Full Homestead and Chill Tour - Spring 2020

Here is a look at our whole .19 acre urban homestead! We'll start briefly in the front yard garden, take a quick peek inside the house at all the houseplants (and kitties!), and then cruise around the back yard garden with raised beds, the pollinator island, free-ranging chickens, and chicken coop. On the side yard you'll see our chicken run, largest rainwater collection tanks, greenhouse, and compost bins. Then we head back to the front yard garden to finish with a tour of what is current "growing on" out there, including the monarch butterfly enclosure, pollinator flowers, herbs, fruit trees, veggies in the raised beds, and more. I honestly wasn't sure what to expect when I saw "homestead tour" pop up in my recommended. The last homestead video that I viewed (along with a few others) had overgrown areas with no clear pathways, or apparent plan, and really looked as if the property wasn't being cared for very well. Honestly, they looked like a hot mess that happened to have food growing on it. This was the exact opposite and I loved it!!! You have really done an astounding job with the property and your apparent love of nature really comes through. Oddly enough, I was most impressed with the chicken run and the water catchment that you have set up. I'm very new to gardening and was wondering how I could make something like that work, on a very small scale, that I could maintain and keep tidy. And you have given me more help with this than you can imagine. Thanks so much for uploading this video.

Awesome tour! What a peaceful refuge. My wife and I recently purchased our first home on the central coast. You inspired our first garden beds and worm bins this last spring. Beautiful garden - I only just found you and I love you already : ) Do you get really hot summers? South Australia can get quite brutal : ( but winter time is quite cold - no snow where I live though and not much rain either. Love your chickies (chooks in Australia : ) ). I inherited one who I instantly fell in love with her, I 'd never had any experience with chickens before and I found her so entertaining and funny. My rotten cat killed her and just about broke my heart.

Always love seeing your garden! Are you able to grow Swiss chard year round? Do you grow it in a shadier location during the summer? Also, when you first took your grass out and built your beds and pathways, how did you keep it from popping right back through? Thank you as always! PS, I’m only halfway through the tour. Landscape fabric to keep the weeds down and we can grow swiss chard most of the year although we don't typically grow it in a full sun location during the summer.

Great video! I noticed you have severa high light houseplants, do you get a ton of light during most of the day in the house? In the video it didn't look crazy bright which is what I assumed things like fiddle leaf and such need. We have a small, darker home with only place for plants being north facing windows. I am really struggling with being able to figure out what I can grow in the house.

Hey there! We do get a lot of morning sun through the bay window and then all afternoon through the south-facing glass sliding doors. Most of those plants like bright ambient but not direct light. I film videos in the evening hours because harsh midday light is not cute on film 😁

Do you space out your seeds according to their directions, or do you just scatter?

We space seeds like beans, radish, turnips, etc. but carrots are usually scattered.

The cats don't seem to be a problem, they will occasionally lay in the garden beds but that is about all they do.

Too much garden, hard to look after

It's all about time management. I have a 72x72 backyard and about 90% is gardens and then I have to side gardens on either sides of the house and it's all managed by me. I'm 38 and I've been gardening for 11 years now (and counting) and I grow just about everything. Never had a problem because of time management and if you set your garden up correctly it takes care of itself. You just simply maintain it if the plants get too expansive, etc..
