The eleventh and last song played by Opeth at Night of the Prog Festival 2013, filmed in full hd (the vision in 1080p is obviously recommended). I filmed the entire performances of Opeth, Steven Wilson, Anglagard and Devin Townsend Project, but also a lot of The Pineapple Thief, Magma, Maybeshewill, etc... so I suggest you to keep your eyes on my channel if you are interested in those videos. It will take quite a lot to upload all those hd videos on youtube but I hope it will be worth the wait.
Sorry if the video is often a little bit unstable, but I found it hard after hours and hours of filming by hand with a relativeley heavy full hd camera and without any structure to hold it for me to still filming in a stable way. I was really tired and besides that there still was some people to cover the stage with their heads. In the end I hope that the result will be appreciated, anyway.

"This song is tuned down 1 step to D, to make it sound heavier. It's a trick metal bands use when they can't come up with a good riff, because everything sounds good when you tune down." Oh, haha, Mikael

LOL the irony of Mikael saying bands tuned down the guitars when they can't come up w/ a good riff before starting to play probably the greatest riff of all times in death metal.

@@David_Downs Most death metal is pretty shit compared to Opeth IMO. I've heard a lot of messy DM. And a lot of the vocalists don't have anywhere near the range or depth that Mikael had/has.

Its true D standard or drop D is always better for metal. C tunings are good too. Any lower and it starts to get too muddy. Some bands can do it.
@trigger_me_timbers
@trigger_me_timbers 11 жыл бұрын
its called using a seven 7 or 8 string. as long as you have good string tension, it shouldnt sound muddy. But they are playing in "drop D" with this song. D standard is simply a whole step down from E standard.

well who cares about growling or not. artists are not people at our command, but theirs. i love opeth because they're unpredictable, they put their fucking soul in what they do, that's why they sound honest in the first place. the rest is pure speculation, and i don't mind about that.

He talked about it in an interview and apparently it was due to new sound equipment they had, he changed his growl subconsciously to hear himself better and it messed up his voice. Figured it out though he said, and man did he ever. He hasn't sounded this good live for a long time.

Actually, a few years ago when he was writing for Heritage, he said that AT THAT TIME he wasn't interested in doing growls or writing a death metal record. If you watch any of the interviews he's done in the last few months you'll see that he's NOW saying that the next record might be a return to the "classic" Opeth style or not. He's not sure what the future holds. So he definitely hasn't made up his mind yet.

This band's music means more to me than you think. I thought, you being an Opeth fan yourself, you would be able to take a joke, seeing as how Mikael himself could be a stand-up comic with the hilarious jokes he tells at his shows. I'm sorry I tried to make a joke there Ben. If I knew it wold hurt BENJAMIN PROD"S feelings,I'd take it back

The whole "I'm not gonna growl anymore" thing I think is just a cover up from him blowing out his growls on watershed. I think he's just trying to heal his vocal cords... as you can hear in this video his growls sound much better than lets say a couple years ago.

It was when they started playing the song, everyone is headbanging... except Mikael, swaying happily in a sweater. That's when I realized he's gone. We've really lost him to the 70s. Sure, he's still got that amazing growl, but it seems like he almost detests doing it at all now. As if it's just another "trick that metal bands use"...
