All credit due to Ernst Heinkel, who by 1939 had a fully flyable prototype two engined jet ready to go. At that time the fledgling Luftwaffe procurement office didn't want to know about jets, with Goering only putting his foot down on the things Hitler wanted done. Heinkel was told to shelve all jet related projects as his staff were to be employed building regular planes. Not until the last year or so when Albert Speer replaced Goering did the procurement office recognise the potential of the jet fighter. Much to the chagrin of Hitler. By then the German war industry was largely forced to operate piecemeal from sheds, underground facilities, hidden bunkers etc causing a logistical nightmare to manufacture any planes. Again Heinkel was by-passed (largely due to Junker's influence) and the Luftwaffe procurement office decided to mass produce the ME-262 (with Junker engines), a rather inferior plane to the HE-280 (Heinkel engines) in all areas of performance. Personally Heinkel saw little in the HE-162 as a viable weapon. Due to the scaled down configuration, in the last year the Luftwaffe procurement office did manage to build 1,600 HE-162s who were at various stages of completion by the time of capitulation, most of the ones that were received by front line units were bombed to pieces during airfield air raids.

hey, that would be interesting... if it was true. Please, everyone, just drag some text into a google search. it ain't that hard. The single engine He 178 flew a demo flight that growing did not attend and the aircraft was a pig. I didn't impress anyone because it topped out at 372mph in a prototype that was just an airfram and an engine. No guns no armor no nothing. Those that saw the flight should have been impressed because it demonstrated a new technology with potential but did not perform well in the test. Plus, Hitler preferred Messerschmit over Heinkle. the 280 didn't fly until 41 and had all kinds of problems, mostly related to the engine. just to the the wiki pages.

The entire external front cockpit area of the HE-162 reminds me so much of the A-10 Thunderbolt. Such a modern looking design to me. Makes me wonder what the Germans could have really put on the front if they had focused on jet fighters with the resources they had in the beginning of the war.

These fly much better than the real ones did. Made of whatever the Germans had on hand by the late stages of the war, and piloted by teenagers, most of them fell apart or caught fire long before they could engage Allied aircraft
@momotheelder71245 жыл бұрын
Not entirely true, it had good performance. Yes, some experienced construction defects, but it was the rush to get it operational which meant all the kinks were not ironed out. Eric Brown probably the most prolific test pilot of all time rated it-with the caveat that you had to know how to handle it properly.
@jeova0sanctus0unus5 жыл бұрын
It wasnt a bad design, but had flaws. jet engines being what they where at the time, they had problems with Flameouts, then there was the problem of rushed production(but you should see what bf109 production looked like at the time Frankenstein aint got shit on that patchwork.), the general issues of operating a newly introduced Aircrafttype from makeshift runways,together with the Allies having complete Air Superiority, frankly, im not sure anything would have performed well there.

It's great fun to take down enemy fighter aircraft, but how about taking down airfield/factory/city/destroying BOMBERS? Single seat fighters can be more easily replaced than bomber crews. Oh well, fighter-vs.-fighter combat is always more interesting than the tedious-climb-to-20,000 feet+ bomber interception missions. Or is that task handled by Me-262s, instead?

Everyone always wonders 'what if' with the 262 - imagine if this was operational mid-1943 with proper glue and trained pilots. Even more - why not just bolt one of the V1 engines on instead? Almost as much thrust and a service life 1000x longer than the jet engines they had. Eric 'Winkle' Brown reckoned if the pilot was experienced the 162 was better than any allied fighter at the end of the war and a very stable gun platform. And it was designed and flying in less than 100 days ffs.

Since this plane was never operational, how can its game performance have any basis in reality?
@MrArgus111115 жыл бұрын
It was, in fact, flown operationally, but only a few times. They performed very poorly and most were lost to accidents, poor construction, and poor piloting by kids that had no idea how to fly an aircraft. If you search youtube you can even find an interview with a 162 pilot who survived the war. He didn't have much good to say about the thing.
@thomaszhang31015 жыл бұрын
MrArgus11111 they were not flown by kids, but by highly trained FW-190 pilots from JG1. They were meant to be flown by Hitler Youth, but (surprisingly...) it turns out that it makes more sense to let professional pilots handle high performance fighters.
@andersforsgren38064 жыл бұрын
They were operational, but only for a very brief period of time, active missions only for the last month of the war. If you look at the video the airbase they fly from get bombed after take off - and craters can be seen when the Volksjäger do a flyby. And this reflect reality, they had to relocate several times. Some had been put together in quite less than optimal condition, these tended to loose part in the air and crash. Germany have had the glue factory bombed, and used some other glue that was not good together with wood. Young and inexperienced pilots could have ended up flying these, if it ever had been mass produced. Thomas Zhang is however correct. A group of ME262 pilots who had lost their aircraft were moved over to Volksjägers and reported it was a very good aircraft. But it did actually had a set of flaws that were solved with compromise solutions - as it was rushed into service so fast they did not have time to fix the problems properly.
