut it back so that it would seal against my face. I tried a couple of "test dives" just having the mask seal against the Glideskin, but honestly it just wasn't the same for me.The seal I get against my skin is far and above the seal I got against the glideskin. That being said PNW folks love their beards so I imagine they would have to rely more on the glideskin. Thank you again for this advice!

I just ordered it. I hope this works. I looks like it makes a good seal around your face.I just got the waterproof H1 and the circumference was to big on the left and right so the mask did not seal.

Have you done a video on equalizing in a full face mask or without pinching your nose, I've tried but haven't had any luck, without a full face that is, but I did it on accident once free diving but it was before I started scuba diving and haven't been able to do it since, thanks I enjoy learning from you videos btw
@LakeHickoryScuba6 жыл бұрын
I haven't but I will definetly put it on the list to produce. Thanks for the suggestion.

Orion R "Have you done a video on equalizing in a full face mask or without pinching your nose..." If you can't equalize using the swallowing, jaw wiggling, or yawning methods, you can still dive with most full-face masks because most of them have some method built in to allow you to pinch your nose or plug your nostrils. For example, the Scubapro and OTS Spectrum masks have soft nose pockets below the lenses that you pinch just like a regular half-mask, and the OTS Guardian and Ocean Reef Neptune have silicone plugs that you adjust to be just below your nostrils so that a slight upward push on the mask plugs your nose. The Kirby-Morgan bandmasks (a commercial-diving subset of a full-face mask) have a metal rod that protrudes from the lens frame that you push in to move the nostril plugs into place; it's the same system used on their diving helmets. Here's a link to Bryan's video from November of 2017 that talks about this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e16VfGeef8eZhaM

Need to get my prescription glasses. ..I got the frame to do that but the optical lab do not want to do the job for fear that they will break the frame!... have any of you had the same experience?
@LakeHickoryScuba7 жыл бұрын
If you are referring to the inserting the optical lense into the mask, it is a very simple process. Here is a link showing how to do it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/h2XYoppsh9ONjas

Hi guys. So, I've just bought the ocean reef ffm. And a "waterproof" D7 dry suit. And looking at the hood that came with the suit (H1)...not sure how well this will work with my mask. So after seeing this video I went on WATERPROOF site And they have a hood called Polar Evoluted H1 5/10 "SANDWICH" face seal hood From what I can see it has the glide skin around the face. In your opinion, would this be a good hood to use with the mask sealing OVER the hood.??? I'm not a big fan off taking a pair of scissors and cutting dive gear....... Any thoughts on this hood for this ffm aplication.
@LakeHickoryScuba5 жыл бұрын
Hello Joel. Unfortunately I can't comment on the hood from WaterProof. Its a situation where you may just have to try it to see if it works. Two companies that we deal with that make a specific hood for Full Face Mask are, Comfort Zone Scuba and SeaSoft. I have used both for many years, though I prefer the Comfort Zone Hood over the SeaSoft. If you do decided to try the WaterProof Hood, let us know how it works. We are a WaterProof dealer, but tend to sell other brands more often. So their hoods are not something that we know that much about. Sorry I couldn't be more help on this one.

You talked about trimming the mask; this would be the biggest limitation. Both the masks you are showing including most in the market have very limited trimming ability. Those two notches on the seam of the face seal; you cannot cut behind the second notch, otherwise it will fray.
@LakeHickoryScuba8 жыл бұрын
Depending on the quality of the hood, there are ways to seal the neoprene.
@seikibrian86416 жыл бұрын
If you have to cut above one of the stitches, just add new stitching. Sewing isn't exactly rocket science; most people should be able to figure it out.

Thanks for the kind words. As far as the chair goes, it is now a new dive site here in our lake. I have replaced both the chair and the desk. I'm what some would call tight and don't like to spend money, but that chair had seen better days.
