I was there, sitting around maybe the fourth row and to the right, by Frederik. I cannot describe the depth of clarity from the total effect of the mix and instrumentation. I have never heard a "smoother" sound from any band live. It was time-shattering bliss. Enrapturing sound. And of course I went to the Palladium after that and moshed to Deliverance. It's all just Opeth.

Atmosphere in music, especially in heavy music, is something sorely missing. This song is one of the most evil and melancholic sounding tunes ever because of the atmosphere akerfeldt has harnessed with it. Songwriters need to make music that has atmosphere so thick you can’t help but get swept up in it.

Deserted again. You speak to me through the shadows. Walking in closed rooms, using cold words. Captured by the night. The yearning escapes from my embrace. Strange silhouettes whisper your thoughts, scream your sadness. And they all turned away, unable to face more of this death. Credence in my word. Written in dust, tainted by memories. I confess my hope, recognize my loneliness. Your laughter weeps the truth. Push me into corners. Confirming the epitaph of my soul And displaying the once unknown karma.

Nah, it's the extreme contrast between the distorted guitars and hellish vocals and the clean (acoustic) guitars and clean vocals what makes Opeth sound like Opeth. But ofc, each to his own..

I responded before but now I understand you. Those dynamics you speak of are indeed a part of their sound, but its not infallible. Watershed wasn't very inspiring (I know I'll get shot for saying that). On the other hand, Damnation is a masterpiece because its so morose and moody, yet it lacks that particular dynamic. Heritage is more varied but devoid of death metal and guess what - its mediocre. Haxprocess and the instrumental impacted me the most but its lacking to me.
@vincentguzman73644 жыл бұрын
wow ..! amazing, hearing that song in this version leaves me speechless and many feelings ... thank you, greetings from Bolivia.
@WybjornVR11 жыл бұрын
How the hell was Watershed a joke album? Regardless of what other albums may be their "best", Watershed was a fantastic, fresh, and new album, highly inspired. I love Heritage as much as I love Ghost Reveries and MAYH, but saying "Watershed" was a joke album is ignorant. It's all Opeth and all well written. I also think Blackwater Park is fantastic but likely their most overhyped album. A bit less experimental and a bit more repetitive, but still amazing.

I'm fascinated by the maniac in the hoodie in the lower right. At 2:25 he just gets up, appears to be in pain, and hunches over for most of the song.

This is just evidence to me that what makes Opeth so great is not so much the clean/harsh dynamic, but just that morose, sad, yet melodic quality that transcends their genre clashing. I didn't really hear a whole lot of it on Heritage, which is why I think so many people are saying that they "don't sound like Opeth." There's merit to that.

Lol well I gave it my best shot. Glad there's a great band out there like them though. Sorry for the length, its exam week and I'm still stuck in writing mode hehe
