Great video, thank you. Very important that when you attach your snorkel to the mask you make sure that the opening for the drain valve is facing backwards. So as Joe says usually this will mean fixing on the left. If you don’t do this there is chance that the snorkel won’t drain properly. Then when you take your next breath you may breath in water. This can be pretty scary. But if your snorkels fitted properly you won’t have a problem. It’s a little thing and very simple but its very important.

More advanced safety: We’ve also got an important piece of safety advice regarding the snorkel. Most freedivers go underwater with their snorkel in their mouth. When you do this, the water doesn’t rush into your mouth because your tongue is actively blocking the hole in the snorkel. If you were to black out underwater, your tongue would no longer actively block this hole - it would go limp like everything else. So water would rush into your mouth and possibly into your lungs. Diving underwater with the snorkel in your mouth violates the No. 1 rule of freediving safety - to always protect the airway. Here are three simple suggestions to increase your safety while freediving: Dive one-up one-down; be close enough to grab your buddy when he or she surfaces. Watch your buddy for no less than 30 seconds every time he or she surfaces. Don’t free dive over-weighted. At the surface do a relaxed exhalation, like a sigh. If you sink, you’re wearing too much weight. Keep taking off weight one pound at a time until you can pass this test.

I swim in the Irish Sea and watched your video, followed all your steps and once I stopped dry-wretching, at the end of the 25 mins I was snorkelling! Saw a few crabs on the bottom, wasn't expecting much as I was still able to put my feet down. Will definitely be able to buy & use my own snorkel from now on! No you should never teach people to keep the snorkel in their mouth, shallow water blackouts can happen at any depth and that snorkel will act as a funnel, especially new divers that generally don’t know their limits.
@rorydimov405
@rorydimov405 3 жыл бұрын
@@samuelmartin293 Sorry Sam but if you black out under water, I don't care if you have a snorkel in your mouth or not, that water is going straight into your mouth/lungs when your body tries to resume breathing as it will still be underwater. The big takeaway here is to not form bad (potentially dangerous) habits. If you get used to taking a shallow dive while snorkeling eventually you may find yourself going deeper and deeper with the snorkel in your mouth. If you learn to never dive with it in your mouth it is a non-issue.

Go to waist deep water first to test your body floatation and confidence. Just calm down. Then go deeper water if you float so well. Invest in good snorkeler set. TUSA for mask and snorkel. Cressi Sub for the slip on fin. They're v good. Avoid heavy rubber fin. They're heavy and can make you cramp. If snorkel for hours. Eat two bananas. If you cramp easily, use a life jacket. Absolutely!!! Don’t ever dive with your snorkel in your mouth. I have been Freediving for 2 years. Annoys me when people dive with the snorkel in the mouth

Thanks for the video. One of the best videos I have ever seen about snorkerling, super well-explained, step-by-step, direct to the point. And an important detail: English language very well spoken and all understood by me, as a Portuguese speaker. Our best regards, from São Paulo City, Brazil.

I'm in fifth grade this year and I haven't travelled in like 4 years lol. My family is preparing to take a trip to Oahu! I love swimming and I've been doing it for 6 years. I thought that since I was already in level 10 and I practically couldn't get much better, I would be great at this snorkel stuff. When I went to a beach recently though, I realized I developed anxiety when I couldn't see what was happening underwater. That's why I really want to learn snorkelling, what a great tutorial, thanks!

true, when snorkeling we must always pay attention to the surrounding there is one time when I am too focused looking at the coral underwater until I do not aware that I already swim very far from my group furthermore at that time the waves is quite strong so it is really hard for me to turn back btw, for you guys who want to have fun snorkeling time, you can come to redang island, malaysia :)

Hi joe.. Just had 2 days of fun snorkeling and practicing with my new fins.. getting comfortable now, but not yet 100% confident... I still swim with vest on and friends nearby when navigating really deep seas(i guess still shallow for your standards hehe). I'll search in your channel in case you have video tips about beginners trying deep water snorkeling.. I still hold on tight to life preserver when adjusting my mask in the deep sea coz my legs below going crazy and it distracts me or get back to the shallow part to stand and do my thing.. hehe.. lovin this channel..

no its basically just a pipe so you dont have to bring your face out of the water. you cannot have to long of a pipe either because your lungs wont be able to push the water out.

you are supposed to do long breath, so you are not just pushing a little bit of air and rebreathing the same thing over and over again.

@@fibiger12 do not force yourself too much to breathe in/out to the *extreme* . sadly i do not remember the scientific name in English, but if you take in too much oxygen, you can trick your body into thinking you dont need to breathe for a long time, then you can pass-out underwater. it is named overventilating, hyperventilating or something. many people in poor countries do this to dive deep underwater for a long time without equipment, but it is very dangerous.
