correct, its only above around 8500m (I forget exactly what altitude exactly, its just before switching over to GM1) where its faster than literally everything else. Its performance at those very high altitudes comes at the cost of on par performance in the middle and mid-high range, and sub par at low altitude (when compared to P51D, P47D at 70in, Spit 14, 109G14, 190D9, etc)

learn basics of flying and the physics. Most people jump into flying sims without even know how a plane works. In order to be a good pilot (real life and virtually) you have to understand basics stuff like lift, energy, air density, wind, weight, types of planes, trimming, engine mangment ect ect. Once you understand these then flying gets easier and you understand how to react and how a plane takes off, flys steady and lands. But if you know most of this stuff and just dont understand the game then its pretty easy. Just make sure you have a decent HOTAS set up and IR tracker or VR...its really annoying to fly without them its all muscle memory.

The best advice I can give you, for any of the IL-2 series games, is to invest in a good quality for the buck joystick. Don’t go too wild, but get something you can afford that’ll suit you well. Once you have that, make sure you take your time setting up the various controls. Set it up so it’s intuitive for you, and comfortable. Next and finally, is to learn basic to intermediate flying and aircraft technical concepts. Eventually you’ll learn how to employ your machines in combat, but first learn how those machines work, in and out. It doesn’t take long. Eat the elephant one bite at a time, welcome to the flying club!

Fishyyy, what armament did you choose for the 152s, also what weapons could you select from? Ammo, any choice in load out? I've never read much on the 152, do you have any pilot commentary on the flight characteristics of the152? The appearance of the TA-152 lends itself to be an elegant airframe requiring a particular way of handling the controls.

I've been watching some real gun camera footage and it seems most of the attacks were from the rear . Do you guys not do rear attacks because it avoids the gunners ?

The real footage is usually recorded by dedicated bomber destroyer aircraft(usually Fw190As and Bf109s with wing gun pods) that have heavy guns and extra armour also some footage is from twin engine heavy fighters(Bf110Gs and Me410s). That's why the footage shows rear attacks because they have already taken out the rear gunners with longer range cannon fire. Both of these types and units were escorted by dedicated fighter escorts (usually Bf109s) to tie up the Allied fighters. In game its harder because the AI gunners are extremely accurate and sometimes somewhat invincible even when you completely destroy a turret, they will still return fire. All of this can be fixed with mods.

@@rodneypayne4827 Yes, I've noticed , in the real footage , the 100s can use their 20mm from a stand off position , at greater range than those armed with the 30mms who have to get almost alarmingly close , but the damage they inflict is impressive . I've watched a lot of real footage , it is fascinating . I thought this clip oozed quality though, very cleverly done .

Casper. the. Gr8. Some D9s and Ta152s had the underside painted orange so that that German flak gunners wouldn't shoot down their own aircraft, by this stage of the war most aircraft they saw were allied so the flak gunners were becoming trigger happy. Several jadgflieger were killed in this way.

IL2 1946 is STILL a better combat flight sim than DCS.

It's certainly better in terms of variety and coherent missions to play as well as a dynamic campaign, but it's not like DCS doesn't simulate flight more accurately because il2 1946 is one of the least accurate flight models around.
