Accidents happen when you misuse the equipment, full face masks are made for surface swimming only not for diving. As you will always check your boat before going at sea, you will always check your diving equipments before going in the water. It’s just common sens. Use equipment related to your use, surface swimming: full face mask, deeper diving: conventional face mask with snorkel with which you can equilize ear pressure by pinching your nose.

Good video. Another point in favor of traditional masks: you can order prescription lenses to replace the plain glass lenses. Most companies have them in half increments, like choosing readers at the drug store. That makes a huge difference to those who are more than a little near or far sighted.
@karoljub2 жыл бұрын
+1. Proper sight is really an important aspect. Few more details on the subject 1. - Many traditional masks have separate (and replaceable) left and right eye glasses, so one can mount lenses with different correction factor for each eye. Some people need that. 2. - I hear from many divers who wear glasses that finding mask glasses with anything other than basic mono-focal lenses is huge hassle. I'm not sure if mask lenses for astigmatism and other more advanced types are unavailable, just hard to find, or something else, but one should not assume same availability as with glass lenses without researching it up. 3. - It is possible to wear contact lenses under both traditional and full face mask. I know many divers who do this. But if water starts leaking inside, shut your eyes before the water reaches them. Otherwise you risk a lens falling out of your eye and maybe even damaging the eye in the process. 4. - It's even possible to wear actual glasses under a traditional mask. (Not sure about full face ones. Maybe.) And yes, I wouldn't believe it either if I haven't seen it with my own eyes. But if you carefully pick glasses frame and a traditional mask frame which fit/work well together (and work well with your nose), the mask can actually hold the glasses in place. You would need to remove glasses ear hooks, and you probably want to replace them with some (very thin) band to hold them in place while you're putting the mask on or fiddling with it in the water. But yeah, it's possible, several years ago I was diving with an older guy who actually went through the trouble of setting all of that up for himself, and he was even diving with that setup, not just snorkeling. I would assume this method having even more potential to be dangerous than wearing contact lenses under a mask, I'm not recommending it at all, but it's interesting it's possible.

I've actually been using a full face mask for years now and as long as you get one made in Italy and not from Japan or China, the quality is so good that you don't have to worry about any of those concerns about mishaps and safety issues you mentioned. The quality is very high. I too have used it as low as 15 to 20 feet and have not experienced the issues you mentioned with depth either. Yes it pulls up a bit but nothing that causes a problem. Lastly someone mentioned needing to go with traditional if you need a prescription lens. I purchased mine from See the Sea, where they make prescription inserts that go inside for your exact prescription...not a stock lens like most standard swim masks. They match you prescription exact as it's basically a pair of glasses that clips inside the mask, so if you have astigmatism or bifocal or prism...they can make it. They also have a model that has a strap clip so you don't have to readjust the strap every time you use it. Very good product. You just have to make sure like any mask that you buy quality. I wouldn't suggest ever buying any mask that starts at the low end of cost that you mentioned. Both types of masks shouldn't be bought if you are paying less that 50 dollars because that most likely means you are buying an inferior product.

I have used full face mask for surface snorkeling at Maldives and I found it very comfortable and easy to use and breath through the nose. However one drawback with this type of mask is, when you try to dive below the surface, the volume of air trapped around your face is higher than a traditional mask. This puts a lot of pressure on your face and it is very uncomfortable. So for free diving when you wish to dive under water it is better to use a traditional mask. It takes some time to get used to holding the mouthpiece between your teeth and breathing through your mouth, though.

You explained the differences and safety concerns very well. I’m a PADI-certified advanced open water scuba diver who dives with a full-face mask. I would never suggest a full-face snorkel mask to ANYBODY., especially a young child or mentally challenged person. If that mask ever floods, the wearer could drown if he lacks the awareness and calm to quickly remove the straps. Many people panic when water floods a mask and hits their eyes, even in a conventional mask. I would have presented safety as the first issue in the video, since it’s the most critical subject. I prefer diving with a full-face mask, because it never fogs (regulator feeds dry air), avoids jaw fatigue from not having to use teeth to hold the regulator, and forms really well to my face (no leaks). However, I did pass PADI full-face certification following safety training for a flooded mask. Finally, you’re correct that a conventional mask and snorkel are much easier to pack than a full-face mask. And the conventional is much easier to clean.

What kind of full face mask did you buy? I'm looking at potentially buying one
@soundmind25552 жыл бұрын
@@brandonj.9638 I bought the OTS Guardian. Ocean Reef also makes a full face mask in a few different models. Both are very comfortable to wear and do what they promise. I went with the OTS, mostly because it has a reputation of dependability among rescue squads. It also includes the surface air valve (SAV), which allows you to breathe ambient air at the surface without diminishing your tank gas. I also like the ability to disconnect the second stage regulator from the OTS mask for rinsing and servicing. For the basic Ocean Reef mask, you must pay extra (about $60) for the SAV. By the way, the SAV on the OTS is near the top of the mask, while the one the Ocean Reef is near the regulator, close to the water (which seemed problematic to me). However, Ocean Reef makes it less expensive to own a comparable full face mask. The others are more expensive than the OTS and include features I thought were unnecessary. OTS makes the Spectrum, a mask that uses your existing second stage regulator for $449 and allows you to pinch your nose for easy equalization. However, you would need to apply anti-fog to the lenses. It was really helpful that my dive shop allowed me to demo the Guardian and Neptune in a pool. Finally, I recommend that if you do purchase a full face mask, you take part in safety training for a flooded mask via your preferred agency. Good luck!

I have the full face mask and enjoy snorkeling again. I have tried the traditional mask and snorkel multiple times and have gotten sick every time! A combination of breathing in the air directly to my throat and the motion and the salt water getting in my mouth made it uncomfortable and unenjoyable for me. I decided to give the full face mask a try and it made all the difference in the world for me. I also don't float very well so it is a sense of security knowing i can just relax and it keeps me in a breathable position. I never really have the desire to dive down deeper than the surface so that isn't a hindrance for me either. I agree with a lot of your points in the video but just because people use these doesn't mean they are amateurs like some of the comments suggest.

Thanks for this video…it was informative. I’ll likely have both because they do have advantages for different environments. One minor quibble that I have would be your last point about “experienced snorkelers” or others not respecting the full-mask..seriously, what mature person gives a F about peer pressure like that. Each person needs to make a decision based on relevant things like utility, etc…if a full-mask makes someone more confident and comfortable, that is def the set-up to go for…any dork that judges a person based on their gear is, well, a dork.
@earlgrey21302 жыл бұрын
It's because "experienced" snorklers are trying to keep newer snorklers from making mistakes. People have died from using full face masks. That alone should be a reason not to use one. And there are a million details where full face masks just give you a shitty experience and train you to do everything wrong (like breathing through your nose, when you need the nose closed to equalize). Full face snorkle masks are a fad where people who don't know better are sold shit products. THAT is why they're looked down upon. We just want everyone to be safe, have a good time and learn how to dive the right way. And that means using the right equipment. There is a reason the only people who use full face snorkle masks are complete beginners. Because they don't know what they don't know. Otherwise they wouldn't touch that crap with a ten foot pole.
@davidharris4534 ай бұрын
While I see the need for caution, the majority of snorkelers never or rarely leave the surface. The full face provides an incredible view, tons more comfort and even a certain amount of protection from contaminated water and such things as jellyfish. People have died from full face masks but several studies have actually found at no higher rate than traditional masks. So dismissing a piece of useful technology just because of unfounded personal prejudice without appropriate consideration or proof seems wrong and unnecessary and less than germane to the discussion.

Another tip: When coming to the water's surface using a traditional mask/snorkel, point your face up and the instant your head breaks the surface, *then* blow out the snorkel hard to clear it of water. With your head tilted back, it points the top of the snorkel downwards, which makes clearing it of water easier and more fully. Just after you blow out the snorkel, tilt your head back to look forward, again, and you'll be good to go with whatever you want to do, next. My scuba instructor taught me this tip. Of course, with today's more modern snorkels that have two one-way valves built into them (one at the top to prevent water getting into the snorkel, and the one at the bottom that clears any water that's in the snorkel, out), this "look up" technique isn't quite as necessary, but I still do it out of habit and caution.

So much more comfortable, and sturdy... i can stay out far longer without feeling fatigued. It makes the whole experience much more enjoyable as my focus is on the environment, not the gear. It's actually great on deep dives, I never even have to think about it... it just seals up the second i go down, and opens up the moment i hit the surface... It never gets water into the snorkel or the mask, never fogs up, and doesn't seem to have any buoyancy issues... the fact I can equalize the pressure really goes along way in helping it stay comfortable when exploring the bottom. While there are still some advantages to a traditional mask, I find the benefits of the equalizer far outweigh its drawbacks.

@@paulfreitag7772 The Ocean Reef Aria is a good mask, but really it comes down to what works best for you. The four most important things to consider are 1. is it designed to prevent you from re-breathing the same air (by far the most important consideration) 2. does it create a comfortable seal on your face that doesn't leak. 3. is it easy and natural to breathe in. 4. does it have a dry top snorkel to seal out water if your head dips below the waves. Anything after that is just personal preferences and "extras". I do personally like the ability to do the Valsalva maneuver to equalize ear pressure when diving down which is what sold me on the equalizer, but if you're not diving deep then you probably won't find it that important. I think on balance the full face will be my go to but will probably take both with me unless space is an issue.

I am a professional diver of over 50 years in the water and I have and use both. If you need to dive more than 1.5m then go mask and snorkel. To float around looking below the full face is great. However, I do not believe anyone has dived to 16m with the full face... at just 2m it creates a very uncomfortable - in fact painful - face squeeze. People should not get all hyped about any kind of mask killing them when snorkeling as they can all be removed in a split second. You can just lift it off so the idea of 'killer masks' is beyond ridiculous. The true killer is the fact that many people cannot swim well enough to be safe in open water... they kill themselves. Sad but true. Get proficient and confident on the water before you try snorkeling of any kind.

I like the traditional dive mask and snorkel. I've been a certified diver since 92 I've tried the full face snorkel mask do not like it at all and they are very expensive. One thing I found out when you buy one you have to get one that fits your face they come in different sizes. I will stick with the face mask and snorkel still have my original snorkel I bought when I first got into diving in 92 and it still works perfect

I had to quiit scuba diving, after having an injury, and subsequent hearing loss. I then bought a special mask, with ear cups, so thought I could dive again. However, I then had to get tooth implants, front, top of my mouth. I can't use the mask, because it puts pressure on my gum. Now, at least I can use the full face mask, so I'm thrilled, to at least be able to snorkel. I may try scuba diving, down to 10 ',, also.
@truthhurts68633 жыл бұрын
Having used both, I have to say that my first impressions where that the full-face was really great. However as I snorkel a lot, the full-face really showed it's flaws very quickly. The full face does not allow you to dive while using it, it clamps hard against your face and creates a build up of Co2 that very quickly makes you feel giddy. When I resurfaced I had to continually take the mask off to fill my lungs with air. It's only good for surface snorkelling. The other real issue I had is with the straps, they quickly loose their elasticity and have to keep getting adjusted until they finally are unable to stretch any further, the four prong strap attachment is also awkward to slide your head through. So as I said for surface use it's OK. But the old system with the mouth piece is much safer to use, you can easily expel the water through the tube after surfacing and you can dive properly. Yes it fogs up, but the higher end masks are a lot better and safer. The straps are not elasticated so do not stretch. If your mask comes off, there is no way that you can reattach the full face whereas the old style can easily be replaced under water and the water be removed. So hands down the traditional one wins. The full face is now left on the shelf gathering dust.

Not that I disagree with other replies, but to fight fogging (only fogging not CO2 buildup), you could just spit (or pour dish soap) in it before going in the water. There's a bunch of videos here shoving all the tips and tricks for mask defogging.

I used the full faced mask and nearly passed out. When I went to use it in a different location, I was warned not to use this mask because you are breathing back in your own carbon dioxide because the way it is designed, it is not well ventilated. I used a regular mask, and didn't have any issues. Park officials are warning the dangers of these masks. Please do research on the dangers of these masks.

You need to make sure it’s high quality. There are many brands that cheaply produce them but if you get the correct brand in a proper sports shop, you should have no problems and overall is better than the original snorkel and mask. May I ask where you got it from or the brand?

Full face mask is just a toy for kids, you just use it to watch from the surface. Once you descend you need to be able to use a normal mask without keeping the snorkel in your mouth: first rule of freediving. A full mask doesn't even allow you to equalize your eardrums. It's just a toy, and anybody tries to go down every now on, I would recommend to learn from the beginning with a normal mask, even when snorkelling.
@ILoveFountainPens4 ай бұрын
Something to consider as well, is if the full face mask is latex free, which it looks like it is, based on the materials that it’s made with, vs the latex in the rubber for the traditional mask and snorkel.

My mother asked me for a snorkel/fins set for Christmas. Neither of us know anything about snorkeling, or diving. When I started researching them I came across the full mask and thought that would be ideal since she is older and wears dentures. However, the idea of my mother passing out from lack of O2, or not being able to remove it as quickly as possible is what convinced me to get her the traditional set. Thank you so much for making this video! EDIT- BTW, my mother lives in Oceanside lol

I only use the mask for surface snorkeling so in this case I would say the full face is a bit better. The points made in this video are relevant but they are a bit too negative towards the full face imo, pretty much all points are usually not a big deal imo, and they miss a couple of good points for the full face mask too. First you have a wider and better view. Also I don't think there is much CO2 building inside, if it's really badly set up you will feel it before it becomes dangerous anyway imo. It does make you float which is a minus if you dive but a plus if you want to stay at the surface. And as you mentionned, you can't talk easily with it when outside the water, but you still can, while on the other hand, when INSIDE the water you can actually talk with it and possibly be understood by someone else, which is totally impossible with a traditional mask. So if you only want to do surface snorkeling I would say the full face mask has a small advantage, else the traditional mask is better. Regarding the price it's not that much expensive. Mine is a Subea Easybreath 500 from Decathlon and it costs 35 US$, 3000 JP yen where I live.

"better image" hell I dont care about what others think about me 😂 I aint a professional diver whatsoever, I do this for fun once in a while... This aint a fashion show, It's recreational snorkeling, who cares about the looks. It's pretty simple to compare: The traditional is more safe, but less comfortable. The new ones are the opposite, and to me have a bigger "field of view" whereas everything appears more clear due to the fact that the glass doesnt fog.

Great video! We agree with your ratings. I do know people who are less comfortable in the water and have struggled with traditional masks and snorkels, but have been able to enjoy snorkeling with a full face mask. I think of full face masks as snorkeling with training wheels, it gives you a taste of the experience, but is limited. However, I think you make a great point about starting with a traditional mask so that you can increase your skills and ultimately enjoy the underwater world so much more. Thanks for the videos. I would say that I really begun snorkelling with a full face mask, part of it being that were I usually go (notrhen french britain) there is'nt much to see (you need to go in the few rocky areas or go to see during the high tide) and as such, traditional masks get easily discarded partly because of thin sand making shallow waters opaque. I bough mine on a whim at a well-known french sport equipment chain for 25€ and it works well, but thanks for the advice, I won't use it anymore before replacing the side missing valve, and yes you have a point, the ligthest depth (even 3m or 9feet) makes it uncomfortable because fo pressure. For one point I would say that despite having it for more than 3 years, the straps are in near perfect condition and way more comfortable than a traditional mask. Thanks a lot for the videos, I learn a lot from them

I have both types and the co2 concern is 100% correct. I have had to stop snorkeling with the full faced mask because it became difficult to breathe.
