Boy, was this timely for me. I've been shooting with Fuji for several years now, but have been toying with the idea of changing to full frame (better autofocus with Sony, mainly. I do a lot of street photography). There's so many more options now than there were when I switched from Canon aps-c to Fuji. But I made the switch mostly because weight was a factor for me and it still is. The Sony A7IV body may not be much heavier, but the lenses are. And when I look at your stunning images, I recognize that any deficiencies with my images are because of me, not the camera system I'm using.

These are not simple choices to make indeed. Street photography is of course much more dependent on great autofocus with moving subjects and the perfect scene only lasts a fraction of a second. I can also imagine that the potential for greater depth of field is a plus when moving to full frame in that situation. If you would stick with f/4 lenses on FF to get the same out of focus as on f/2.8 on APS-C the weight and size are also similar or smaller (12-24 f4 is 240g lighter and 24-70 f4 is 229 g lighter than their Fuji 2.8 equivalent lenses). But personally I would not move to FF when you already have all the lenses for Fuji (and you are happy with those of course) as there is quite a cost involved. Maybe the AF currently isn't perfect, but wait a few years and they will be on par with the A74 now.

Thanks for the comment, really glad you enjoyed the video. I know what you mean about needing razor fast AF, when I was shooting weddings it was absolutely vital and the Nikon D3 was amazing in that respect. With the Fuji I simply haven't shot in the same circumstances so I have no comparison to draw it against, but in little bits of testing I've done for some reviews I've noticed that it struggles with fast moving objects. "Struggles" might not be a correct word, it's just that in a burst of shots it will miss focus in a couple of them, but I'm comparing a mirrorless AF with my old dSLR AF, and they work in different ways. I honestly don't know if other mirrorless systems are better.

@@AndyMumford As with many styles of photography, wedding photography is executed very differently person to person. Having shot weddings for 13yrs and having had Nikon D3, etc and currently shooting only Fuji (have for 5yrs now) ... the XT2 and up system (for me) + battery grip have matched my Nikon D3 setup in performance (exceeded it in video) with the only exception, autofocus accuracy in really dark scenes (for me that is the middle of the dance floor when it's very dark). I have found my XT4 has done much much better in that one scenario where my XT2 suffers. I have not missed my heavy full frame gear one bit while doing many weddings the past 5 years.

Nobody would care about, with which gear a good picture was being taken, literally. It's all about your creative craft & vision, your own style. Gear is just a tool, to get the job done. But the camera industry lures you into FF only, because it's only "good enough", and not the smaller APS-C Sensor, which isn't true. Especially not with X-Trans. Analog to this, you'd never say to the cook of a fine restaurant - the meal was soo delicious, because he used pots for cooking from brand x...you get the point. :)

After watching Andy’s previous videos about switching from DSLRs to Fuji X series, I sold my Nikon D850 and FF lenses and bought an XT3 and set of lenses. The D850 was an amazing camera, but I find the XT3 more intuitive to use and my kit is so much lighter. Basically everything Andy said was spot on, I’ve not looked back. Thank you for such excellent advice.

I remember watching a video of yours back in the autumn of 2017, at the time I had a full-frame Canon kit (5DSR) and it was the weight of my kit that made me rethink what kind of kit I actually needed. I got the X-T2 + 2 lenses, and the weight difference was so noticeable, I took it with me on a trip to Iceland and the images I got were wonderful including walking under a waterfall. I have back trouble so having a light kit that I can take hiking is great. What I really like about the Fuji system is that you get pro level features (weather sealing, dual UHS II card slots, 4K video) and regular firmware updates, the colour science and no anti-aliasing filter give you such rich sharp images. I love using vintage lenses on my X-T4, the whole user experience is just such a joy, every time I go for a walk with my camera I come back with a big smile on my face. On a lot of the photography channels here on KZbin Fuji is either overlooked or disparaged as not being “Professional” which is in my opinion is snobbery. APS-C cameras & sensors have come a long way in the last 10 years, and I think the whole adage that full-frame is the best and everything else is rubbish just doesn’t hold water anymore. Fuji make the best APS-C mirrorless cameras out there with many features you won’t find on any other APS-C mirrorless cameras, the reason for this I think is that they don’t make full-frame cameras, so they are not trying to push people to buy them with the better features that are missing from the APS-C line up because they have them in their APS-C cameras already (unlike Nikon & Sony - 1 card slot & no weather sealing). I think a lot of the channels on KZbin are quite irresponsible in pushing the most highly spec’d and expensive camera kit when most people who watch photography videos on KZbin don’t need the most expensive spec’d out kit. When I consider new kit, I always ask myself what I will be using it for and is there a cheaper alternative that will meet those needs. Don’t fall for all the “hype” on KZbin and buy what best meets your needs rather than what you think other people think you should buy.
@AndyMumford

Thanks for the comment, really glad you enjoyed the video. I do think that to a certain extent specs are an easy thing for reviews to latch onto as they're quantifiable and easily comparable.

I prefer a APS-C Topmodel, vs. a cheapskate entry Level FF Setup. A camera is so much more, than just Sensor size. And no offense - think about a EOS RP, which is clearly inferior. Mediocre WR, if any, no IBIS, cheap 2.36 MP EVF, one SD Card Slot, otherwise in all things the Z5 Nikon is much better, and price difference is a cheap 100 bucks new, at least in germany. Anyway, i am a control freak, and i do like as much direct access dials & buttons, i could have...instead of playing menu dive anytime, for feature xy, which eats up my nerves. If i'd being one of the Fujifilm bosses, i'd order them to produce a niche inside a niche camera - a Fujifilm X-Pro and X-E Series without LCD on the backside, and also with a monochrom Sensor only. Just like Leica with their M-D, M10-D, or M60. But APS-C, and being buyable for us, ordinary people. I prefer simplicity. For the same reasons, i would someday upgrade to the X100V, but boy...the original X100 still does render such creamy tones, and i love it. I can smile about all these more MP, faster AF, and always owning the latest & greatest GearHeads and Techfreaks..it's all about G.A.S. only - gear aquisation syndrome. If someone can't create a decent picture with say a D40, it doesn't work with any gear. Into the end of the day - better gear can enhance your image quality, but doesn't turn you into a better photographer. That comes over the years, decades and with experience...and is not correlating to any specific gear. Andy here, creates some extraordinary fine landscape pictures, i do really love to look at.

I remember being rubbished on line when I said my X-Pro1 was on par with FF DSLR’s IQ. Then the X-T1 came along and respected FF Canon shooters started ditching their 5D3’s for them. A mass exodus followed when the X-T2 was released with its superior AF performance, Fuji now need to re-ignite the faithful with their next generation cameras................

We’re surrounded by advertising exhorting us not to accept compromise, but the reality is that life is all about trade offs. Provided the camera system I can reasonably afford is capable of taking (way) better shots than I am, I’m happy with that system (but less happy with my own limitations). Loving the landscape shots, keep up the great work, a real wellbeing window on the world during the COVID restrictions 😊

Hi Andy. I think you hit the nail on the head with everything you said in this video. I came from a Canon background, specifically the 5DS-R, which was an awesome camera, especially when printing large. However, after hiking through the Mesquite Flats Dunes for about 4 hours I decided to go with the Fuji X series camera bodies, which have really been a blessing in disguise. Sure, it took me a while to learn my X-S10 and X-T3, but now I am comfortable with them both and love to go out shooting video and stills again. Out of all the You Tube photographers, I feel I respect you the most because you are a genuine individual not pushing anything on anyone. I also love your images, and feel they are outstanding when comparing them to other photographers online. Maybe one day I will join you on a guided tour! Take care, and all the best in 2024. Keep up the excellent work as well! Cheers from British Columbia, Canada.

After switching to Fuji and only 2 months using my X-T4 I'm already really glad that I did. It's an incredible camera for both photo and video for all genres. The only thing I was skeptical about before joining the Fujifilm system was people talking about the autofocus not being great. However, I've found the X-T4 to be more than good enough for my needs, including sports/action/wildlife. Thanks for your videos Andy. Excellent summation. I have both Fuji X series and Sony FF gear. A couple of years ago I did a few weeks around Hong Kong and Japan. I started using the Sony for everything and my kids were using the Fuji. After about a week I was leaving the Sony at the hotel and shooting the Fuji exclusively. The key issue was weight. Its just so much easier to travel with and when they're all stuffed into Capture One you'd be hard pressed to tell which camera was used. I still prefer FF because my brain is programmed to FF. I've been a photographer since 1979 so whenever I use the Fuji I have to do a little mental conversion of the focal lengths, but the quality isn't an issue. The truest statement is everyone makes great cameras - they're all more than capable of delivering fine work. BTW, some lovely work there, very, very nice.

Thank you so much for your photography wisdom. I bought my first camera, a 35mm Nikon FE, in 1981, with a bonus from my first job out of college. Digital cameras have never matched the joy of using that Nikon, which I also used daily while reporting for a newspaper in the early 1990s. I have longed to experience a digital camera as an "extension of my mind" ever since, but never have. And I've had Nikon, Sony and Olympus DSLR and mirrorless systems. So thanks again for your articulate insights. I am retired now and want to resume the joy of photography. You helped me make my next purchasing decision.

Andy is the main reason I finally made the decision to change from Canon FF to an X-T4, after a lot of debate. I’m no pro, and I knew if he could make these amazing images with a crop sensor system, it wouldnt be the sensor size that held me back from doing so too (it’d be my lack of skill). Couldn’t be happier. Love the ergonomics of the Fuji line. Photography feels FUN again. The image quality is great. The ONLY thing I miss is the much shallower DOF with super fast primes or the 70-200 2.8 on FF.

Your initial video made me decide on the X-T2 as my first camera. Now, three years later I shoot photos and videos for my day job and have the occasional freelance job on the side. My photos have been published in a new Wanderlust book and hang printed large on the wall of several family members and friends. I still use the X-T2 side by side with the X-H1 and I enjoy every minute of it. The Fuji X system definitely has it's quirks but overall it offers great value. So thank you for your recommendation Andy, it literally helped change my life and career.

I can relate a lot with the part on what triggered the transition, even the gear was similar as I owned an D800 at the time. The difference was that back then I was slightly shifting away from landscapes more into documentary stuff, but it was kind of similar: bought a x-e2 with the 18-55 as a smaller alternative, took it to Cuba with me, realized I only was using the D800 when the Fuji batteries ran out.

Excellent video Andy. A few years ago I got and XT2, 10-24 & 55-200, mimicking your kit. I figured that if they were good enough for you, then there was no need to look further. No regrets, I love this system and am delighted with the quality of my landscape photos. Occasionally when I get GAS, I re-watch your older XT2 videos and that cures the problem. I really enjoyed your review of Fuji cameras. I was a film photographer and had trouble switching to digital. I used to love large format cameras and film. Fuji film was terrific for more expressive work will Kodak was better for more technical work. During this transition I tried a few different cameras mostly Nikon because I had Nikon glass. My favorite Nikon camera was the F3. Back to my point it was when I purchased a FujiFilm XE2 that I felt I found a camera and manufacturer that had the image as the most important product. Yes other manufacturers made good cameras that took excellent photos but the Fuji's had the magic I was missing from film. I feel you touched upon this in your review. Thank you

This video really puts my photo gear perspective in the right direction. I have a Nikon Z system now, and love the pictures that are coming out of it. The body is as compact as a Fujifilm, but the longer lenses are much bigger and heavier. I've been searching for a video like this one for months, and I'm so glad I found yours! I'm not a full-time pro, but have been trying to decide if I should make this same jump from full-frame a X-T4/5. My Fujifilm X100V has my old Canon 6D and heavy full-frame glass gathering dust, but I still miss having the full range of lenses that come with an interchangeable system. I just don't want to lug my Canon system around anymore when I travel, especially now that I'm a parent of two young kids. I've spent the last week trying to decide between Fuji and staying full-frame, comparing weight and dimensions, resolution, lenses, image quality, etc. But I think your video has me just about convinced to follow my instinct on this switch. I'm going to test out an X-T4/5 in a couple days and then pull the trigger. Thank you so much for this thoughtful and thorough video!

As a Fuji user, I loved this video. It touched on all of the aspects of why I stick with my Fuji camera and lenses. I toyed with the idea a year or so ago of going to a FF setup. My wife asked me to take a breath and reflect. I am glad I did not switch. I even have my first gallery opening this week! Suffice it to say, 99.9% of the time, gear doesn’t matter. If it does, it is usually negative for getting in the way. Also, as a side note, you approach this subject from the best possible perspective. You define what an image should be: what we intend. I keep hearing myself and others ask “is this good or bad” or “right or wrong.” At the end of the day, the correct question I have found is “is this what I wanted, expected, or intended?” If I stay true to me, then 99% of the time, the answer is yes. And I am happy. Thank you for putting that forward in your videos. So many get wrapped up in the “correct” way of doing things from a technical perspective. Photographs are pieces of fine art - not simple formulas.

Thanks so much for the comment John, really glad you like the video. Intention is what I think all images are about, what we intend to capture, how we want it to look and how capable the camera is of producing that.

After hiking up to Bridal Veil Falls (3000ft hike) in Washington state with a Canon 5D iii and multiple heavy Zeiss lenses I realised if I was going to do more landscape I would need a lighter system and simplify. Roll on pandemic and I got separated from my USA home (long story!) and stuck in UK, so had to get a new camera and could start my decision from scratch. I started by looking at a small compact and ended up discovering the Fuji X100V. I got that for street photography and instantly fell in love with the system and the ability to generate JPEG and spend less time on the edit. I then realised that the XT-4 would suit my landscape needs much better given how light the system is. And I'm astonished at how sharp the lenses are. I'm sure they are a factor better than my Canon L glass, I can't quite put my finger on it. I've been using the 16-80mm lens and it's really great. I also have the 35mm f/2 which is great too. What I really love is the dials on top of the XT4. It's great for teaching exposure too because you can just focus on the 3 settings and the histogram. I honestly enjoy using them, and I can't explain why. Try it, you will like it :-)

REALLY enjoyed this video. Just reconfirms my choice to stick with Fuji. And I just watched your new 10-24mm video, which reconfirms that I can keep using the original, and don't need the 8-16mm. And I agree with all you shared here. As I tell friends, Fuji is really the ONLY company making high end metal bodied cameras and lenses for APSC. Canon, Nikon, and Sony have the attitude that if you are shooting professionally, you must go to full frame. For the most part, their APSC offerings are cheaper lower end plasticky bodies and lenses. And yet today's technology removes so many of the former advantages of full frame over APSC. I too went from full frame Nikon to Fuji. My only regret as I shoot portraits and weddings, was losing one stop of shallow DOF, but often with portraits, with full frame one eye would be sharp and the other soft. And Fuji's f1.4 and f1.2 lenses are perfect for weddings and portraits. And their zooms are top notch as well. Thanks again.

Thank you for sharing your invaluable opinions, tips, and experience. As an amateur photographer, I feel, at times, there is a gear cult among. At the end, it is the photographs that speak counts. Yours convey that loudly, whether at a wedding or in the field. It is your mind that composes the wonderful images, not the camera. We enjoy wonderful dishes, but never ask the chiefs the knives and pots they use. I still hold onto my Nikon D700, the old tank. It feels natural on my hand, though heavy, and is the extension of my mind. I am a small guy and love hiking. The "holy trinity" of lenses are impossible for me to carry. A 16-35mm and 28-300mm are enough. I am glad that you expressed the quality of an image does not rely on the pixels. Not everyone can be a Picasso, but we can always learn from Bob Ross... The joy of... in our case... photographing. Thank you for inspiring the viewers and followers to be better photographers.

Excellent analysis, Andy. I made the move from a Nikon D7000 to a Fuji X-T20 just over two years ago. At the time, my reasoning was based on physical size rather than weight -- there were so many places I would just go without a camera because the D7000 looked like a Big Serious Camera that would interfere with street shooting and attract thieves. I wanted something smaller for street and travel. As I bought the X-T20, the salesman said "Watch out, you just might like the Fuji better than your Nikon!" Since I got the Fuji, the Nikon has only come out once, to get some test shots for white balance fine tuning that someone else needed. Everything you said about the convenient and tactile nature of Fuji cameras is spot on. With the top dials and the Q menu, it's a rarity to have to go digging in menus. And the image quality is definitely good enough. And as I've gravitated to landscape photography, I've been perfectly happy with Fuji...planning to pick up an X-T4 body so that I have two, for the very reasons you mentioned.

I got my first Fuji (an x100 back in 2011) always loved it, still own it. I was using canons and still own one canon full frame which is now around 10 years old, have kept it and my favourite canon lens the 135F2L and only use it very occasionally for family portraits etc. But I'm now an owner of a Fuji XT3 and five Fuji lenses, have to say using the Fuji system is way more fun to use and I love the colours. I shoot a lot of different subjects and a lot of wildlife and find the Fuji XT3 and 100-400 are amazing, I get really sharp in focus images. just love it

I really like your comments on image quality! The focus on "is the image (in itself) good enough for commercial use?" puts the focus on the artistic qualities of the image rather than the technical specs of the camera/raw file. As a Fuji owner I can totally relate to what you say about both the value of having a system that is intuitive in use, and not so heavy that you may choose to leave it behind 🙂 Great video. And it should appeal also to others than Fuji users, as you demonstrate that any camera that gets you the image you want and need is more than good enough for your use.

@@AndyMumford I currently have the V1 and the AD200 Pro with X-ProF trigger. I'll likely pick up another AD200 Pro and those three lights will be my travel kit for flash photography. The cost of entry is so low and all their wireless flashes work together, so there's no penalty for investing in their system. The 200w/s light work the same as their 1200w/s light (2.4Ghz Wireless).

I have an X-T3 & a recently purchased X-E4 which many people think is too minimalistic. In some aspects , it may be, but wasn't a deal breaker for me. I noticed on a large photography website (that most of us are familiar with) that people comment/complain ,that a camera doesn't have this or this , won't do this or this, the Fuji says okay, we'll give you these things. Next observation is, wow did this good Fuji ever get heavy, too big/heavy for me to lug around.I am a relatively new Fuji user & I found the X-T3 had a steep learning curve for me, not so much for others. I figured out & set up my X-E4 & now it's my grab & go camera, no planning required. As a retired senior & a hobby photographer , this is what works for me.Great video again, sir.
