Is Aps-c the middle man out? What is the point of this crop system? Full frame is what the professionals use, best image quality and dynamic range. Micro four thirds is the much smaller, lighter and cheaper alternative, with advantages like superior stabilization. Aps-c has worse image quality than full frame, but is also bigger and has worse stabilization than m4/3. If you were building a 2 kit system, I'm not sure one of those should be aps-c. To Canon, Sony and Nikon aps-c is an afterthought to their full frame lineup. And Fuji is full of quirks.

I switched from the Fuji X-H2 to the Nikon Z8, but I still feel like APS-C is a better compromise. More reach than FF for wildlife, but still more background blur and better image quality than Micro four thirds, for other things. If Nikon were to release a stacked APS-C camera with the AF system of the Z8/Z9, I'd definitely get one as a second body.

@@Snapit551 I would say so. I pretty much only shoot wildlife, and despite going from 750mm FF equivalent (500mm Tamron) to 600mm on FF, there's much more detail in the images and the camera pretty much always nails the focus, which wasn't the case with the Fuji.

I see the biggest advantages of APS-C similar, plus lenses are cheaper (10-20 vs 16-35, 17-55 vs 24-105, 50mm vs 100mm macro,...) and you get in the tele range a 1,5 or 1,6x Teleconverter without additional optical losses. A good full frame camera with usable video and wildlife specs was not affordable yet and the R7 was for me the best compromise to keep the price low enough, get more reach and at least 1080p120 and 4k60.

Fuji IBIS is clearly optimized for photography, and pretty impressive for that purpose. You can easily do 1/4th shots that come out sharp, depending on lens. But it is jerky for vlogging. I'd say they are quite comparable. The sweet spot lies somewhere between the two. What's great about Micro Four Thirds (M43) is the competition between two manufacturers-it has led to a very comprehensive and complete lens lineup. Fujifilm is developing nicely, but it isn't quite there yet. Also, instead of a Fujifilm XF50-140mm F2.8, one could use a full-frame (FF) 70-200mm F4. Same dimensions, similar weight, but the FF lens projects onto a significantly larger sensor. In the M43 realm, one can use very convenient, small yet high-quality prime lenses for such tasks. These can be obtained for approximately EUR/USD 300.

I actually came to the conclusion that APS-C (or Fuji rather because any other APS-C system is half arsed like you pointed out!)... is the sweet spot. I've shot all 3 digital sensor formats, for sure the larger the sensor the better IQ bla bla, but all of that comes at a cost in terms of price, weight and size. I do all my professional work on the XH2S and have fast prime and zoom lenses that are a fraction of the cost and weight of FF equivalents (I never liked using 70-200's on FF, huge lenses but the XF50-140 is a dream lens). The drop in IQ, dynamic range and toneh on APS-C is an acceptable trade for the benefits (and no client has ever asked for higher IQ, dynamic range or toneh). I simply would like Canikony to up there APS-C game so that I could have some CHOICE. If you want APS-C then realistically you only have one place to go and that's Fuji, the rest SUCK on this sensor size.

Canon APS-C user here. I really like the system, but i enjoy a lot of adapted EF or vintage glass and only one APS-C lens, the old 17-55 IS USM. I dont see at least canon too bad for APS-C, you just have to know what you are doing with. On many occasions my R7 is also used in 4k60 crop mode (basically smaller than 1" sensor then), and thats the reason for many APS-C cameras in general.... range extender/teleconverter. Therefor i dont even mind the high pixel densities of 32 and 40MP on APS-C, nice performance if you crop a lot and more details left if you denoise it in post.
@SummersSnaps
@SummersSnaps 11 ай бұрын
@@harrison00xXx Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't the use of the EF adapter with EF glass nerf the potential of the R7 quite a fair bit? The electronic contacts for the R7 are 12, the adapter 8, that's 4 electronic points doing nothing when adapting glass vs using native RF glass. I think Jordan from PetaPixel (or then DPreview) touched upon this briefly, stating AF was nowhere near as good with the EF adapter. I'm guessing the redundant 4 electronic points that are not being utilized with an adapter and EF glass are performance based. So then if you want to build 'a proper' RF system (exploiting the system fully), the only RF-S glass currently seems extremely thin, basically a bunch of slow travel glass, and all the fast glass for RF is FF with jaw dropping price tags (that actually also don't perform that well on APS-C sensors). It saddens me to see companies like Sirui release new fast and affordable f1.2 primes for every APS-C platform but Canon. I seriously would have invested in a R7 already, to adapt my current Sigma 18-35 as well as take advantage of 3rd party glass like this. Their closing off the mount was a seriously bad move, especially seeing as they have done nothing in terms of serious RF-S development. The contrast of glass available (and prices) from Fuji just blows them out of the water, which is why I see Fuji ASP-C being really the best option if that is your sensor of choice (Sony second).

@@SummersSnaps When it comes to synced Stabiliser, yes it nerfs the R7s performance a lot (a main selling point, IBIS is pretty useless then except for video) But unstabilised glass, no matter which kind from about 16-150mm, profits a lot from the R7 IBIS. Little real world example: My Canon EF-S 17-55 2.8 IS USM... has something like a first gen IS, and the R7 doesnt allow to use IBIS instead, so i have to stick with an old optical stabiliser. A Sigma 17-50mm 2.8, unstabilised glass on the other hand, is better stabilised via IBIS than the old EF-S lens. For Autofocus, all i can say is, most DSLR lenses have improved a lot on Canon Mirrorless, except some (probably intentional) issues with some well known 3rd party lenses (Sigma 150-600C/S heavy AF-C issues, Sigma 10-20 4-5.6 and 3.5 version freaking out IBIS,...)

APS-C is best balance. I can have large fast zooms, I can have long telephotos and I can have very small light setup if I want. And output is right there. Better than M4/3 and breathing on FF back. And unless you are willing to invest a LOT into FF and carry larger heavier lenses, APS-C is the winner. Fuji continues with former Pentax strategy of having APS-C for general usage and then medium format for those who want the most resolution. Canon R7 is the first interesting Canon, but yes they lack lenses. Nikon APS-C is joke without IBIS and deserves no attention. Sony has nice A6700, but they lack body comparable to Fuji X-H2. In the end i decided to sell the RP + RF 50 1.8, as nice and awesome this little combo was. Except for a few nice full frame primes, there is nothing even close to "worth its price" in the RF lineup. The 200-800 might change something, but 2500$ is still pretty hefty despite its pretty nice zoom range. With all else being same, a larger sensor will have more DR, simply due to better noise performance and thus, detail in the shadows. Obviously all are not created equally. The Fuji XH2S had a 14bit ADC in comparison to 12bit on pretty much all other consumer cameras, and thus was able to match FF DR. The Canon FF cameras have DR comparable to older MFT cameras, simply due to poor highlight retention. MFT cameras like the G9II and GH6 have DR boost (called DGO in Arri and Canon cinema cameras) come very close to matching FF in DR. The C70 uses both the technologies mentioned (14 bit and DGO) and thus is able to beat most FF cameras in DR.

I guess EF-M users switched too much to 3rd party glass, 2nd hand etc, so the EOS-M system doesnt make financially sense anymore, especially since they packed in the EOS-M system really nice performance for "little" money. If i would buy the EOS-M system nowadays, i would look for a whole set 2nd hand/private and for a good price where all the interesting/wanted EF-M lenses are included. camera or lenses alone have still some value on the market, but sets especially "outdated" ones like a M6 II + some lenses are horrendous low in price.

I resorted to full frame and actually thought that lens would work on a 5D III. More disappointment. I should have read the fine print. I then waited for an EOS-R FF camera with great stabilisation , video specs including uncapped recording but gave up with the R6 failed to remove the cap. Bought a LUMIX G9. My future cameras are likely to be LUMIX. They basically pack as much as is technically possible into their cameras: they don’t play product/ market segmentation games or or cripple hammers. My lesson is that if we stop expecting Canon to meet the needs and expectations of amateurs and enthusiasts, the world is a happier place. We just need to move to a brand that does.

But as i had the R7 already (MUCH better camera, despite being APS-C!!!) i found a good deal on the 17-55, and its basically the ONLY (!!!) fast zoom lens for APS-C from canon, EVER! And its not too bad, only the Sigma 18-35 1.8 beats it in corner sharpness and image quality, but for substantial downsides such as no optical IS and very heavy/big. I hope Canon or any 3rd party make a RF-S equivalent some day, better now than later. Probably even a bit shifted like 20-80 2.8 or 14-45mm 2.8, but compact and better stabilized than the aged, nearly "vintage" EF-S 17-55. Btw depending on your EOS R you had, you could have used the 4k video mode on the 17-55 "uncropped" since the 4k video crop on some EOS R cameras such as R and RP are pretty much exactly APS-C sized. But i can understand you how dissapointed you must have been realizing this nice little 2.8 pesudo L (glass....) plastic boy is just APS-C. Alternatively you could have also used it without electrical connections (so no AF, no stopping down...) to use the full imaging circle which is nearly filling full frame, but with heavy vignette and horrendous corner sharpness (as expected...)

APS-C does seem like an afterthought a lot of the time with Canon and Nikon. Though, that's the format I tend to use for video due to cost. Currently a Sony A6000 as a webcam I got for cheap. A used Nikon Z30 for my video rig after moving on from Canon EF-M recently. I pretty much only use a GoPro for vlogging and POV style content so not too concerned with the lack of IBIS in my big cameras. Plus a Nikon Z5 for photos but decent enough for video as needed.

Chelsea and Tony Northrup just did a wildlife video with some MFT love; but the end result was an APSC system (Canon R7) that was much less expensive, smaller and lighter than an OM1 system. Results tended to favor the OM1, but not always by much. I’m a MFT fan, but some of the Sony APSC options do look appealing; not as heavy or big as Panasonics, and often lenses pretty much same size..though stab generally less and likely not as weatherproof. On the video side both strong.

I kind of agree with this. My reasoning is... To get the flagship cameras and lenses in FF you pay a fortune and they are heavier then heck...or you have to get the dumbed down entry cameras and carp lenses to loose the price and weight. With MFT (om1), I get a flagship camera with features that even the top cameras do not have and pro lenses with a much lower weight and price. MFT has been a bit behind the latest FF cameras in AF but I just tested the firmware 1.7 and my biggest grip with bird subject detect has been totally fixed. I also like the fact that when the OM System engineers implement something, they do it right the first time. Pro capture is a example of this that everyone now has but none match the OM1. Plus I get Live ND, Live composite, HHHR, Live GND, Star Focus, Focus Stacking that works with Flash, 12 stops of Exposure comp... and more. Nothing else comes close... (and yes, I realize there are compromises as well)

Agreed, I'd use APSC for a travel cam, like the XT5. But for professional work there's nothing apsc is doing better than the other two sensors. I bought the ZV-E1 wanting to be able to use S35 cinema glass with a PL adapter AND to use the Laowa Nanomorph S35 anamorphic lenses with it.. so the work around is.. keep it in full frame 4k mode and just use the clear image zoom feature to capture that smaller S35 area of the sensor.. or having it on like dynamic active mode.. anyhow,, at least you can stay in 4k mode that way

You're right about aps-c, and the major shortcoming, the red-headed stepchild and simultaneous elephant in the room, no good lenses. There is one useful Canon camera, though. The Canon EOS 90D is a wildlife sleeper. You have to use full frame glass but you get the 1.5 times multiplier for the lenses and the 32.5MP resolution gives fantastic detail. So a lens like the Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS II USM becomes 150-600mm effectively. The Fuji X-H2 might also be a good wildlife camera, but I doubt if there's the equivalent of the Canon L glass for it. Of course, with gigantic full frame lenses hanging off the front, there's no weight advantage. The only thing you gain is effective reach. If you look at the eBay prices, you will see that the 90D is in high demand.

To be honest, Sony a6600 + Sony 70-350 lens is not a bad combo for wildlife shooting. I guess a6700 would be even better (cause of the 4k 120p and 10 bit and a way better focusing system), just haven't decided to buy it yet. The IBIS is crappy, so handhelding is not an option (at least not a good one), but the setup is lightweight, so I tried using it with a gimbal - Zhiyun Crane 2 - and it worked surprisingly well. Of course you should need to rebalance gimbal eveytime you change your zoom, but since I'm focused on shooting birds or small flowers and insects anyway, I just balance it at 350 mm position and am good to go. Usually I am shooting at 1080p 100 fps/100 mb/s mode. Never tried any of the 3/4 cameras though. And maybe something like ZV E1 or A7SIII would work even better, they do have an APSC mode after all, just am talking about things I have tried. For wildlife photo though I'm using my A7III with Sony 200-600 lens. You need to rise the ISO high to be able to get a decent shutter speed for fast moving animals (1/1000 at least), but high ISO with APS-C matrix brings too much noise to enjoy the picture. Using 200-600 lens for video is only possible with a tripod in my opinion.

From photography perspective, we can do tiny of math to proof. Let's start from sensor size: FF 36*24=864 APSC 24*16=384 M43 18*14=252 Then we need to calculate relative sensor size multiplier: FF-APSC 864/384=2.25 APSC-M43 384/252=1.52 FF-M43 864/252=3.42 That multiplier shows us there is not to much sense to go from m43 to aps-c. But there is huge IQ grow from m43 to FF or significant from aps-c to FF. As result: - aps-c good enough as single camera system to start from something, it's not good in anything at combines lacks from both of FF and m43. There is compromises but no advantages, but again it might be balanced starting point. - m43 and FF work very well in combination where you can pick system per your goal. So yes, crop is the worst, but it's brilliant to start from.

Totally agree. Just compare 1) m43 + FF with 2) APS-C + MF. 1) covers every imaginable aspect of photography (now even wild life photographers can shoot hand-held!). 2) is quite interesting regarding Fujifilm APS-C but not regarding MF - the latter is expensive (think of the lenses) and offers hardly anything additional. I have been using m43 and Nikon FF for 10+ years and could not be happier.

X-T5, with a ton of excellent primes, and a couple zooms. Cheaper, lighter, and image quality that matched my Sony A7IV. Couldn’t be happier. But that said, I don’t do video at all, so may not be impacted by the issues you have with stabilization.

Nothing wrong with L lenses on a aps-c. Plus you get the added reach. Fantastic on the good old Canon 80d

They’re just HUGE when you can get the same performance out of a Canon M6 mark ii with an ef-m lens while carrying it in your pocket.

There is nothing wrong with Canon kit lenses. People tend to put them down but I still have to come across a technically bad image shot with them by a competent photographer.

You got to be kidding. Kit lens, man your aim is low. Besides a technical good shot can be an artistic shit shot. With a kit lens it almost always is. I assume you won`t understand because of you statement. But i guess i can try.

You're totally right. Full frame is the best in certain categories, and MFT is the best in certain other categories. APSC isn't the best of any category.

Literally came to the exact same conclusion. Whenever I use APS-C it kills me that it's not my R8 full-frame, and there are no APS-C lightweight lenses good enough to be worth the loss. For travel I have a M43rds G100 (underrated gem for photography) with the magical 14-140 travel superzoom which is an amazing combo, weighing less in total than an FF telephoto. To make APS-C worthwhile it needs to be an A6700-sized body or smaller, with a lightweight, small and crisp f4.5 superzoom either 8x or 10x. That would replace a lot of what makes M43 great without bumping into lightweight FF like the R8 and A7C.

So... I guess no one is going to talk about the 1/1.28 sensor size that just shot the entire Apple Event? 🤷🏽‍♂ Sensor size is becoming irrelevant each year as technology pushes on! The debate about sensor size maybe 10 years ago actually meant something however, that's no longer the case. Lastly, we must also realize that picture quality is not the end all be all in film or even vlogging. Just like sensor size, it's beginning to mean less and less as even the lowest QUALITY sensors are "good enough". Currently if you have Medium Format, Full Frame, APS-C, Micro4/3 or even 1/1.28 the question is, what are you doing with that sensor? Are you making memories with it, creating content with it.. or debating over which is better? My encouragement to everyone is to USE whatever you have to it's fullest (by learning lighting, composition, editing, color grading and story-telling) and it TRULY (in most cases) won't even matter and no one will care or even be able to tell. (just like the Apple event!) (This is my opinion)

I bought a FF Canon d5 Mii for $300 and found EF lenses cheap, two are new. My whole rig Cam, five lenses cost under $1000. I think older cams are going to get even cheaper now that Canon is going to the RF mount and discontinuing their EF line. I'll stick with my old heavy rig because it works well for the landscape/seascape photography.

Ricoh GR II is one stop from good FF on dynamic range and is perfect on SNR up to ISO 800, so for photos it is very good despite it is APS-C. As a system FF is of course better because have a larger sensor.

I was shooting GH2 and was dying for an upgrade. But when the GH3 launched, I thought Lumix lost the plot. The size difference was too much for contemplate. In the end, I got an A7 instead. Smaller body, larger sensor.

While he is entitled to his opinion, Modern APSCs are not just nearly as good, but AS GOOD as any Full Frame out there, and even better when it comes to the extra reach.
