I remember when USAirways has the non-stops to London, Paris, and Frankfurt. Those were the days of travel from Pittsburgh.Sad that the Allegheny Co. Commissioners and USAirways couldn't work out their differences. This airport is so under-used in America. What a shame.
@thejazzguy137 жыл бұрын
I completely agree. But in the modern air industry, I think PIT as a hub would've been dismantled anyways down the line. Its just how it is now unfortunately. That's where airlines such as Southwest come in greatly now because they don't follow the hub and spoke system like the others. Great comment and thanks for watching!

I remember the end of the years when, if it had an airport, you could fly there from Pittsburgh. From my home in Pittsburgh to our cabin 2 hours north of Ottawa would take about five hours, door to door. Visit family in Dayton? Sure. Ithaca? Of course! Huntington, WV? Why not? Inlaws across the pond? Change planes in Heathrow and you’ll be there for supper. US Air served every little field in Pennsylvania from there. Now i have to change planes to go everywhere aforementioned with at least one plane change, almost always in an asinine location. Flew to Ottawa, had to fly through Detroit and Toronto, flying through three states twice, and was still the fastest option.

When I come back from a large airport like Chicago, New York, Newark, or San Francisco, I am coming back to a ghost town. It feels eerily quiet in PIT. Last time I came back from a trip, we were the only plane in the entire airport!

A few years ago BA did operate a direct flight from LHR, later transferred to LGW. Unfortunately, BA did not find the route profitable and it was abandoned. Later US Airways operated a service from LGW to Pittsburgh. I can remember the last time I flew this route to London the cabin was only about a quarter full. Not long after that US Airways closed their operation on this route. It's strange how London/ Pittsburgh has never worked out.

The only times I ever flew across the Atlantic or the Pacific was on a 4-engine 707 back in the 70s. When you're over *nothing* but water for over 5 hours for the Atlantic or 8-10 hours over the Pacific, I WANT 4 damn engines!! Yeah I know about ETOPS, to HELL with that.. If for some reason, I ever have an opportunity to go to Europe again, it will be on a four-engine aircraft, which if I fly a US carrier would only be a 747.. Sad you have to fly a European/Arabic airline to get a A340 or A380...
@Altenholz7 жыл бұрын
Agree. Last time i flew a similar route was back in 2001 from Frankfurt to Philadelphia visiting my german aunt living in NJ. Did that trip with Lufthansa an A 340-200 ( still at that time only 5 left in service for LH ) and meanwhile retired.
@steveharris17407 жыл бұрын
All U.S. carriers have decommissioned the 747 in favor of more fuel efficient jets like the 777, 787, and brand new A330 Neo. It is the same reason why U.S. carriers will never use the A380...so if you are going to stick with U.S. carriers it will have to be a two engine plane. You could always book flights through Air France, Lufthansa, and British Airways who use A340, A380, and 747.
@martinjuulandersen96946 жыл бұрын
Steve H. Past 2020 A340 with European carriers will be gone same goes with the 747-400 . Lufthansa still has the B747-8 though. The A380 is also is a bit questionablw whether or not they will be around in the future, do to cost effiency. Mayalasia Airlines parked 5 of theirs. But you always sail I suppose...

What do you think about the future of the service? Condor released season PIT to Frankfurt flights, and WOW Air launched year round transatlantic Reykjavik flights. Do you think more competition will be better or worse for Delta?
@thejazzguy137 жыл бұрын
Well, I think the competition definitely won't help Delta out, but I do think they're still good with the seasonal service. I think there's enough demand that all three routes can survive, and I strongly believe PIT could also add a London route as well. That'd probably be the most popular option. Business travelers also are more likely to choose Delta over leisure carriers like WOW and Condor (even though they offer business class). I flew this flight back and forth and both times the business class was booked solid. I do think though any hope of the service going year round now is shot for PIT. Thanks for the comment and for watching!

I'm guessing the "chainsaw" noise is the PTU equalizing hydraulic pressure when one of the engines was shut down to save fuel during the taxi. It seems to start about the right time for it to be PTU. But I've never heard one sound like that... ESPECIALLY on a Boeing aircraft. (They sound kinda like a mix of an old Dodge starter and a dog barking on A320's.) This aircraft entered service in early 1998 with TWA during their restructuring, became part of American during the takeover, and was sold to Delta in 2001. It has been in service for almost 19 years. Perhaps it's time to service or replace the PTU...
@jeanlucglorieux7 жыл бұрын
Starting next year (2018), Delta Airlines will use a wide-body Boeing 767-300 for this route, which will be a definite improvement. Unfortunately, they will also shorten by nearly a month the time period for which this flight operates, with the last flight taking place on September 4, instead of the end of September. Flight numbers will also be changed from DL96 to DL124 for the Pittsburgh to Paris flight and from DL97 to DL125 for the Paris to Pittsburgh flight.

Thanks! Yah tell me about it...it truly is not that bad. I think a lot of people are comparing this flight and plane to their domestic flights across the US - which is inaccurate. Delta uses completely different models and interiors of the 757 for their transatlantic routes, so it's a much better experience (just like flying any wide body overseas).

Luc Gruijters The 757 is great plane for higher density domestic runs with a great MTOW. No doubt about that. However, if I book full fare on a full service carrier and luck of the draw puts me on a narrow body overseas, yes I'd be disappointed. If it were a discount carrier, I'd understand. But I suppose PIT to CDG probably isn't the highest capacity run either. Anyways, was just saying...I wouldn't like it.

It's however not the longest 757 service around; that belongs to a United Airlines flight from EWR-TXL (around 9 hours).

I've been on the Norwegian Boeing 737 transatlantic crossing from SWF-DUB. It was ok, but no IFE is a killer for a 6+ hour flight.

I always notice that when I'm home I stir my coffee clockwise but when I'm in an awkward spot like on a plane, I stir it counterclockwise. You do too. It's almost like forgetting how to do simple things when in a different environment.

I had to go through customs only in Paris. Then I got my bags, went to T2D, checked in again and went through security. No customs in Kraków...as you commented on that video, Poland and France are part of the EU. Thanks for watching!

Yah, Pittsburgh's customs were great...took maybe 10-20 minutes. Much better than every other US airport I've arrived at.

The 757 is a nice plane for 2-3 hr domestic flights, but I couldn't imagine being out over the open ocean in one for hours on end.... It's JUST BARELY compliant with E-TOPS standards, and could easily get in trouble... I'll stick with it's bigger brothers, the 767ER & 777ER

I’m surprised they used this long route with a single aisle aircraft and from a non Delta hub location!

I never knew that a 757 could fly that far

All the jetliner aircraft have the range ..airlines just prefer larger jets to fill more seats which makes them more money on international flights. The 757 is sometimes used on London & Paris routes when there is not enough people to fill a larger jetliner, which saves them money on fuel.

MasterPilot10 I've done it transatlantic.

British airways does an a320 or 19 can’t remember from London to jfk with a stop in Shannon Ireland for pre customs and fuel.. and it has a special seating setup.. think it’s like 30-40 something seats..
