...when I moved from the Midwest/Missouri in my early 20's to SoCal, people would inquire as to where I was from and when I said the Midwest, they'd say 'no, that's not it' and they would be somewhat stupefied...so apparently I possess a possibly 'unique' speech pattern, probably thanks to my 7th grade teacher...now, if you were to hear my older brother, he sounds like some backwoods character, he proudly proclaims himself as a 'Missouri heathen'...I have an 'ear' for languages, it's fascinating to have a dialogue with people from all over...ty SoCal and it's diversity... 😎🤙

I lived in Western Wisconsin for 20 years and didn’t pick up the accent but I’ve always gotten a kick out of it. In fact I watched Fargo the movie with my Seattle born and raised girlfriend just so she could hear it. She did not believe it wasn’t just actors way overdoing it. So I took her to the Twin Cities and we just hung out downtown and she was laughing so hard. She thought they were sooo funny! She’s a Swede herself so she blended right in with the looks. My friends told me bringing a Swede to St Paul was like taking burritos to Mexico!

Laughing at other people's accents is rude and crude. Grow up.

This is delightful! Thanks for the segment. I remember going to summer camp and the out of state kids teasing us about "flag".

There's an ad on the radio for a flag store, he says "flegg" like 20 times. It drives me crazy.

Some people say the Minnesota accent is weird or funny. I'm learning English and I want to visit Minneapolis, Faribault, etc. Will I understand what they say?

I have been giving my friends SO MUCH CRAP about saying "Wiss-con-sin" claiming that they're secretly from there because where I grew up (Willmar/Fergus) it was always "Wə-scon-sin". Since two of them are from Wisconsin and one is from Stillwater area, I think the accent has bled through to the cities metro a bit. Traitors.

I have lived in WI all my life. Now that I hear them using our accent, we sound ridiculous 😂 I can't believe we really talk like that!

You do not sound ridiculous. You only believe that because other people are making fun of your accent. Ignore them.

Funny and informative. And what of the similarity with the infamous Canadian pronunciation of "about?"

I thought the Fargo accent was awful. I’ve lived here most of my life and neither I nor my parents heard people talk like that. I think it more a country hillbilly way of speaking than a Midwest way of speaking - just like one may hear that background distinction in states in the south. I lived in England for many years and the most notable thing they noticed was the nasality.

I'm from the Minneapolis area, and have heard plenty of people with a more subtle version of this accent. I've been to a few bars in Duluth, and there were some women there that came pretty close to the exaggerated version heard in Fargo lol.

Maybe it's an accent more predominant in Minnesota? Despite it's name, the film takes place mostly in Minnesota.

@@katstorm13 Right, I travel a lot for my job and hear the accent but it’s very sporadic around the state but definitely more notable in smaller towns, it’s more subtle in larger cities.
